Pioneer DDJ-1000 - sensitive gain knobs

Since I bought the DDJ I noticed the gain knobs have a very small usable range (highlighted in the attached picture).

Basically if I move it more than 5mm each away from where they are in the image, they either cut out the sound or boost it too much and the meter goes in yellow/orange.

Is this intended or am I doing something wrong?
