[CLOSED] XDJ R1 next firmware update? Product is currently not fit for sale.

Hi, I  like many others here recently received the XDJ R1. I also have CDJ 1000's and a DJM850 so I am a regular pioneer user. I purchased my unit with a 30 day money back guarantee which gives me two more weeks to make up my mind. Please let me know how far along pioneer are with fixing or updating the firmware for the following issues:

  1. Loop not working properly, skipping on tracks which play fine on other pioneer devices.

  2. Track jumping while using jogwheels to scratch.

  3. BPM wandering and losing sync after 20/30 seconds.

  4. Sound quality poor on usb playback of mp3 @ 320kbps and all. Sound okay on midi use.

  5. Some tracks stopping mid play with no explanation.

  6. Hardware volume sliders becoming dead when using effects on app.

  7. FX hardware knobs same. They should reset fx when the app is back to the browser window but don't.

  8. Failure of unit to map BPMS properly or loop on CD even after a number of minutes.

I understand this is a new product but this is a long list of faults, there may be more which I have yet to find. The unit would suit me perfectly for mobile use if it worked as advertised but I literally have two weeks to decide. In the meantime one of your competitors has a similar product in the offing coming soon. I would appreciate your time in answering these issues. I understand that Gavin is answering these posts as an intermediary and thank him for his time but the engineers who released this product without resolving this issue have damaged my faith in pioneer immensely. I am a qualified electronic engineer and these faults became evident to me after an hour's testing so why did nobody at the manufacturing stage sort them? Thanks for your time.

I, too, am returning my R1 to the store.  I am one of the lucky ones that bought it from a dealer that offers a 30 day money-back guarantee.  Sad to say...but...this is my first experience with Pioneer equipment and it has been a horrible one.  Communication has been horrendous on this "forum" and its sad to see so many people being affected by this. I wish everyone luck and that the unit becomes usable in the future.  I will not be using one again.

To Pioneer:  You have serious quality control and communication issues.  This fiasco with the R1 is completely unacceptable and I will never purchase (or even look at) another piece of equipment from your company.  If anyone asks, I will have nothing good to say about Pioneer or this product.  Word of mouth is going to kill this product because you guys released it without proper testing.  Customers are NOT beta testers.  If you believe they are then, sadly, you will lose out in the long run.

Unacceptable.  R1 is going back tomorrow. Done.

And thanks you Anthony for all of your hard work putting the videos together.  This is something that you should not have had to do (as it was their job) but I do thank you for everything you have done on here.

No probem DJ-JW, thanks to you too. By the way my last pioneer set up of DJM800 and CDJ100mk3's have worked without a flaw for over 5 years so although pioneer have a lot of work to do in the PC interface market and need to hire some decent programmers their hardware is generally good so don't let this one bad experience turn you off them for life. I just got a set of Nexus 2000's and they are brilliant, although overpriced.

enough to play a DJ in front of them for 1 hour to see all the problems! it's simple!

@Anthony > Thanks for all your help, sadly I'm one of those who cannot get a full refund only an exchange (considering an SX) but I really wanted to ditch the laptop and this unit had so much promise in that direction, I am also a previous Pioneer owner although it's been quite a while (still have my CDJ-100's and DJM-300 from the late 90's and they still work!), as far as the back and forth between Pioneer and us it seems to me that the first batch of units shipped for retail may have been a bad batch since the engineers are saying that they cannot replicate some of the issues on their unit (which means they will not be able to fix it), maybe I'm just looking for a silver lining in all of this and to Gavin, appreciate the effort but if the videos with explanations you and the engineers had requested and subsequently made by owners are not enough to show the all the issues with this unit then nothing else will, thanks again to Anthony and everyone that have kept these R1 threads alive, good luck.

Thanks Anthony and more people to show all the flaws, Yesterday I received my XDJ-R1 and today I am going to return it to the seller. In addition to the errors shown here, I could not make a connection via wifi with my ipad. I have fear that not only be a firmware error and also be a hardware defect. I am very disappointed by pioneer. I hope you can resolve soon. I'll wait a second round of this beautiful all in one.

I solved the problem, I created the playlist on rekord box instead of folders and played last night for 6 hours straight without any freezing! all perfect loop etc etc.

