Rekordbox and Mixed in Key

I have installed Mixed in Key and analysed my tracks. They show up fine with KEY info. I've then followed the instructions under Personalize --> Connect with DJ Software for Rekordbox.

But nothing shows up in Rekordbox after I choose "Uploads tags".

I suspect the problem is that the "comments" column is not showing up but I cannot find out how to make it show up. Have been deep in settings but no luck.

Can anyone help? I bought a 58 usd product and right now have absolutely no use of it ...

Thanks in advance!!

Michael

Thanks. I have the same settings. I believe MiK works as it should. The problem is in Rekordbox where a new column with the MiK key info simply just won't appear. Or I should say, there is a Rekord box column but it's the RB one and there is no key info in this either.

It's really weird. And really annoying.

Do you have any idea what I'm missing?

Thanks again.

I think maybe we're getting there.

My screen looks like this

hmm.. is it because I have to buy the Performance version?

I'm ready to do that but do you know if it is included when purchasing Pioneer hardware? I just purchased the XDJ-RX three weeks ago and not sure if that includes software/Performance version.

And thanks again! Really appreciate your help!

The Key info should show up if you go to Collection and select all tracks (CMD+A), Right-click and select Reload Tags

I have done that (selecting all tracks, right-clicking and choosing Reload Tags). But nothing happens on the screen. There is no column with key info in it. Or I should say, there is a key column but there is nothing in it and it's the same column I had before I installed MiK.

It should work with the free version of rekordbox.

I think rekordbox dj only is bundled with the Pioneer rekordbox controllers (DDJ-RZ, DDJ-RX, DDJ-RB and DDJ-RR) so you'll need to buy it or subscribe for a monthly subscription.

Hmm, strange... Sorry, can't help you then :(

BTW, I'm only using AIFF files, could be worth trying with a AIFF file.

Okay. So I said yes to the 30 day trial period and my screen now looks like this. I checked key and it shows up now as you can see. But when I choose all and right-click nothing is added in the key-column...

Really testing my nerves here.

Have you changed your "column" selection to "key"? That will do it for you i believe. It is in your settings tab

Not sure what you mean with "settings tab". I have enabled key by right clicking and added a key column. But when I select all tracks and choose "upload tags" nothing happens.

In the screen shot just above you can see what my screen looks like.

I'm at a lost end here. Much appreciated if you can help.

@Michael > If MIK is writing the key to the COMMENTS section, it will not show up in rekordbox's KEY column.  It will show up in the COMMENTS column.

I can assure you this works, as Oakstream was pointing out.

@Official comment Pioner

You wrote:

I can assure you this works, as Oakstream was pointing out.

My comment:

Don't like to differ but this is exactly what I'm doing and I can assure you this does NOT work.

Let me go through what I've done/doing step by step.

I have just installed Rekordbox 4.1.1 and I have installed MiK 7.5.2.

In the "Analyze and Browse" section of MiK I click "Add files" and choose all the tracks I want to analyze. So far everything seems fine. Below is a screenshot of my MiK application where Key has been added.

In MiK under "Update Tags" I check "Update common tags" and choose "Write only the key" and "Where to write it" check "Overwrite comments".

I then go to RekordBox and under "Collection" choose all my tracks, right click and choose "Reload Tags". And NOTHING happens. Nothing! Below a screenshot just before I choose "Reload Tags"

I have no idea what to do differently and believe I am following the instructions word by word. But it does NOT work.

Someone please help! Thank you

Have you tried to modify any other tags? Artist, Title etc. If not, can you do that and see if the tag updates when you Reload Tags?

Is the Comment tag being updated with the key from MIK?

Use iTunes or any other software of your choice to modify the tags.

How do I modify other tags? In MiK under Personalize --> update tags? What do I do?

As for your question "Is the comment tag being updated with the key from MiK" I don't know how to explain it any better than my description above. Yes, I have chosen "Overwrite comments" in MiK

Okay, I went into iTunes and updated Artist on a track, then back in RB to "reload tags". Nothing happens

Strange... Is your music files in the same location? Check if the track you edited in iTunes is in the same folder as the file in rekordbox.

Right click and Show in Explorer/Finder in both iTunes and rekordbox.

Also check if the files are write protected?

This is very strange.  You are taking all of the correct steps yet not seeing the result.  We must be overlooking something.  I'm assuming your tracks are not write protected since you can modify their tags in iTunes.

Let's try this...

  1. Remove some tracks from your rekordbox library (but do not delete them from your hard drive)
  2. Analyze them in MIK
  3. In rekordbox Analysis preferences, be sure both boxes are NOT ticked
  4. Import the newly analyzed tracks into rekordbox

I think I've found the problem. I'm using WAV files and I understand MiK cannot add tag information to WAV tracks. For that I have to use mp3 or AIFF files.

Is that correct?

And thanks to MiK for not putting a note on their goddamned website that WAV files aren't supported when it comes to tag information.

Just spent I don't know many hours trying to work this out.

Or a note in their goddamned MiK application.. Jeez

But thanks all here for your kind help. At least I found the answer in the end.

An alternative I have found which I hope helps others out, rather than having to use Mixed In Key, is to let Rekordbox analyse the keys and write them into the tags.

Then sort all your tunes in your collection by the Key column.

Highlight all your tracks with the Key 'A'

Open the track info view on the right of the browser

Search for the 'camelot wheel' in Google images and read off the corresponding key number for 'A major' = '11B' etc.

Type in '11B' into the Key field and hit enter - this will replace the Key tag on all your highlighted tracks at once.

Repeat up to 23 times for all the other keys.

However, it would be nice if Rekordbox gave you the option of choosing the format of the Key tag - maybe something for future updates?

Just to add to Dave Cox's comments above on analysing in Rekordbox....this sort of defeats the purpose of using MIK doesn't it?

1. Regardless of what you do in MIK, Rekordbox (using 5.0.3) still needs to analyze and overwrite key information in order to key sync and make recommendations of related files related by key.

2. After I realized this, the only thing I use MIK for now is to put Camelot Key and energy information in the comments column. I am debating whether I should continue doing this because I don't really use the energy information and searchability is limited since it is in the comments tag combined with key information.

3. Considering Cox's idea of overwriting Camelot Key information in the initial key field after Rekordbox analyzes, I don't see a reason to use MIK. especially since I have to analyze key anyway in MIK.

lastly, I was pretty disappointed and frustrated as well when I learned the hard way that MIK does not update WAV tags. I am likely going to do away with MIK altogether. I dont' see a need for it since I use RB
