Music source from same PC - Which controller should I buy?

Hi Gurus...

I'm just about to choose a controller to use along with rekordbox. There are two things I definitely need: I want to quickly browse through my music collection and use the preview feature (I don't mind touching my computer for doing this) - But I want to use the headphones that are connected to the controller. Do I need a 4-channel controller and use the line out/in connection between the computer and the controller for doing this? Or is there a simple workflow for 2-channel controllers as well?

Issue #2 is related to that. For most of the time I want to use my setup as it should be -ie. with a local music collection. But sometimes people do have odd requests and I need to switch to a streaming service. Is a 4-channel controller the solution here as well? With the streaming service on the same PC and a Line out/in connection to the controller?

Regards, Gregor

rekordbox does not support any streaming services, so you may want to take a look at using Virtual DJ, which has a couple to choose from.

All of our DDJ controllers can work with VDJ as they are MIDI devices. Find which one suits your need for features like number of channels, number of mic inputs, etc.

I know that rb doesn't support streaming directly. And I'm not interested in the specialized Services VDJ offers. 95% of the songs I play will still be local on my notebook. In some rare cases I like to have the opportunity to fade in a song that plays in a seperate application or even just a browser window. I don't mind waveforms or beatmatching for those really rare cases. But I care about a proper workflow.

How about my first question? Pre-Listening within the library (without loading on a deck) through the headphones?

If you care about a proper workflow, you wouldn't be playing audio from a web browser. lol

You can preview the audio to the headphones with most hardware (DDJ or DJM), it sends it direct from the software to the headphone output.

Honestly... if someone wants to hear „the purple people eater“ at 5 in the morning i don‘t mind the quality 😏

Seriously... 2 or 4 channel to make that easier?

lol - you mean you don't have that in your collection already?!

I'd go with a 4ch offering, that way you can still have two channels dedicated to the DJ software / mic.

Actually i do have it in my collection now...

Do i need a line cable or is there some software trick to send the stream to a specific channel?

I bought a ddj-rx meanwhile!

Great hardware, but what about my last question? How do I assign the streaming application to a specific channel? Btw... I have a 'can't load asio driver' problem. What can I do?

And one last thing: how do I access the tag list from the controller?

Thx, Gregor
