Resetting RB6 library and starting from scratch... I have a few questions left

Hey rekordbox community,

after struggling & procrastinating for weeks/months, I decided to ask my questions/thoughts all around my library issues here.

Until now, I was using a really weird bridge from Apple Music (fka iTunes) to Rekordbox in order to exclude specific tracks from showing up in RB6 (e. g. DJ sets etc). For that, I created a smart playlist in "Music", which only includes marked tracks. That playlist is synced with RB's Sync Manager every time I open RB. So far - so good.

I'm using iTunes Match as well on my "Music" library which really messed things up for me - around half of the tracks went missing in RB and some have duplicated. I think this was caused by iTunes Match - I can't explain it otherwise.

And this semi-messed-up library got me thinking that I should start over with an empty RB library, without this less then ideal connection mentioned above.

So my question is: is there any way to make Rekordbox work just like iTunes, so it takes care of a file structure (Artist/Album/Tracks) when I drag new music in? Do I have to take care of that manually? The main thing I want to avoid in the future is seeing the (traumatizing) orange exclamation mark in RB - indicating missing files, and consequently losing beatgrid/cues/tags.

Is there a smart, clean way to achieve this? How do you guys manage your library (without using iTunes/Apple Music)? It just needs to be as simple and future proof as possible, maybe I missed a very simple obvious way.

And I'm keen to know: Am I the only weirdo that connected their libraries like that and got frustrated?

Thanks so much for your input, I really appreciate it!

Yes, it's most likely that the "match" function ruined your library in Music / iTunes (I'll call it iTunes for simplicity), but it could also be due to a couple of simple check-boxes in the preferences... one which allows iTunes to manage your files, and another which copies the music to the Music folder when you import music to iTunes. Those two simple boxes can destroy a collection without any effort.

My suggestion is don't use iTunes. I personally use it to facilitate the transfer of music to my iPhone, but that's it. Everything else in my rekordbox collection is added directly there, with the music being managed on my hard drive myself. I use a series of folders to organize it by source and date. All the rest of the sorting and management is done within rekordbox.

I've done away with the archaic Artist / Album / Track structure within the software, that is only important if I want to browse the songs on my drive in that manner, and is still available in rekordbox should I choose, but I don't make any effort to do that with songs downloaded digitally from other sources (like Beatport).

Spend the time sorting your music properly before it ever gets to software and you're set up for success.
