Should I buy a Toraiz or not ? :|

Hi peeps,

I've just read the first review here on Amazon : https://www.amazon.com/Pioneer-DJ-TSP-16-Professional-Sampler/dp/B01E3LCH9I#customerReviews

I must say I'm a bit puzzled... I was all ready to buy a unit, but now I'm lost. Has this guy written true facts ? The auto-slice fail ? That it's not close to an MPC, and not 10% of an Octatrack ? The unresponsive screen ? The tiny X as a close button ? The USB stick structure ?

Wow, wow, wow, if it is, then it's a HUGE failure... I was happy and ready to buy, but wow... Keeping my money for now, I guess :(

I know there are a lot of things to come with the forthcoming updates, but right now I think all these things are a bit too much unfinished stuff and limitations I can't understand - for a product that reads "Professional sampler".

It's not a rant, but I mean, this looks like the most awesome machine everyone's been expecting for quite a while, and it's not cheap. So am I just expecting too much, maybe ?

Please help me !

Hey Oper-8 don't let those comments confuse you l went through the same situation l looked at all the videos and reviews and forums. There will be always negative and positive reactions to everything. You have to determine if this device is right for what you want to do and feel confident about Pioneer. I have had mine for 3 days and it is what l expected it to be and l know Pioneer will listen to the customer for update requests. Hope this helps.

I wouldn't be swayed by one review, there's 3 up on sweetwater right now singing its praises.

Yes there's some needed features coming, but you always benefit ~ coming in at ground level ~ learning an instruments as it grows, and you grow into it.

I can tell you this, if you buy the sp-16, watch all the videos, and then spend some time with it, and still can't make something you're happy with, just quit. And I don't mean that to sound like a jerk, but really it's that good,  I'm coming from a pretty powerful home studio, designed around Ableton Live, and I can see myself using the 16 for seventy percent of my production- over time....but hey that's just me.

Thanks for the replies ! I've read the reviews on Sweetwater and I'm a bit more confident indeed :)

And yeah, I've already watched many (if not all available) videos already, but I guess I'll have to watch a few of them again. Same goes for the reviews.

The "unresponsive screen" from the Amazon review is still an issue for me. What would you say about yours ? Is it that terrible ?

Re Screen: I'm on an iPad all day every day for work,  and I don't see any difference in regards to responsiveness.

For my taste it's the best interface I've used for making music outside of the DM1 iPad app and Logic Pro. The combination of a high quality touch screen, good build quality of the knobs, 16 MPC-style pads and 16 TR-8-style sequencer buttons makes the Toraiz so easy to use that a couple of updates could make it the greatest dedicated standalone hardware of its generation. Here's to hoping the Toraiz team finishes the job!

In other words: the Toraiz is missing a couple features you might expect for the price, but an outstanding UI isn't one of them.

Thanks for all your replies ! I'm still in the "undecided" state, but close to 80 % positive, I'd say.

I have another question if you don't mind (and whether or not you like the original samples in the SP-16) : I'll buy my unit second-hand, so I guess the previous owner will have replaced a few original samples with his own stuff. If so, is there a way to "factory reset" the samples ? I'd love to hear the originals - might sound weird but, well, anyway.
