XDJ-R1 Freeze, crash and high pitch horn sound

Hi there,

I've had this unit for a year now and experienced the dreaded freeze-horn-tone crash a few times but never live - and now have. Man, this sucks. This has been posted about so many times but no resolve. The last firmware update was a year ago. Are you no longer supporting the XDJ-R1 and will you be trying to resolve this ongoing issue.

This is meant to be a professional piece of kit - please, please try and sort this out.

Hello all who have crash, freeze or high-pitched noise issue on XDJ-R1,

Sorry for the inconvenience you have experienced.

XDJ-R1 engineers tried hard to replicate the issues you kindly reported, but they failed so far. In order to fix any issues, the first thing they should do is replicating them.

They desperately need more detailed procedures you took before or when the issues occurred. Did you press any buttons, turn the jog wheel or scroll the track information? Any kind of things you did before the issue occurred is very important.

Also, we would like to ask you to provide track files and database you used when the issues occurred. Even though you said the tracks I played could not be related with the issues, all the track files you have might be a culprit because the engineers were not able to replicate the issues when using the tracks which were precisely verified.

Please provide us with some tracks you played when the issue occurred and the database.

Also, the video taking before and while the issue occurred would be a great help.

Deeply apologize for all the inconvenience and thank you for your kind cooperation.

Best regards,

CRM, Pioneer DJ

So - update. I've spoken to my local Pioneer service centre. They tell me they've never come across this issue before & there's nothing on Pioneer updates.

They don't believe the fix from @Nico would make any difference & aren't prepared to carry out the work without diagnosing it first. They want the unit or.... a video!

Can we get anything official from Pioneer yet or at least the Madrid Service Centre publishing the fault along with changes.

Another Gig looming on Saturday which I'm dreading. Long gone are the days looking forward to a gig with the XDJ-R1

@Nick > Sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, most of the time users come and report such issues, they don't or are unable to provide specifics as to what was happening at the time the error occurred. If you are able to replicate it, or to outline with detail the steps you took before the error occurred, I'd be happy to pass it along to our engineers for their review.

Hi,

Welcome on XDJR1 problem.

I have same problem than you :(

Mine stop to work when i'm mixing after 1h30 2h with USB Key o CD.

It stop and it seems to come from Deck 2.

Last time it happened during a set with children party :-(

I bring mine to Pioneer TK Center in Paris (France ^^)

But after 8 days, they didn't found what's wrong.

I have the last firmware that should correct freeze problem...

As i don't think that they find within a reasonnable time with a adfordable cost, i decided to buy a XDJ-RX2.

If it'll cost not more will see to repair it, and will give to a good friend.

Please Pioneer, help all guys who have Freeze problem.

Sure we're a lot of to have problem...

Thanks,

Have a good evening too ^^

Gerald.

Hi,

Well i wrote the last firmware, i forgot to write 1.13 :-(

I carefully flash it without problem.

No news from Pioneer Tk Centre in Paris.

I know that Firmware 1.13 should correct all kind of freeze, but it seem it doesn't correct all.

As XDJR1 is an old stand alone, will us stay with a not full working machine?

What kind of track were you playing at the time? From USB (MP3, WAV) or from CD?

Well,

On Usb Key it's with MP3 the highest quality.

On CD original CD.

First i thinking that my Usb key have corrupted memory part.

But no, cause problem happened also with song installed since a long time (02/2017)

Last songs was on the key on 11/12/2017 so not on the same memory part....

I have a similar key(same brand and capacity) with same songs for my new XDJ-RX2 i played till 2h without problem.

Sorry if my English is not understandable too ^^

Gerald.

Hi Gerald and Pioneer,

@Pioneer, I think Gerald may be onto something with the 2nd deck. I have noticed that it's always the second deck for me as well.