I have had the R1 on order from my UK dealer since it was first announced no names mentioned but they happen to be the largest supplier of Pioneer equipment in the UK,as soon as the product came in stock they informed me that they had tested it and found major faults and returning them to Pioneer until all the glitches were sorted which i thought was very responsible, just a shame that other retailers are still offering this product for sale at this present time when it is widely known in the industry that this product is not yet ready for the market very irresponsible why have pioneer not informed them to withdraw the product then perhaps we would not have so many disgruntled customers,a public relations disaster in my opinion you have certainly dropped the ball Pioneer withdraw the product now.

I was planning to buy this unit but reading all this stuff, and my experience with Pioneer relating firmware\software updates for the cdj2000nxs and rekordbox, I think I will skip this for a few months.

They have clearly issues all over their productlines.

Sad....

My shop has also stopped selling it, and it's also a major player.   Pioneer needs to be more responsible as the next update probably won't even fix it 100% as they're rushing to get it out.   Lucky my pioneer plasmas never had these firmware faults!!

What surprises me is that Pioneer are letting outlets in the UK continue to sell the R1 to unsuspecting public knowing quite well that they are faulty ,and not making a public statement to withdraw unit until sorted unbelievable.

@Gavin > I hope you guys are not rushing the update just to appease people and what issues is the FW update going to address specifically?

Good news.

Will the sync also be solved?

Also i'm experiencing sound chopping when master tempo is on and pitch is shifted.

I just spoke to one of the guys at the store where I bought mine, he told me they'd be happy to take it back but his pioneer rep told him there's a firmware update coming tomorrow so I said I'd wait and see!

Hi Pioneer and everybody else.

I’ve just arrived back home after a 9-day in a row gig at a small city festival in Sweden. I thought this would be a good opportunity for me to try out the XDJ-R1, which I just acquired.

Unfortunately, I experienced some really huge bugs/problems with the XDJ-R1, which in my opinion makes it a product you can’t work with or rely on if Pioneer doesn’t have the ability to work out the problems mentioned below. Problem 1 and 2 seems to be problems that no one has mentioned so far.

1) Track’s load, but are unable to play.

It was a disappointment for me to find out that I was unable to play Avicii’s new song “Wake Me Up” with the XDJ-R1. I thought something was wrong with the file (bought from itunes), so I downloaded 2 other versions and tried to play them, however with the same result. I have no problem finding the tracks in the playlist, they also load into the decks, title information, time, bpm etc. are correctly shown. The play button is at constant light which indicates that the song are playing (This occurs regardless whether the auto-cue function is on or off) but the timer of the track isn’t moving and no vu-level lights appears. To sum up, the track isn’t playing.

I then tried to play other songs from avicii and realized that the same problem occured with every other song from avicii for me. Moving further on, I realized that tracks that avicii had done with any other artist (for example “Avicii feat Salem Al Fakir”) loaded and played without any problem. This led me to the conclusion that there must be some type of database/library problem.

I then tried to add the itunes bought wake me up version again in rekordbox, but this time I changed the artist name in rekordbox to “Bvicii” and ejected/created the library again in rekordbox. This solved the problem and the track was now playable. Browsing the “artist category” on the ipad with remotebox I noticed there was 2 artists named “Avicii” in the artist category with the exact same spelling. This should be impossible in my opinion and I guess this has something to do with avicii songs being unable to play for me, at least as long they are named avicii. In one of these artist categories remotebox putted the song “Fade into darkness”. In the other of these artist categories with the same name the other avicii songs were placed.

I then went back to rekordbox, erased the fade into darkness song from rekordbox, ejected/updated the library to see If the problem still occurred, which it unfortunately did. Remotebox still thought found fade into darkness under one of the avicii categories, even though I erased that track in rekordbox (and after that updated the library correctly).

