File management with Rekordbox and iTunes

I am hoping someone can give me any tips on managing my library, i know what one does might not work for the other but i want to make sure I'm not missing anything.

I am currently using Rekordbox and iTunes.

This is how i run use it,

I put all of my music in iTunes and have a few playlists and smart playlists, I then feed this to Rekordbox.

My idea behind using iTunes is that i want to keep out of Rekordbox so of my music that is out of favour but i still want to keep, that way i can keep Rekordbox pretty clean.

I am a little unsure of some settings i.e. iTunes bridge and Convert iTunes grouping to Rekordbox label so I'm not sure if i should be using these.

I am also in the process of tagging my music in Rekordbox and wanted to know of it possible to save this information to the metadata or back it up somehow. I had to remove my music and re install and had to start from scratch, luckily i had not done that many.

Thanks in advance M

My suggestion is to make your playlists within iTunes, then use the iTunes sync manager or import those specific playlists into rekordbox rather than importing your entire iTunes library. That allows you to keep things clean and maintain a smaller rekordbox collection.

As for the tagging, the majority of the tags are stored on the file itself, so changed tags can be read by any application.

The iTunes Grouping conversion is because the Grouping tag is not used by rekordbox, so it allows you to convert it to the Label tag within rekordbox.

Hi Pulse, thanks for getting back to me.

Ok, I have created a playlist in Rekordbox and imported my chosen iTunes playlist into it.  Should the Rekordbox playlist auto update when i add to the iTunes playlist, this is not happening at the moment.

Also when you mention the Rekordbox tags, where is this information stored, is it in the meta data?  Once i delete a track from my collection this info seems to be lost, am i missing something?

No - it does not auto-update when you manually import. If you have selected the iTunes playlist within the sync manager, it will appear under the iTunes item on the left side of rekordbox. Any changes made there or within iTunes are updated when the application is reloaded (or you force a refresh of the iTunes listing). If you have both applications open at the same time you need to manually refresh with the little button to the right of the iTunes list.

The reason you want to import a playlist from the iTunes section would be for having those tracks available to a CDJ over LINK.

Some of the metadata is written to the file, but not all of the fields as some are rekordbox-only. Which fields are you having troubles with? And what kind of file are you using?

Ok, I might have missed something here.

The sync part just doesn't seem to be working correct.  If i add a track to my iTunes playlist (in iTunes) it will populate the iTunes to the left in Rekordbox but will not sync or add to my collection playlist, hope that makes sense.

With the metadata I have created a tag (in my tags) under components heading but this does not write to the metadata, I am a little concerned that if i needed to re import or re install for some reason I might loose all of the information I have input.

1) Close rekordbox.

2) In iTunes, add a track to a playlist.

3) Open rekordbox, find that iTunes playlist on the left, it should now show the track you just added.

Regarding the metadata, did you mean "Comments" or "Composer" ? Again, what is the filetype you're using? MP3, AAC, AIFF, WAV?

Ok, it does appear in the iTunes playlist in Rekordbox, it does analyse it but does not show in my collection at the top, the files i am using are AIFF.

That's correct - it will NOT update the imported list, only the one shown beneath "iTunes." If you want to update that list, you would just re-import the iTunes playlist.

I don't recall if AIFF files are updated, I know MP3s are (again, only for certain tags).

Would you be able to check for me?  I know AIFF files store metadata but if its only selected fields then i can try to just populate these. Thanks

Ok thats great, If this is the case can I ask where the key tag cue point info is stored.  I would like to know just in case i have any problems with Rekordbox or my Mac and need to re install, I don't want to have to re do all the cue points/loops etc.  Also if i copy the file where it is stored how would I add it back to Rekordbox?

Thanks

If you go to File > Library > Backup Library, that will allow you to create a zip file of the data or data AND audio files (choice is given).

Should you prefer to manually grab the files, you'll find those in the rekordbox folder:

Win 7/8: C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\Pioneer\rekordbox

OSX: /Users/yourusername/Library/Pioneer/rekordbox