Please, can you guys try and sort? I had a gig before Christmas and had to run my decks through a 2nd mixer with a track lined up on another set of decks in case it crashed.... and it crashed. Same thing - high pitch horn noise. Luckily I could slam down the horn noise on the 2nd mixer and let the other tune run whilst I restarted my XDJ-R1.

I'm gutted - I want to sell this now and get an XDJ-RX2 like Gerald. But it's not fair selling the faulty kit to somebody. Pioneer - you should have recalled this. Terrible customer service.

Hi,

Well for me 2 problems are:

Where's on holidays and all brand and TK service are working with small team.

For mine i put on Paris Tk Pioneer Centre on 21 December and at this day they couldn't reproduce the bug.

So for them impossible to get a quote to repair it...

Usb key problem? Deck 2 problem, cd problem on Deck 2 or other thing (over heat) i don't know.

As i mentioned on my previous message, i tried a similar key on my new XDJ-RX2 and no problem after 2h.

Ok it's not the same unit, but it's same usb key with same songs on it.

Even it bug around of 2h it's not good.

Wanted to sell to a little price to a frien or give it, but can't really do this with a such bug.

Still awaiting news from Paris Pioneer Tk Centre...

Please Tk Pioneer do your best, sure we're not 2 having so such bug problem.

Help us :-)

Thanks,

Have a good day too ^^

Hi all,

Experiencing the same issues.

Set up: MacBook Pro with Rekordbox.

Did the firmware update a while back (v1.13) but that clearly didn't help.

It happened again this weekend. Freezing mainly starts after 2 hours of fun.

Unplugged the USB-connection, replugged and it worked again. Untill 10 minutes later. And then it went on like this several times - maybe 3 to 4 times during the 2 hours after first freeze.

Looks like it also happened while using the second deck - while looping, looping and roll effect, afterwards while doing anything...

I have some parties planned in the near future, so would really appreciate a solution :-)

Thanks!

Regards,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

I noticed it happens more when I'm searching within a track or if I've set up a loop. The second deck looks to be a thing here.

A note for @Pioneer - I use a USB key and link to Remotebox on the iPad but a freeze has also occurred when not connected to Remotebox. Files are all clean and the files it crashes on are always different. I don't think this is related to the file. It must be processing.

It's so embarrassing when this happens!

Thanks,

NIck

Sorry for the delay guys, we have escalated this to the product team, but as everyone is on holidays, it will take some time to get a response.

Hi,

Thanks for your message Pulse.

Don't know if it's possible, but if a solution is found it should be good to launch a new to every Tnk pioneer repair centre.

As mine is on a centre since 21/12/207 but if they didn't found how the bug is coming???

After a long time if they found the problem very boring, they can say to me                 " We didn't found, there's no problem" .

So pay something (high price :( ) and bring back your R1.

Don't want this...

Want to have a quote to see if it's affordable for me to repair it.

That's all, i'im waiting this like all customer who have this bug.

Gerald.

@Gerald > I understand the frustration, and I also recognize that a service shop may not be able to replicate the issue because you too could go several gigs without having this problem happen, which is exactly why it's so hard for our engineering team to pinpoint. They issued the 1.13 firmware to address what they thought was the problem, but as users still experience problems, they are working to narrow it further.

Well,

I checked all my mp3 with MP3val no pb.

What i think is that Tk centre have special way to find problem, but if they didn't found is not saying that there's no pb.

That's why my centre ask me to let my usb key to check with my R1.

But what is show here's that problem happen after a similar time for all user.

I mean around of 2h, visibly never under 1h30?

And also bug happened for most on deck 2?

So what can we say more?

No pb to wait, but as the last firmware was released on September 2016 how can we imagine that i can be solved?

I hope something will be found, as XDJ-R1 is still a current model but how long will it be?

Also is Pioneer i mean the team boss will allow the R1 engineering spend time and money to solve this?

I never work over 2h on my R1.

But each time that i played and reach 2h R1 bug, each time...