In this context two other things should be mentioned which could be useful for the engineers in a troubleshooting process.

a) Browsing the “contexts” on the usb-stick on a file browser in mac, it only has one folder named avicii, not two like in recodbox (this applies even before I erased the fade into darkness track in rekordbox).

b) The I tunes bought version of wake me up played with no problem under the real artist name (avicii) if I exported it to an usb-stick with only that song (XDJ-R1 prepared stick)

c) The problem also occurred approximately 2 other times with other artist names.

d) The problem also occurs without using remotebox, which means it occurs If I try to load the track only using the XDJ-R1

A screendump of the the 2 avicii artist categories are attached, see 6.jpg

2) After a certain time, the XDJ-R1 states that rekordbox analysed tracks no longer are analysed, which makes the quantize and sync functions impossible to use for more and more tracks on the usb-stick the more you’re out playing.

This is a bug that I really can not understand the logic of. In fact, I can load a track, the quantize function and sync function works perfectly. The next day I start my XDJ-R1 and load the exact same track from the same playlist in remotebox and try to activate the quantize or sync function the XDJ-R1 shows me the message “NOT ANALYSED”. However, all tracks on my usb-sticks are analysed with rekordbox 2.0.7.

I’m not sure why this is happening, however it seems as tracks I play more often and play around more with are more likely to be descbribed as “NOT ANALYSED” tracks by the XDJ-R1 the next time I play them. Just to ensure my self one more that the tracks in fact are analysed in rekordbox I inserted the usb-stick on my computer, opened up rekordbox and loaded some of the tracks that the XDJ-R1 described as “not analysed”. They are still analysed in rekordbox, the bpm, beatgrid and everything else is there. However something seems to have happened with the tracks. There are now some yellow bars at the wave information, something I’ve never seen in rekordbox before (Photos of this are attached, see 1-5.jpg. It’s almost as the XDJ-R1 has corrupted the files somehow. This yellow bars seem to appear only on the tracks that the XDJ-R1 recognize as “not analysed”. Trying to update the library does not change the tracks that the XDJ-R1 recognize as “not analysed”. I also tried to copy one of the “corrupt” tracks directly from the usb-stick to my computer and then put them back into a new playlist in rekordbox, just to see if the yellow bars existed on the copy as well. Rekordbox then started to analyse the song from scratch, no BPM values, beat grid information of yellow bars where found.

To sum up, every time I start my XDJ-R1, more songs are recognized as “not analysed” which of course is annoying.

3) XDJ-R1 freezes when remotebox goes out of wifi-range and then returns back into wifi range.

This doesn’t happens every time, however, it happened 2 times under 9 days of playing for me. When freezing, the XDJ-R1 is unable to do anything, this applies both when trying to do something with remotebox or directly from the XDJ-R1. When freezing it’s impossible to load tracks, play tracks, push any button except stand-by button.

4) The XDJ-randomly freezes

Even without the wifi-problem described in (3) my XDJ-R1 just started to freeze (randomly as far as I can tell) approximately one time every night. A lot of the time the XDJ-R1 creates something that can be describen as a noisy test sound when this occurs; the sound is impossible to lower before rebooting the XDJ-R1.

5) Wrong information about artist and time are shown.

Now and then the display on the XDJ-R1 says that the track is 00:00:00 even when it is actally playing. Other times it says another track is playing than the track that is actually playing.

6) Adding a single track to an XDJ-R1 prepared stick takes approximately on hour

Not sure if this is a bug. However, if you an usb-stick with approximately 2000 songs and you want to add one single song to the usb stick, when ejecting it rekordbox has to build up the library again from scratch. This means in practice that it is impossible to add tracks to your set less than one hour before a gig.

7) Only standard categories are shown in remotebox

Not sure if this is a bug either. However, as people already mentioned, it is impossible to put more active categories to remotebox even though Pioneer has responded at their YouTube channel that this  should be possible.

8) Not possible to search for tracks without remotebox, not possible to access historyfiles, the XDJ-R1 does not create historyfiles.

All of these features, avaible on the cheapest Pioneer cdj’s (the 350’s) and also on the XDJ-AERO (correct me if I’m wrong here) are not available on the XDJ-R1, not sure if this is a bug or a business decision.

Think that’s it for now. All tracks are analysed with the latest version of rekordbox and the usb is set up for the XDJ-R1, latest firmware installed on the XDJ-R1 (1.0.4), latest version of remotebox installed.

Thankful for help, firmware updates and other solutions fixing these problems.

Kind Regards,

Tobias
