[CLOSED] Problem: No Audio Output on DDJ-SX with Dell Laptop

I have a new Pioneer DDJ-SX, which worked fine out of the box with my Dell Latitude E6420 laptop (core i7 processor with 8GB RAM) running Windows 7 x64 Enterprise and the Serato DJ software (v 1.1.1). DDJ-SX firmware version is 1.02, and Windows driver version is 1.00.

PROBLEM: Now the unit does not output any PC audio through the main outputs, nor can I listen to any of the PC channels using the CUE feature.

Also, the LEDs indicating the master output level do not illuminate for any of the PC channels, despite the channel LEDs correctly illuminating to the beats. All hot cue buttons illuminate with my defined cue points and seem to function correctly when observing the track position indicator in the Serato software. If I disconnect the DDJ-SX while a track is playing, Windows realizes that the unit was disconnected and plays audio through the built-in laptop speakers. Basically, the Serato software functions just like it’s working correctly with the DDJ-SX (even the virtual “master output” level in the software shows a change in levels when I manipulate the controller) yet no audio is heard through headphones using CUE nor through the main audio outs.

All “CD” channels work well with external RCA inputs (they output sound through to the Master, and CUE functions work with my headphones) regardless if I have the unit plugged into my laptop or standalone.

WHAT COULD HAVE CHANGED: About a week ago I didn’t realize I was logged into a different account on my laptop (my work account) with which I had never used the DDJ-SX. It’s worth noting that both accounts have Administrator privileges. Immediately after connecting the DDJ-SX, Windows started searching for a driver. I selected “cancel” and logged out of my work account and into my preferred Windows user account. This is when I first observed that there was no audio output through the DDJ-SX using my Dell laptop.

TROUBLESHOOTING ATTEMPTED: aside from checking the obvious physical settings (cross fader position/state, trim level for a given PC channel, master volume level, position of all other channel knobs and faders) I suspected that the Windows PC could be the culprit. So I pulled out my handy old MacBook from 2006 and installed Serato. My DDJ-SX works correctly (PC channels output sound through mains and all CUE functions work correctly) when connected to the MacBook, with no change in knobs/faders/settings. Back to my Dell laptop, I scrutinized all Windows “sound” parameters and settings. I even tried deleting all Pioneer and Serato software, including manually wiping registry keys to remove traces of the software, then reinstalling in correct order (Serato SW, Pioneer HW driver, connect HW after restart) with the issue persisting. I also tried using the Windows System Restore function, but all restore points are too recent to revert back to a state before I started troubleshooting and uninstalling/reinstalling the Pioneer/Serato software. As a final sanity check I reinstalled the firmware on the DDJ-SX yet the issue continues to persist.

I’m beginning to think that the DDJ-SX is not compatible with my Dell laptop, since I grabbed a spare HDD and installed a fresh copy of Windows 8 x64 and the same audio output issue exists with the same symptoms (also cannot listen to PC channels using headphones in CUE mode).

HERE’S WHERE I NEED YOUR HELP: Have any other Dell laptop users reported this behavior? Could it be a compatibility issue with the PC audio chipset or drivers? What other steps can I take to reset ALL software and sound settings to a point where the configuration was working well? How about a walkthrough of the Windows sound settings to ensure that they are correctly set for the DDJ-SX?

UPDATE: The DDJ-SX works fine when I plug it into a USB 3.0 port, but still no longer outputs audio with any of the built-in USB 2.0 ports. On USB 2.0 ports (all 4 of the built-in USB ports on my laptop) the DDJ-SX does not output any audio. I happen to have a USB 3.0 adapter for this laptop, which swaps in when I remove the DVD drive. The moment I plug the DDJ-SX into one of these USB 3.0 ports it outputs audio as expected. Nothing changes in the Windows sound settings between when I have the DDJ-SX connected to either the 2.0/3.0 ports (Windows identifies it as the same device)…

After spending a total of 90 minutes on hold with Pioneer phone support today (and being disconnected twice) I’m at my wits end. Pioneer must address the bugs in the 1.0 driver version and get a new release out ASAP… I can’t have a “whoops, there is no audio” event during a paying gig!

@David > The engineers have advised me that this is a known Dell Computer issue. They recommend you visit the Dell website and update the USB device driver.