Now i'm working on a new XDJ-RX2, so won't forget my XDJ-R1...

@Gerald - I really hope the guys at Pioneer take a look at this now. As you say, the last firmware release was September 2016 and I have tracked all the many issues online since then. There are so many people with the same problem and it remains unresolved. Surely this must be resulting in bad press for Pioneer.

What is a shame, is that there are still many people investing in the R1 unaware that they may encounter this bug. It's a big investment for a lot of people and people's livelihood and reputations depend on a smooth running set. As a DJ you are paid to provide a service and interrupted play because of glitches and bugs on pro kit is not acceptable.

@Pulse - thanks for escalating but please do keep us up to date on your progress.

Hi,

Well hope they'll find what's wrong for user who have a faulty unit and it can be repaired to a small price to by Official Pioneer repair centre.

Other problem is as this unit is still sold by official seller, with firmware 1.13 what can we think that those unit should have the same bug?

Hope that mine which is on repair Centre since 21/12/2017 will be repaired soon to a affordable price too.

That's what i'm afraid to pay a lot for a problem which is not due to a user fault too.

So the question is, we'll must pay as for most user our unit have is warranty out?

Hi,

I've now reached out to my local Pioneer service centre to see if they have ever heard of the issue before or if Pioneer has been in touch with them to advise of these problems.

We should not have to pay, Gerald, it's a pre-existing fault and Pioneer should pick up the bill.

Well,

Maybe in other Country in Europe Pioneer by Official Repair Centre won't let pay customer.

But in France maybe it's not the same thing really.

So will have to contact Pioneer Dj customer service?

The most important think is that they must find what's wrong and get a quote.

After maybe we must fight to avoid pay something too :)

I come from another similar thread. Moved over here as I obviously keep having the same random failure problem. I also thought of selling the machine to someone with the explicit warning of not aiming it to serious dj use as it's just not capable of doing a clean job. You just can't trust it. But what an expensive toy to enjoy at home only, isn't it. Engineers can replicate the problem easily. Put someone to deejay with the machine like anybody would do, mixing cds with mp3, aac, wav or aiff files through USB, randomly, normal standalone use you could forget about linking a computer, phone or pad and at some point you'll get the freeze. Not in a 4 hour session? Try again, it will fail sooner or later. I managed to make it fail in 4 minutes by loading the same aac file from usb stick on the two decks, mixing them, playing back and forth... it crashed in a matter of seconds.

Well,

The problem for me is:

If Tk Engineers can't make the bug come, how can all Official Repair Centre in all country can repair all R1 which have the problem?

If they found what's wrong, will they communicate to all Pioneer division in all country which send the information on " how to do " to each Official Repair Centre???

Surely not a hardware problem? but if it come from the firmware, will they correct the problem really on day???

R1 still in Official Repair Centre since 21 December 2017...

Now, i'm playing with a brand new XDJ-RX2 but don't forget my R1.

Want back a full working order R1, but when and will we pay something???

That what all R1 user are waiting for...

Hi :-)

Nick did you heard something interesting about the good ending of this problem?

Hope really that it'll be solved soon, without pay a lot or without pay anything if the problem was due to a bad firmware from Pioneer.

Wait and see.

I want back soon my R1 like every one.

Gerald.

They're still looking into it, but aren't able to replicate it here. I've had an R1 since its release and in all of my testing I've never been able to force this to occur either. Maybe I'm just lucky?

Hi,

Well if this bug only happened one time each 3months after more thant 2h of playing maybe we think that's not very bad.

But, for me and maybe of all user, problem happen always around of 2h of set wit Usb Key or Cd and also bug on deck B.

If there an appropriate mix of planned action to replicate the bug sure that's difficult for Tk pioneer to do the same...

Still no news from my Tk Pioneer Centre in Paris.

So no news is good or bad news?

@Pulse - how's the best way to action this? Post a video on YouTube and link to or shall we actually orchestrate a deck swap?
