Just got 2 xdj-1000s and love them! So far have only used usb sticks, but have more than 300 gb of music that I use frequently. Does anyone have exprience using a portable HDD of that size? I am thinking of buying WD My Passport Ultra with 1 TB. Will it be fast enough since it is not a flash drive and is only powered from the usb connection?
I've never had luck with WD Passport drives, consider something else instead. As @Marek suggests, an SSD would be a much better option. While they are slightly more expensive, the performance gains far outweigh the cost difference.

As the usb port of the XJ is giving 1A, you should be ok.
But in my opinion, you'd make better buying an external enclosure and putting inside 1TB SSD drive - less consumption, significantly higher speed, enough space...
