Music Lagging while browsing through folders in Window Explorer - CDJ2000 , DJM900 Nexus, VDJ 7

Got a small problem, appreciate your suggestions if you have any

My Setup: 2 CDJ2000, DJM900 Nexus, VDJ 7 running on a Win7 64bit. The CDJ and the Mixer are connected to the PC and using the soundcard of the mixer rather than the soundcard of the CDJ2000s.

My Main Hard Drive is a Solid State Drive which VDJ is installed on, all the music is on second HD.

My Problem is i keep getting lag in the music while its playing (Sound hiccup) when i am looking through Window explorer and browsing from one folder to the other.

I have this setup in a popular club and is embarrassing to hear this lag in a song every time i double click into a folder in Explorer to look for something.

Any Suggestion would be greatly apreciated.

@Eddy > Obviously sounds more like a VirtualDJ issue than Pioneer but lets see if we can help you. What are your laptop specs? It sounds like VDJ might be hogging resources (RAM).

I would ask what kind of security / AV software you're running and if you have any other things like drive indexing (the Windows search agent, etc) running as well.

Sorry for the delay i was trying to gather the info for you.

About the specs it is not a Laptop its a PC which i put together last year, so its pretty powerful in terms of spec , i have attached the invoice when i purchased the system and it has all the specs with the exact model numbers i am hoping this will help you. I have Panda Cloud anti-virus running on it which uses very little resources and does not do a file scan if i remember correctly , it just checks things coming in and out of the system. I myself am an intermediate PC engineer and have built the system myself and wondering if i must have missed something. For instance i have 2 hardrives in the system one for the operating system (C:) and the other for the Data (D: Music ) , however as i didn't have much space to put my Music Videos on Drive D: i put those on Drive C: as well. So i am wondering if the lagging issue i get is due to the way i setup the PC and the structure of the files.

There is a lot of files i admit , i am also wondering if maybe that might also be the issue . I work more with Video Clips rather than simply Audio and deal with larger files in general as i download/purchase Video Clips in 1080P where possible.

I hope this added more info to the setup , if there is anything else i can provide you with to help you please dont hesitate to ask.

Thanks again for looking into this.

Ok, I don't see in your invoice list where you have a Solid State drive - there are 2 SATA drives - Barracuda and WesternDigital.  But both are 7200RPM drives so should be sufficient enough for good data access speed.

What I am curious about is you mention Windows Explorer; why are you using Windows Explorer to look through your collection?  Or, is that what you are calling VirtualDJ's Folder panel ?

Some recommendations though -

  1. Turn OFF all Anti-Virus software.  If you can't exit it from a taskbar tray icon, then kill it in the Windows Task Manger.

  2. You have a 2TB and 1TB drive in your system and you say that you didn't have enough space for all your videos?  How large is the average file?

  3. How many processes are running according to the Windows Task Manger?

  4. Have you scanned ALL your files in VirtualDJ?

  5. What are the settings in your VirtualDJ -> Config -> Browser tab for items in the Info Gathering section -> Read ID3 Tags, Cover, Search Database, etc.

  6. Have you follow any of the optimization tips from the VirtualDJ VDJPedia Wiki site?

Also, since you are running videos; you might want to make sure you are running the absolute latest video drivers for your card.

Thanks for you reply Chris,

About the SSD your actually right , i checked and its not an SSD HD, but i dont mind upgrading the drive to an SSD and reinstalling everything back on the new drive if it means i wont have these hiccup issues. do you advise that ?

About the windows explorer , i did actually mean windows explorer , as in sometimes while VDJ is running i need to find a file that i cant remeber where i put and need to do a general search of the complete drive , or even looking for a logo to display on the screens for example. so when i do anything like that the songs jitter while playing.

  1. Turn OFF all Anti-Virus software.  If you can't exit it from a taskbar tray icon, then kill it in the Windows Task Manger.

I have turned off the Antivirus even unistalled and tested it and it still does the glitch

  1. You have a 2TB and 1TB drive in your system and you say that you didn't have enough space for all your videos?  How large is the average file?

I am using high quality video files as i am displaying them on HD projectors all over the club ,  i have about 350 Gigs of Video tracks on the (C:) Hard Drive, the files vary , i have about 150 tracks which are file size betweem 200 MB - 500 MB Per file, but the bulk of my collection is between 40 MB - 200 MB i have over one thousand tracks like that.

  1. How many processes are running according to the Windows Task Manger?

Please see Attached Screen Capture of my Task manager

  1. Have you scanned ALL your files in VirtualDJ?

If by Scan you mean , Right click the folder and select "Add to Search Database " then yes , but no i have not done any other function of that sort. Shall i ? please elaborate on hot to achieve this step efficiently.

  1. What are the settings in your VirtualDJ -> Config -> Browser tab for items in the Info Gathering section -> Read ID3 Tags, Cover, Search Database, etc.

Please see attached Screen Captures

  1. Have you follow any of the optimization tips from the VirtualDJ VDJPedia Wiki site?

Not yet but now that i am reading some of this i will apply and try that also

I can confirm that i have the latest Video Graphics Driver also.

Thank you for trying to help out , i really appreciate it.

Looking forward to hearing from you

Unfortunately not, i was about to give up on this by not using any other application while using VDJ, but you know sometimes your looking for something that you need on the Hard drive, like a logo of a client to put on the Video screens or an old song that you have on an external drive that you plug in and need to search for a song that is not yet added to the database of VDJ , then you have no choice but to use Window Explorer and when i do that with every click there is a clear music hiccup and sounds like a CD skip.

i have not received a reply since my last post , maybe i should just Reformat the system and try installing everything fresh ? if so , what is the best way to do without having the same problem ? Upgrade my main HD to SSD ?  i am ready to do anything to solve this issue so any advise is welcomed.

@Eddy > I mean an upgrade to SSD would be better but it shouldn't really be necessary. Your computer should be packing enough power to perform as required. It is a custom build, right? Is everything definitely setup properly?

After that, I'd follow the optimisation techniques Chris pointed out above and see how far that gets you.
