USB Ejection Issues

Hi,
I've been having ejection issues with Rekordbox on a variety of drives on two different computers over the past few years, and it pops up in a handful of ways. Most common is that the dialogue box appears telling me the drive was ejected improperly and the database may have been damaged... when I haven't touched it. Most of the time, the drive will still be readable in the left side folder area and visible on the desktop. I'll still be working on it. There's no reason to be getting this message. Sometimes it pops up again within 5 or 10 seconds. And other times, it actually ejects the disk... telling me it was pulled out when I haven't touched it.

Other times, I'll attempt to eject the disk and it tells me it can't because it's being used by another program... when it's not. All subsequent attempts fail in the same way and I'm forced to shut down Rekordbox to eject the drive. When a drive is full, these problems are exponential. Rekordbox will not recognize the disk, it'll take 10 minutes, it'll freeze, all of the above. It'll take a day to upload a handful of tracks and then will freeze if you stop the sync. Force quit is the only option in most of these cases. I get bigger drives now to avoid this problem but then we run into the 1000 playlist limit and I can't afford multiple terabyte hard drives for each division of my library. And the big drives still get the improper ejection message anyway.

And then there are times when Rekordbox ejects the drive with no problems, and then once you pull it out it tells you it was ejected improperly. When any of these situations arise, Rekordbox will then struggle to read the drive when I put it back in. I've had to run first aid on my drives countless times. And what's WORSE, I discovered, that if Rekordbox ejects the drive during a sync, then all of MyTags get erased. I put 500 hours into tagging my library and lost it all when that happened. And since then (about a year and a half ago), this has happened 3 times. All when I've never touched the drive.

What I know is that regardless of the drive or the computer, these problems have been consistent. I've lost countless hours of work numerous times. I can't use MyTags anymore and Rekordbox doesn't allow me to export more than 1000 playlists. So I'm stuck with this problem and I don't know do about it. Please advise.

Sounds like a drive issue; what's the make / model drive(s) you used?

I just bought a 1TB Samsung 860Evo, referred by another DJ friend who's had zero issues with his. But for me, this drive gets the dialogue box saying it hasn't been ejected properly, even while remaining visible in the left-side folder column. So far, no other issues on this particular drive. But it is also only about 30% full at this point (albeit maxed on playlists).

I've used the 128G PNY 3.0, the SanDisk Ultrafit 3.1, and the SanDisk Cruzer 2.0 and have consistently gotten problems with the computer reading, ejecting, syncing, and freezing on all drives, particularly once the drives are loaded up. Fewer problems if they are empty. None of these drives have problems ejecting from the desktop or being read by Finder when Rekordbox is not in use, regardless of size. It's only when interfacing with Rekordbox that there are any problems. Sometimes Rekordbox will even freeze during launch if any of these drives are full and plugged in. Finder consistently reads them with no issues.

If it really were a drive issue, it could only be because Rekordbox only works with certain drives, and they need to be empty. Seems deeply impractical. And unfortunately without information up front about what drives Rekordbox can handle and what it obviously can't, it would be up to the user to commit to a several year process of trial and error, and even then... no guarantee. The 1TB Samsung I just bought works with no issue for friends of mine who use Rekordbox. And I did a lot of research about this after years of awful problems - I go with what consistently works for others. So if it's the drive... I'm left to believe it's only the drives that I buy, because other people aren't having these problems. And that just doesn't add up. There must be some other issue. I'm down to explore whether my USB ports are defunct, but this has happened on multiple computers and as I said, Finder consistently has no problems on these drives or on any others. It all seems to be isolated to Rekordbox specifically.

The "drive not properly ejected" warning is from the OS. You'll typically only see that pop up on its own if your drive, cable, or port are malfunctioning, it wouldn't be indicative of the app kicking the drive out because that handshake is done through the OS itself. To put this another way, rekordbox itself doesn't unexpectedly unmount a drive (and to my memory, nobody has ever reported an issue that would match this description); at worst, a user will try and eject a drive from the finder but the OS warns that rekordbox is still using it, so it needs to be ejected from there or rekordbox closed first.

