When starting up RB, I got a message (I cant remember the exact words) something like 'Cant open RB, will attempt to restore from a previous backup)
Great, RB opened. However, I have lost playlists I organised a couple of days ago.
I have tried to restore a number of 'datafile.backup.edb' files from around the time I had completed the playlists, but I'm getting 'unable to restore database'.
I did managed to restore from a one datafile.backup, but it didnt have the playlist in.
Is there a separate file somewhere I can get the playllist info from ?

I hope you weren't trying to "restore" the backups using the restore tool within rekordbox, you change them from datafile.backup.edb to datafile.edb in the folder to have it pick up the previous dataset. Was that what you were doing? Don't open/close rekordbox in the meantime as you risk losing the backups.
