Pio DJ - Need Response on Sample Memory Issue

Guys

can you please respond with a proper information on the sample memory issue. My issue is that i am unable to load beyond 6 scenes , each scene with 16 different samples. Now i am able to load 12 scenes, 6 of them having the same 16 samples but with different triggers and FX settings.

I am just beginning to wonder whether with the new EFX and requests for additional EFX , the system RAM is capable of loading 16 scenes each scene with 16 different samples with different FX and routings.

I also doubt if you will ever be able to release the 32 sec sample limit with such RAM limitations. ( This being one main feature request)

Again it is important in the context of user transparency that you release some information about RAM utilization/allocation, workarounds and  system optimization tips. Otheerwise It appears the product currently is not capable of what it is supposed to do. Or you need to specify the 16 Scene , tracks and FX limitations.

No,this has been happening to me before the update and i got no answers or solutions but i could not pass 4 scenes loaded with 16 samples on each scene and if i try to load another pad/sample it says cannot load memory is full and i still have 6GB free space internal and i have a sandisk 128GB external as well

Are you guys storing your project via an external hard drive or internally?

My samples are on an external drive but project saved internally. I have 4 g space available internally. Am wondering how much the real ram space allocation is and shouldn't a firmware upgrade allow available HD space to offset RAM space ?

i save mine on both just in case anything happens to the usb drive or internal, but i save as package and project that way i won't loose the samples if an inconvenience were to happen.

Yeah Pioneer's gonna have to chime in on this....I would suggest saving your projects externally for the time being.

I haven't had any problems, but I've been storing all my projects to an external HD since the beginning.

@Jova back ups are always good. I personally use an HD with the Toriaz, just like I would have in a computer (pulse more storage) and keep my backup on a flash drive- never had an issue with audio stems on a flash drive, plus it's the easiest way to get them to the studio.

Yes am doing that . It looks the concept of 16scenes X 16 samples with 16X16 insert efx plus 16 master efx is just not possible. So the product doesn't do what it is supposed to. I just cannot go beyond 96 samples in a project.

It would be good to get clarity from Pioneer as to the amount of RAM available, so that we might plan our sessions and live gigs in an attempt to avoid potential embarrassing technical glitches.

I believe the Toraiz has 8GB of space for projects and 8GB of ram. You are trying to load 256 samples in to ram. If those samples are larger than 32mb each or if there are other things using up RAM, I can see where it might prevent you from loading.

Hi Craig, thanks for that. Can you remember from what source you heard / saw that there is 8GB of RAM?

Let Pio DJ respond - it's important not just planning sets for future but a fundamental product limitation that has to be highlighted to customers.

I believe it was one of the original product demo videos. They said there is 8GB of internal storage AND 8GB of system RAM. My guess is that every sample, effect, pattern, etc uses up RAM so it makes sense that it would get full if the samples you're using are too large. Try loading it up with 256 copies of the same, mono kick drum sample and see if you still have an issue. If you're trying to load up 256, stereo multi bar loops, there just might not be enough RAM to hold it all.

Thanks Craig. Makes sense, there has to be some limits!

If this is the case, a management tool, or at least a visualisation of usage would be useful.

It is odd that they don't tell you how much RAM you're using or how much you have free. They've kind of kept the amount of system RAM it has a secret. It's not published in the manual or any official documents. It talks about the flash storage but not RAM specifically.

Someone in another thread said the memory gets full at 2GB so it would seem perhaps, the Toraiz has 2GB of ram instead of 8GB like the gentleman in the video stated?

Precisely why I think they need to come clean OR give details of an optimal set up. Your point is right in that it could be possible that the system cannot take load of stero samples , so limitation is not just 32 sec , but type of sample, no of bars ,no of fx .......

This explains it all,the reason it is limited to 32 sec samples and i don't think it will change, time for new hardware pioneer we need a keyboard like the rolands fantom 6 but better and that can be linked to the cdj,but something that actually works and worth the money,i don't think the toraiz was worth the dollars but too late can't return it only sell it for a little less and take the loss😠

I think just knowing how much RAM the box has would go a long way. Just like every sampler ever made, there is a limit on the amount of data that the RAM can hold. Different samples take up more or less RAM. It can load stereo samples just fine but at some point, depending on the length and quality of the samples, you are going to run out of RAM. Each project is going to be different for each user.

Singapore has a lemon law so if I can prove it was mis sold - which is the case here , I can get a full refund. But that's not my intention. Pioneer dj is owned by KKR so it's not a Japanese co in a remote village anymore. They just need to update the manual , and state the product limitations

Now that's just silly. The Fantom has a max of 1GB RAM. MPC1000 = 128MB, MPC2000 = 32MB. 2GB of sample RAM is a crazy amount if that's what the Toraiz has. The 32 second thing is lame but I would call it a stretch to say you can't possibly work with only 2GB of sample RAM.

How is it "mis sold"? They told you, you could load up any sample, regardless of size and fill every slot in every scene with every effect and not run out of memory? I don't recall that claim, ever.

Agreed, the Toraiz cannot be limitless - it has a finited amount of storage (8GB) and RAM (2GB? TBC by Pinoeer hopefully).

It would be useful to allow us to configure / prioritorise the use of this (kind of like how the octatrack allows you to dedicated RAM to specific tracks). This would of course be even better if we were allowed to say reduce the overall amount of sample RAM, but in return have 2 or 4 tracks allwed to be >32 seconds :) I wonder if this is techynically feasible.

Regarding mis-advertising etc. I think all manufacturers take liberties with promotional hype and some sleight of meaning when having to sell their products. I don't think there has been any major mis-selling here. Some disappointing restrictions and missing features, yes, and maybe these will be addressed.

My unit emits static when no audio outputs are plugged in and it is powered on, i.e., it uses "me" as a ground. I'm not happy about it, but I find myself being productive with the Toraiz and enjoy using it alot (more than my (more powerful) octatrack. However, with all this, I've decided to keep it, warts and all. Ask yourself if you can / are creative and productive with it, despite the limitations (which can actually help too!).

The Toraiz isn't perfect for sure but considering all the crap I've put up with over the last 20+years with samplers in general, this thing is absolutely astounding in it's function and UI. The single finest UI I've ever experienced in a sampler. There's plenty to complain about but there's also some seriously amazing aspects to it.

^so true. The UI counts for so much. As does the I/O - (goodbye SCSI)

Don't forget, it sounds feckin brilliant too!

Looking forward to live sampling and individual sends to those DSI P6 filters too :)

My biggest complaint is the price for product, maybe at $799.00 it wouldn't be as bad

I think it is overpriced but only slightly so. I'd say there is a bit of a cut going to DSI for their filter, plus the screen, plus a very solid build and quality components.

The only comparable product out there is the Octatrack which destroys the Toraiz from a feature standpoint but the actual hardware isn't even in the same league as the Toraiz. The Octa is priced $200 less. I think the Toraiz would be fairly priced as is at about $1299. If they keep adding features, it will easily be worth its asking price.

Yep,i think i would be worth it if they fix the 32 sample limit(probably not happening) and a on the fly sampling among a few other things
