Using DJM-900 Quantize

I have a DJM-900 and 2 CDJ-2000's.  I was watching this video  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lThb-k8O2os at 7:45 he starts to scratch but then gets it to sink perfectly with the other song how do you do that?  I don't care about the scratching I just want to know how to record a part and have it re play in sink with the other deck.

My second question is how do you record a small sample on the mixer and transfer it from lets say ch 1 to keep repeating on channel 3?

@Brady > First, there is no "sync" between players.  He's got the 900nexus connected to the network and the mixer is reading the beat-grid information from the player with the loop.  The roll effect is thus snapped (quantized) to the beat grid of the looping music.

To get a loop (sample) recorded and moved to another channel, simply engage the roll effect on one of the channels to sample it, then change the channel assignment of the effect to another channel (say you record from CH1 then change the effect channel selector to CH2), it will then playback on CH2.

How do you do what he does? For the second part does it only work on the roll effect? When I switch the channel do I keep the effect engaged? Thanks for the help

1) Create the roll

2) Move it to another channel, keeping the effect engaged.

Moving the effect to another channel doesn't work with all effects.

Can anyone give me a detailed explanation? Also what does the quantize button do on the mixer

@Brady > Detailed explanation was in my first reply -- let me know if you need more detailed than that.

The quantize button engages or disengages the mixer beat-grid quantization for the effects as described in my first reply.

anyone work out how the scratch effect /sync works yet.

i have mine set up exactly as in the video, but i cant work out how to asign the 'transform effect 'timing to the other channel. he says he has the effect sycned to the channel with the music playing, ie channel 1, but the effect is playing on channel 3. when increasing the BPM on channel 1 it only increases the tempo of the tune playing not the scratch effect, which is what i expect. when increasing the BPM on the scratch effect it changes the timing of the effect yes, but this means that they are not synced up.

any ideas?

Hopefully this helps but let me know if it doesn't...

  1. Ensure everything is connected properly, using Rekordbox analyzed tracks, and connected via LAN
  2. Assign players to correct channels and connections
    3. Press and hold "Menu" and enter "Utility" mode on your right CDJ, and turn off "Quantize"
  3. Get a loop going on your left CDJ with maybe 8 or 16 bars.
  4. Get a loop going on the right CDJ that will be your scratch sound (should be a constant sound)
  5. Enable the "Quantize" button, turn "Level/Depth" to "max" position
  6. Set effect to "Trans", and effect channel to the channel you have your scratch sound loop playing
  7. Play both CDJ's, both faders up
  8. Turn on "Trans" effect on the scratch sound
  9. Change Pitch on left CDJ and effect should stay quantized to that beat
  10. Begin scratching.... (which is your own ability to stay in sync)

Overall, the big part is to un-"Quantize" the scratch sound CDJ which will make everything be Quantized with the other CDJ and change the tempo of the effect.

Hope this helps, let me know how it goes when someone gets the chance since I'm away from my gear.

the bit thats not clear is how to un-quantize the scratch effect. didnt think that was possible.

not that i think anyone will ever use this feature, am just curious as to how to get the quantize feature to match the deck with the loop playing when the actual effect is on the deck with the scratch sound.

@tim waller > On the CDJ that will have the scratch sound, you press and hold the "MENU" button until the Utility settings appear. Then you scroll through the settings and go to the "Quantize" setting, and turn it "OFF". That will un-Quantize the scratch sound deck, but doesn't matter because it's a constant sound. Then the DJM-900 will only be Quantized to the CDJ that is playing the 8 or 16 bar loop and your effect will stay in time with that deck.

i tried all that, but the djm 900 just stays at the same bpm it doesnt quantize to anything cause the channel selected is the scratch sound not the deck with the loop on it.

i have been using pionner gear for years and read the manuals for both the cdj and djm 900 back to front, from what i can see the effect will only quantize to the channel that is selected. there is no way of telling it, quantize to another channel.

Just been trying it all again. The only thing i can't figure out is how to get the scratch sample on channel 2 quantised with the beat grid from channel 3. I know i more thank likely sound stupid but how do i get channel two to follow channel 3s beat grid info and move in time with it as i move the pitch up and down like the vid.

Cheers,

Is there still no solution to fix the problem of quantize to another channel?

I'm using the DJM 2000 and was very happy about this function, but it doesn't work in the way I thought. It would be cool to chose (i.e. by pressing the quantize button and the effect channel button at one time) the channel the mixer takes the beatgrit from.

I had also problems recreating what James does in the video (quantized scratch sound), this was some months ago. I will try to do it again today.

Just been playing around with this.. and cannot get it working.

I realized that you MUST have the CDJ PLAYER Number selected correctly to the fader channel its plugged in to.

I had my left cdj set as "player 1" and pluged into fader 2 on my djm900nexus.It would not gathering hte correct info until i specified the left cdj as "player 2"

This doesnt fix the issue where the BPM is not quantized in to the right deck.(like james' setup at 4:54 on this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lThb-k8O2os)