I have a question for my own insight, you mention since you went to a computer with i7 processor that you have no more audio dropouts?

@Gavin: Thank you for your reply. Can you please be more specific about this known issue with Dell computers? Which driver in particular is causing the issue? Which driver versions have been reported as problematic? I buy into the problem being related to the driver responsible for the built-in USB 2.0 ports, since all works well with my separate USB 3.0 adapter.

Before originally posting above I used the Dell website and Dell Client System Update software to update all device drivers to the latest. Please elaborate on this “known” issue for the sake of me and all Pioneer customers with Dell laptops.

@Jeff: I’m using a Dell laptop, model Latitude E6430. This laptop has an Intel Core i7 processor. This is the problematic computer, where the DDJ-SX worked fine out of the box then all of a sudden stopped outputting sound. My workaround is to use my OEM USB 3.0 adapter in place of the DVD-ROM drive, since this must use a driver that the DDJ-SX is happy with.

During troubleshooting I tried using my MacBook (successful, DDJ-SX works fine) and also tried upgrading from Windows 7 64-bit to Windows 8 64-bit on a spare HDD that I have (the issue persisted over to Windows 8, so it could be a BIOS compatibility issue).

This is my post from Serato website. I need help with this as soon as possible. My next gig is less than a week away. PLEASE HELP!

I cannot get any sound to come out of the new ddj sx bought 2 months ago. I have tried on my laptop and now my desktop. I have uninstalled and reinstalled all the latest drivers and software, tried new cables and even updated/reinstalled USB (Serato DJ 1.1.2 (11205), pioneer firmware 1.0.5, pioneer ASIO 1.0.1). It worked fine out of the box and last night it would not play at my gig at all. I had to download Virtual DJ and wing it. Here's what it does... I connect as I should, power up the ddj sx and then start Serato dj. At first it says no audio device connected but then it shows up. Everything comes up and I can even see the ddj sx in the list of devices under the device manager. I also am sure it is not the default device in my sound control panel based on another thread. On the screen I can load a track and the play button works but the platter acts weird. If you spin it fast it only acts on the track slowly. The other buttons work when you push them on the ddj sx but no lights come up on the channel indicator nor in the master when you turn up the trim and master and also the headphone out. The odd thing is there is music on the channel indicator in the software but not in the master. I have all the knobs up but here is the disconnect. I cannot adjust the trim or masters in the software. Just like I can't on the controller. This seems to be the only thing not working. I also have tried to input a device using RCA cables to the back into channel 3 set to CD but nothing. My computer is a stripped down HP set for performance only, i5, 3.2 GHz, 8 GB RAM, 64 bit on the desktop and laptop is an HP dv7 set for performance only i5-2450M, 2.5 GHz, 6 GB RAM, 64 bit both on Windows 7 home premium Service Pack 1. It was doing great up until last night. PLEASE help!

UPDATE: When I have a track loaded and playing I can adjust the trim in the software but not on the ddj sx. I also can adjust the main out in the software but not on the ddj sx. There are still no lights in the master out in the software or on the ddj sx. All the other buttons including auto-loop and the pressure pads work on the waveform, just no output. The slider for changing pitch ahve no affect but I can use the hot keys and pitch bend in the software. The platter acts like it's not in vinyl mode but it is and doesn't matter when I switch modes. Sync button works and will change bpm. Just trynig to try everything I can think of. Thanks.

UPDATE: Back again. Just installed Serato DJ 1.1.2 on a Macbook Pro 2.4 GHz, i7, 4GB running OSX 10.7.5. I tried all three USB ports on the machine and STILL THE SAME THING! I loaded a track on all 4 decks and nothing. I have the switches all set to "thru". All faders are up and cross fader in the middle. I have switched the input select through all the different assigns. Same as before... I can see in the software the level lights and I can change the trim in the software but there is still no level lights on the master out top left with the pot moved up and down. No sound pots work (trim, eq's, lpf/hpf, tempo slider but all the other buttons work. I can scroll through my library and load tracks from the ddj sx. The f/x buttons work on the controller. It seems like there is a disconnect between the software and mixer section of the ddj sx. I am leaning very close to a hardware problem at this point. PLEASE respond to this and help identify the issue.
