why is rekordbox still so terrible in 2018

I am on Windows7 with a non Pioneer mixer and XDJ700's and TT's with DVS

well i've been using rekordbox pretty much since it came out on many different computers  and it doesn't ever work very well and everybody I know has the same sentiment

if you can offer me some tips on how to get it to work more reliably and faster I'd love to hear! 

i'm talking about it only as an organizing tool and for exporting to USBs, not for DJing itself with controller hardware or something like that 

@Oren > I've been using rekordbox since it was called DJ Booth (lol), and in all honestly, I've had it crash fewer times than any other DJ software. It's pretty stable, has some amazing and unique features (like MyTag, related tracks, integrated lighting), and is less complicated to use than some other software (like Traktor -- look at their settings menu and tell me THAT isn't a whole heap of options).

I can't offer general tips as they might not apply to you, specifically.

If you're ONLY using it to organize music, then you really can't compare it to other software. No other DJ software does what rekordbox does for management and export.

I have to disagree on all 4 points.

It isn't slow. Does it start slow, yes but so does Traktor.

Cluttered, no. When you open a lot of things it can fill you screen up. Same thing happening in Traktor. 

Overcomplicated, definitely not. Though you have to look where some settings are, it's pretty clear what each does. 

Unstable, not for me. 

Which raises a few questions for me.

What kind of computer (specs) are you using? How clean is the computer you're running it on (think low storage, no adware, browser with dozens of add-ons running in the background, limited number of background services running)

What is the speed of your USB stick?

How large is your music library?

Which DJ software have you been trying out and compared Rekordbox side by side with?

Bought Rekordbox last year, Its been getting better and better, Yes its slow to start but its making sure all the files are there, the database is brilliant compared to serato which I started out with, It has not crashed though there is some pointer stroke that seems to remove some files from Libaray, Bought the DMX module its disappointing aside from the fact its bundled with a license which i all ready have, half of the features of the lights are not there.  i7 16 Gb ram, 2 Tb SSD hard Disk

guys, I'm happy to hear you don't have problems but it runs terribly for me and nearly everybody I know personally has the same experience.

I have a max'ed out 2017 macbook pro with an SSD.

Music library is about 20gb.

USB is 3.0

I haven't used traktor or serato in a long time but those programs seemed to work great, very responsive and stable. I use Swinsian as my personal music library and that program works great too.

I do music production with big sessions all day on this computer and that works fine.

Maybe it runs better on windows ?

Let's be honest, its one of the worst softwares when it comes to managing our libraries still. If it wasn't because I need it for creating Playlists for the CDJs, It would probably be my last choice. I have to say I would go back to Serato.

Right now what is completely messing up my files is the fact that I had to change my Hard Drive's name and now all the tidy folder hierarchies that I've built are an issue for a software that doesn't seem to manage hierarchy properly. Meaning, I want to tell Rekordbox to go find everything on my master folder (that has subfolders) but no... I have to go one by one. This is an easy fix for you guys... and something that every basic software has.

Is there a way to do this faster? And if there isn't at the moment, can you look into adding it to the road-map, please?

I have been using rekordbox for the last three years its come on leaps and bounds in the last 15 months, I have a i7 32 Gb of ram and a 2 Tb SSD, No performance issues, I use it live mosts night unless I am doing a fixed set on DDJs in a club, Serato could not index my music collection and store it RB does and no issues, It used to take a while to start but they seem to have resolved this on a update 6 months ago, I have dropped new tunes into the box and giged at the same time while it analyses the tracks no issues no dropouts, I use it with DDJ-SX and DDJ-1000 it runs no issue, I also run it with cdj 2000 nexus decks again no issue though I have to use DDJ-XP1 to quickly access the effects and hot cues I have built up on the DDJ-1000,  When using controllers I use a RME ADI-2 Pro FS DAC as I feel there is better audio quality than the inbuilt audio also I like the Ability to Run AES for certain events. The only let down is the DMX controller while the build of the box is typical pioneer the software aspect leave a lot to be desired so have not transitioned to it as not been able to set a scan area of moving heads and not being able to change gobos or even take manual control is a deal breaker, Serato has a better solution but I use pioneer, to say the software sucks is a big statement to use, The Libary management is far superior to Serato,  Sadly though it does not import cue points from Music Pools and It does not use the Data from Mixed in Key either. One feature I would love on RB is the ability to tag files for Deletion from the drive as well 

After using Rekordbox for about 2 years I must say it works quite well. Next to Rekordbox I also use Serato DJ Pro, and no big differences in quality or stability there.

