DJM-S9 Crossfader cut in/silence setting

What does everyone think about the default amount of silence present at the end of each side of the cross fader when the laptop is not connected? I dunno about you guys, but I still enjoy coming home sometimes and practicing my cuts without needing my laptop out.

Check out this video for what I am referring to...

I really feel that they need to make the default amount smaller in another firmware update.

New software for the S9 was released today - give that a whirl first.

This definitely needs to be changed. I don't want to have a laptop connected every time I use the mixer. A lot of the times I just like to cut, and I cut a lot with just traditional vinyl. If this is being marketed as a turntablists mixer then I'm sure you know that turntablists are originally vinalysts. A 2.5-3mm cut in silence is unacceptable when just using a laptop is not connected. If the pads can act as triggers for effects when a laptop is not connected then I am sure that the cut in can be changed and saved. Please, someone from Pioneer chime in and give us an answer. Will a future update allow us to save our desired cut in or it's not going to happen. I payed over 3000 for two S9s. I feel the least you could do is give us an answer. Thanks.

@Pulse new software today? I see the firmware and drivers from 2 days ago but not today. And I can't update the firmware because it says my DJMS9 is not connected when in fact it is. Serato DJ sees my S9 just fine. Any thoughts? JaeOne has confirmed that even with the firmware update and driver update the cut in issue is still there.

Nah, I had already upgraded my Utility and Driver software. It doesn't address the issue.

No dice.

For me this is a deal breaker too as I still cut/juggle without a laptop maybe about 50% of the time. Although I'm sure this can be addressed with a firmware update, I think this issue just needs to get the right visibility. I think this is an important issue that needs to be fixed ASAP.

Exactly. It's not like I am asking for Serato FX to be used with no laptop. LOL.

Yes, we understand the mixer is also designed for use with DVS, but even then, the crossfader settings should not need to rely on the laptop, period. Most battle DJ's still do a tremendous amount of work/practice with out their laptops.

I'm not even sure why such an adjustment parameter exist. Just make it match the other mixers on the market in terms of standard silence/cut in space and leave it alone.

Correct, the settings should be retained - I was under the impression this update addressed that issue. I'll put it back to the engineers.

That would be awesome. I really don't wanna have to return it and get the Rane 62. The S9 is an amazing mixer otherwise, but being that the crossfader is extremely important, I can't overlook it.

Pulse, any info on if a faceplate replacement can be sent under warranty? Paint chipping around the crossfader so soon shouldn't happen...I feel like maybe there's a manufacturer defect on the paint job on my S9 faceplate. Thanks!

Let's keep the thread on track. I will definitely back you and agree with you about the paint issue, but I think we should keep that a separate thread.

Pulse, any updates regarding the cut lag setting?

I remember that the 909 had a physical knob to adjust this that ranged from 1-6mm.

Perhaps the engineers could set the default to 1mm, and if people want it tighter or larger than that, they can use the software, but the more I spend with my s9, the more I feel that the default amount they chose is absolutely ridiculous.

Re: faceplate, see the other question you guys have started. I've inquired with engineering about that.

Pulse, I appreciate you really looking into it and not blowing it off. Thank you, seriously. This really is important to many of us scratch/battle heads. This mixer is damn near perfect besides that.

Thank you Pulse! Would be huge if we could get replacement faceplates and also correct this cut in/silence setting. Love this mixer otherwise

There's allready a video on youtube about this issue.
And I think I've also seen the solition on the Serato forums.
The cut-in has to be adjusted via the mixer utility software and is also affected by the tension poti.

Dude, I am the one who made the video, and the video link is the first post of this topic. LOL.

We know about the utility. LOL

Have you read through the posts in this thread? The issue is that it doesn't retain the setting you want when disconnected (bad design). They either need to allow the setting to be saved, or they simply need to update the firmware so that a shorter cut lag is then saved as a default into the mixer.

I'm also the same "JaeOne3345" on the Serato forum. LOL

Can't find the other video yet, but as far as I remember you have to set the fader curve to fast/sharp and the feel poti must be set all the way to the lightest feel.
That's the only workaround that I heard of at the moment.

There is currently 1 workaround.. And it's keeping the mixer hooked to your laptop... Trust us it's been a while we have the mixer

And the feeling adjust knob is mechanical not electronic... It can't alter the dead space in any way

Yeah, no disrespect to you, Grizu, but whatever video/whoever said that is full of shit.

I've complained about this since the first week I had it. My original post was deleted.

I don't mind the cut lag being adjustable with software, but the default setting is garbage.

The crazy thing is, that in this video the guy unplugged his computer and also said that it absolutely makes no sense, that the 1mm cut-in only works "offline" when the feel adjustment is set to the lightest setting which for us logically thinking people is not connected to any audio signal.

In my opinion this is clearly a firmware issue, but I'm sure I've seen this crazy video last night. Not beeing able to find it anymore drives me crazy at the moment.

Even if it sounds super strange, did you try adjusting the curve in the software with feel adjustment all the way to lightest setting and then unplugging the computer?
Really just wanna help and can't test myself, because my S9 is still in preorder status :(

I understand you're trying to help, but I actually have the mixer in front of me. I talk to Mickswell often on the phone about this too. We are both at the same
place. None of the things you're recommending help, bro.

I'm not sure how else to say it.

No usb = defaults to 3mm.

Usb = cut lag is set to whatever you have it on in the utility.

I am updated to latest drivers, utility, and firmware.

You should be able to search your YouTube viewing history if some other video exist regarding the issue. Let me know.

No history, I never login on Youtube and I mix up being online on a phone, pad and computer all day, but allways close apps and browsers after surfing plus delete cache and history. All I remember is, that it showed up after watching Mojaxx's review, some unboxing and your video with the issue.

I hope Pioneer will jump in and come up with a quick solution!

No need to get into arguments about who said what where, the important thing is the engineers are investigating this issue and as I previously posted, we'll let you know when they have more information for us. Thanks!
