I have the same problem!!! I think also that the numbers on the anti-skating knob has no meaning because the anti-skating is not working on this turntable according to the numbers.

Hello,
I just purchased a PLX-500 with stock cartridge.
I'm able to adjust the tonearm height, and the manual indicates that the tonearm should be parallel to the record with the needle down. However even at the lowest tonearm height the arm is not parallel; it is tapering downwards from the base towards the needle. How can I adjust it properly?
Kindly advise...

Surely you have a fix by now? Headstock shims? Better fitting slipmat? Both?
