OK can't find any info from Pioneer & the manual is basically a quick start guide. (sort it out Pioneer!)
So after a bit of playing around and analysing files in audacity it seems that if you aim for 0db on the mixer you will end up with a really quiet mix.
If you go so the volume meter very occasionally touches 9db it will give you the optimum level with a loud recording that doesn't clip.
I'm assuming there are no distortion issues with this internally on the unit?
Anyone else want to chip in?

The XDJ-RX record-to-USB function is designed so as to protect against clipping when DJs are pushing high channel levels during recording. It's better to have a quiet recording you are able to boost later than to have one which has turned into a brick and sounds awful.

This seems to be how it works. People think its not loud enough unless the meter is in the red so Pionerr let you do it without distorting. DJs aren't rocket scientists.
Yeah I figured that - coming from a studio background though keeping it under zero seems natural - but yes it's true DJ's want to push the levels ever higher....
For the longest time i ran my primary at +3DB. Channels 1 and 2 at +9DB. Now, i've never encountered any clipping or distortion at those levels and they produce perfect loudness. What i do encounter is a built in compression tool manipulating my mix. Turning up low areas and turning down high areas. Most listeners don't even notice. But, today, i am mixing for composers and other dj's who do notice this.
Soooooo... Until someone teams up with pioneer to address these issues. Nothing will be done and we will have to continue to use third party apps and plugins to find our own solutions.

Giving credit to Pioneer here, however. They do make great hardware. And, they have taken my advice in the past on system updates. I do praise them on their dedication to some musical needs we have and i understand the development involved costs a lot.
I specifically bought this unit at full mark up for the fact they made it for me. ;)
