RECORDING SOUNDS TERRIBLE

All my levels are lower than they should be and the recording audio still sounds terrible.

In order to get help from the forum members, you need to provide some more information so we can assist: OS, DJ Setup, audio interface (if not built into mixer), etc. Cheers.

Actually the recording itself is ok, the bass seems way too high. The recording volume is set to the lowest it can be. The low eq is at 12 o'clock.

That is strange. How hot is your recording level vs. your master out level? In other words, is the meter for your recording level greater than the master out level?

I have the recording meter as low as it can go and the master volume has 1 or 2 green

Assuming you've selected "Master Out" as the recording source and you're using RB DJ in "software mixer mode", ideally you want a hot signal in the record meter–when two tracks are playing during your mix, the recording meter levels should just barely reach yellow. After recording, play the Wav file of your performance in iTunes or other media player. If it's still sounding distorted there is a conflict going on somewhere in the signal chain. If that's the case, @Pulse will be able to help.

They are barely touching yellow and the bass still seems to be overpowering.

Assuming the low end distortion has occurred on several tunes you've tested, I'm afraid I'm stumped. I'm not honestly sure what would cause the low end frequencies to boost/distort while keeping the other frequencies in tact, it's as if there's a hidden system EQ that is boosting the low end. Are you on a Mac or PC? Have you checked out the system audio settings to make sure there's no funny business going on (i.e. "colored" sound enhancements, sliders engaged that shouldn't be, etc.). If you're on a MacBook Pro, press the volume button on the keyboard to see if that does anything for you. @Pulse will check-in here at some point, he may be able to provide some additional suggestions.

One other thought: Prior to purchasing XDJ's I DJ'd on a Native Instruments S4 with Traktor. One odd thing was that the Master Output on the controller was independent of the Master Output within the software. By any chance, is there a Master Out on your controller that is separate from the software's Master Out? In other words, does the Master Out on your controller mimic the software's Master Out? If it does not, that may be the culprit. There could be some digital clipping taking place in the signal path.

When I go to change the master output level with the cursor it says that it's controlled via the DDJ-SB.

Interesting. So in addition to having to set the master output value, you have to to set the value of the recording level and they're independent from one another. Out of curiosity, are there any other sources you can select aside from Master Output as the recording source?

We tried a lot with windows 10 and DDJ-SB, but cannot replicate it.
Would you upload the recorded sound or video?
