DDJ1000 & Big Sur Success Story

Pioneerians,

Wow what a journey, firstly thank you to the reps from Pioneer who respond to this forum. You are on the front line of frustration and are copping a lot of flak based on stuff caused out of Pioneer's control. Support is stressful at the best of times let alone during a pandemic with a higher support requirement combined with a hardware manufacturer throwing new security curveballs to adapt to delays are unavoidable. We are all in the ship together and yelling wont ever change the seas or the wind.

As I'm guessing most reading this have attempted an install previously, either way you will need the LATEST Big Sur DDJ1000 driver available here: https://www.pioneerdj.com/en/support/software/controller/ddj-1000/#drivers .

If you have not tried to install the driver before please skip ahead to step #6.

Start here if you’ve got this error: com.apple.BootPolicy.updateTagError error 11

Clean driver Uninstall

#1 - Unplug the DDJ1000 USB from the mac.

#2 - Go to Applications / Utilities and open the Terminal app.

#3 - In Terminal type the following: sudo kextcache --clear-staging

#4 - Enter your password and push Enter, then close Terminal

#5 - Open the DDJ1000 driver .dmg and run the Uninstaller

#6 - Reboot (Because who knows what you been doing, just do it)

#7 - Update Mac OSX to 11.2 or higher if available, it will reboot itself.

#8 - Open System Preferences and go to the File Vault tab.

#9 - Turn file encryption for your drive off, no complaints, just turn it off.

PLEASE NOTE: The M1 and Intel process will be slightly different from here.

#10 - Next you will need to know how to boot your mac into recovery mode. The new M1 macbooks pro require holding down the power button on boot, while the older mac use Command & R being held down on boot until it says Recovery mode. If unsure search or try holding Option on boot and select the Recovery Drive to boot from.

#11 - Once the mac is booted into Recovery mode, click Options and then click Continue and enter your password to access the Recovery mode that should look something like this. https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT201314

#12 - From the top menu bar select the Utilities option then select the Startup Security Utility and then select the Security Policy... https://iboysoft.com/howto/enable-system-extension-m1-mac.html

#13 - In the Security Policy for "your harddrive name" tab you need to select Reduced Security and Check the Allow user management of kernal extensions from identified developers and then click OK.

#14 - Close window and select Restart

#15 - DO NOT plug in that DDJ1000 USB yet. If you have it might be fine, but if it's not back to Step #1 with you, you naughty, have fun cya back here soon.

#16 - Open the latest driver downloaded before we started and yes, we can now run the DDJ1000 Installer, get ready for a Security window to popup and DO NOT CLICK OK, keep it simple and click the OPEN SECURITY PREFERENCES, if you do click OK just go to System Preferences then click the Security & Privacy tab.

#17 - Click the Padlock in the bottom left of the Security & Privacy tab and enter your password. If you did good it should have a driver waiting to authorise in the bottom right click Allow and you can almost start dancing, if not u fukd up, initiate crying / screaming whatever helps and back to Step #1 with you soldier, been there, I feel ya, cya again soon, otherwise.

#18 – Reboot!

#19 - It is NOW ok to plug in the USB and then power up your DDJ1000, start your favourite software and check the driver section shows the DDJ1000 available then setup the audio as you require.

#20 - THIS IS CRITICAL TO THE SURVIVAL OF EVERYTHING! Pour yourself your favourite drink, find your best bangers the neighbours haven't heard and let them know you have fixed your system by smashing out tunes dancing for at least 3 hours minimum to “settle” the driver. If anyone asks don’t turn down the volume just yell back that you are “Settling the audio driver!” but this is really so you can settle yourself after going through the last 20 steps.

#21 - Relax and remember how much Apple dance we have been wading through to get this working and not Pioneer specific issues. Remember to take a second to smile whenever you go to install any driver again and know you do not have to go through this process again until of course you inevitably buy another mac, need to find this thread again after much crying to again to repeat.

Good luck to anyone on my #21 Step program, I sincerely hope this helps anyone who has had trouble with mac security settings, the M1 or with any hardware driver issue that could be related. Mega props to DJ Thess Fischer for being the fire behind finding a solution and getting this shared to the community.

Say hi to your neighbours for me.

P.S. Pioneer support we also need help navigating removing the Mic from the Booth output, we have tried the settings within RekordBox to change this on the controller and confirms this change saved on reboot. However when testing it would appear the Mic is still coming through the Booth outputs.

We have tried loading the DDJ1000 internal utility with by removing the USB and powering up while holding the PLAY/PAUSE and the SHIFT button which loads the utility, but we are unable to move through or select the options in the menu past the Utility page.

Once in the utility how do we navigate through these menus? Unfortunately this doesn’t appear defined in the manual and this is our last step in completing our setup, cheers team. k

K, you are a legend.  Foolishly updated to Big Sur when it first came out, ended up messing computer up trying to get to Catalina back and ended up paying an IT guy for two hours to fix.  Roll on several months and felt now was the time to try again, so all seemed well at fist then getting no driver message on jog wheels, arrrrrr.  Several hours of searching and came across your post.  Followed step step and et voila, it works, cue several drinks and 3 hour set, thank you , thank you

sorry for commenting on this old post but I've been trying to get the ddj1000 drivers working on big sur 11.4 all night and I am slowly giving up...

Regarding these steps: I have a Macbook with an intel chip, so do I just skip the steps 10-14?

thanks in advance! :)
