When I start up Rekordbox, it gives me the option to update. But, when I hit start update, Rekordbox closes. Thoughts?
It's supposed to - the updater forces rekordbox closed in order to complete the process. If it's not completing the next step (of downloading the update and installing it), manually download the 4.0.1 file from rekordbox.com.

What was the purpose of the recent update(4.0.1)
What did it fix or added? other software updates always tell you what is being done
