You could, but as you note - you'd need to purchase rekordbox dj to enter performance mode. Have you tried the 30 day free trial?

XDJ-R1 Rekordbox MIDI
Hi Guys,
I still have an issue; i want to use my R1 with rekordbox on my mac. So i can do the searching and see the soundwaves on my computer. But, my controller doesnt respond to any command, only the master volume works. so no cue, jog wheel, etc etc etc. I already have it on PC mode in utility. I know have the free version of rekordbox, but before i buy Rekordbox DJ, i want to know for sure i can use my laptop and controller, without losing all the functionalities of my controller...
Help me out?!
