You only need one but there are some touring DJs who use one on each deck for layering FX. Pages 6 and 7 of the RMX-1000 user manual explain the two methods for connecting it to your mixer.

Rmx1000 and xdj1000
do I need 2 units of rmx1000 , 1 for each xdj1000 or can I just have 1 unit to link both, if so how is it connected.