Apart from the EVO, the other drives mentioned aren't exactly what I'd consider "performance" drives, but that would only mean their read speeds could be the bottleneck causing slow launching of rekordbox if it's trying to read data from them, or if you possibly have the auto-sync enabled. What is it you have on those drives? Export data only?

I would certainly point to your computer(s) as having problems with the USB. It's possible that you have a common issue on multiple computers due to another device you've connected to them. This is 100% speculation as I'm not sure if it's even possible, but what if device X was causing a short in the USB chipset and any device used after can potentially disconnect at random?

Your best bet would be to take a drive you KNOW isn't working properly on your computer then go to a friend's computer where they don't have this problem and test your drive there,

I'm having the same issue, 9 times out of 10 during a recorded mix, my drive stays connected for ages when doing other stuff yet this only happens when using Rekordbox so this has to be connected, getting annoying now. I can still access and read the drive via finder after this message comes up so can't be an os issue, very odd. Not sure how but there appears to be a conflict there somewhwere. Just bought a usb stick to try rather than the main drive I have my latest tunes on to experiment with. Can't work out why I can read etc the drive via finder after this message pops up. I can't record any mixes until this has been resolved, which is very annoying. Got to work out how to add a playlist onto a stick now without the main drive being attached, don't really like playlists, like to go with the flow but if this helps then so be it, a rigid format it will be. The drive has been connected and readable even after I have had to press the "do not sync" button that pops up once rekorbox has started, not removed the drive and still readable long after

If you eject the drive within rekordbox, it will be removable. If you quit rekordbox, it would release the drive from use, allowing you to eject it from the Finder.

I do not understand your answer. Whilst using the DDJ 1000 and Rekordbox a message will apear saying the device has ejected or something along those lines but it is still connected to finder and I am able to read and access it so therefor it has not ejected, it is only Rekrodbox that is saying this, if I close Rekordbox and reopen it without touching the usb device it is fine so therfor the device has not ejected. Sorry perhaps I did not make that clear earlier. I am aware of how to eject a device from Rekordbox. I cannot make any recordings for fear of the program suddenly stopping being connected to the device, the computer etc is still connected to the device so therefor by process of elimination it has to be rokordbox as the device has not physically been ejected from te computer. I hope this has become a little clearer. I may get away with it from time to time but it happens quite often and always in the middle of a mix. There must be some kind of message it is sending to the computer because you cannot eject a drive when you close rekordbox for a period of time because it is still in use by rekordbox so it must be communicating with the computer, logically I think this is where some kind of corruption may be, I have no idea just trying to logically think of something.

@Daniel > If your drive has a power or connection issue, rekordbox may detect that is has disconnected, even if the Finder appears to have re-mounted it.

I'd suspect the problem is your drive and you should certainly have it checked for errors, or create a backup.

what is odd is that I tried turning off rekordbox and restarting it but in the meantme I thought I would take the drive out and reconnect it but could not as it said rekordbox is still using it so i just restarted and it was fine so the drive was not removed I dont have this issue with anything else when I use the drive. I am going to place the drive in the second cady where the dvd drive was and see if this solves the issue, otherwise I cant use it becaseu I cant trust it. Sometimes I can do a 3 hour mix other times half an hour jst depends, on what I have no idea

Rekordbox won't let me eject, i have a popup that another software is using the usb drive. The only software open is rekordbox. I tried to close & eject from finder but it still doesn't release it. I've only had this problem since my new computer forced me to upgrade to new Rekordbox. This is beyond annoying not to mention my previously bought Rekordbox upgrade is not valid anymore since I had to do the upgrade.

You may have the rekordbox agent running in the task bar; try quitting that first.