The only thing what is still an issue, is analysing the correct beat grid. This is still not 100% perfect in Rekordbox. And to be honest, I also experience slight wrong beat grids in Serato too.

On top of this I find it interesting that a lot of DJ's, and even more professional DJ's, use the Mixed In Key software to get reliable analysed tracks with correct key values. Why is it, that DJ software like Rekordbox is not addapting this way of better/professional track analysing? Rekordbox realy could make the difference there, when they upgrade their track analysing to the quality level of Mixed In Key, together with a more reliable beat grid analysing. 

yeah rekordbox is the worst piece of shit... I went to bed last night analyzing around 4600 tracks. When I woke up it's still at 4200... I give up... 

I can't understand how backwards Pioneer made everyting... why is not the analyzing function of rekordbox built in the players? Why do I need to install windows (or macos) to get my tracks analysed? For a setup costing well over 5000 euros!

Why did you not include FLAC support from the first version of the 2000 players? 

Why are you still only using FAT32 (AND HFS) when even windows have moved further since?

How come Denon can do it right and Pioneer can't?

Personally I think it’s a bit to simple, to say that Rekordbox sucks. And on the other hand, as a consumer you are free to choose any DJ soft- and hardware you prefer. So, if you think Denon does the job better, than sell all your Pioneer DJ software and gear, and switch. More people did, and Denon is not bad at all.

I do agree that Rekordbox is not perfect, and the lack of cooperation with Mixed in Key is also an issue for many, but things can change. The same for beat grid analyzing, it’s not perfect, but at this moment not any other DJ software is capable in doing this perfect.

I also use Serato now and then, but to be honest I find Rekordbox sometimes more user friendly, and a lot more mature in it’s file mapping system.

When experiencing problems with Rekordbox, ofcourse it can be a software problem, and then you should request Pioneer DJ for support. But often it’s a user, hardware, or wrong settings problem. And there fore I think one should investigate first, and when the problem is found, and it’s for sure a Rekordbox problem, then feel free to complain in public. And Rekordbox will pick up this issue for sure, to improve their software.

The only thing I think Rekordbox must improve, is listening to their customers more. Like the cooperation with MiK, Rekordbox still lacks in, and also refuses to listen to the many well willing offers MiK made. Pioneer DJ has is the standard in DJ booths, like the Technics SL1200 was, and still is a bit. And therefore Pioneer DJ could think they can’t be beaten, but l assume that this is n’t the issue.

Maybe Pulse can add some inside information about Pioneer DJ’s filosofy for the future. 

I love my old CDJ1000s and DJM800. They work great for normal cds.. I don't understand how they could make the CDJ2000s (not to mention the XDJ players) which cost twice as much and while focusing on using USB devices, dependent on a computer running rekordbox to analyse the music. I mean they still can analyse waveforms off the CDs right? Why not from compressed files? This sucks... it is just bad programming really. 

@Oskar > Thanks for your feedback, although possibly over-negative due to a bug we've found in track analysis. Please try downgrading to 5.8.0 or test the 5.8.2beta.

Hi Pulse,

Doing quite some new track analyzing my self too the last days, I found some tracks which were analyzed in to slow wrong tempo. I’ve changed the analyzing bmp range, and that did the trick.

And to bad you can’t provide any future information about RB, even in this time of the year where “giving away” is mandatory. ;-) For the time being I will stick to the thoughts and hope, that Pioneer DJ is not completely deaf for it’s customers.

Ps. When can we expect RB 5.8.2 beta to be released as official update?

5.8.2 was actually slated for release on Dec. 25 but they found an issue and wanted to run it as a public beta first.
