CDJ. 3000 Beat Jump Glitch

Three CDJ 3000 all have the same issue with the latest firmware.

When you use the on screen beat jump as you get to about half way into the track it no longer jumps the beats when you click the screen. Sometimes I have to click the screen 3 or 4 times before it responds.

The song has two buffers; one, the "rapid buffer" is for being able to handle subsequent beat jumps and other functions like hot cues, scratching, etc. The other is the "long buffer" which stores the entire track in the event your link or USB drive fails, it can play out.

I was able to watch the video, and I can confirm exactly what's happening - you're outrunning the rapid buffer, if you tap slightly slower, you'll see it's able to catch up and then load the audio around and forward of that position to be able to handle any other actions.

Sorry I can't watch the video (currently on mobile), but are you possibly outrunning the buffer?

What's the buffer? I'm not sure. I would think with the latest gear from Pioneer I could load an analyzed track and beat jump as needed, the behavior I'm experiencing buffer or not is not good.

Thank you for the explanation on the buffer. While that makes perfect sense I'm still not sure about something and maybe you can clarify.

If I load a new track and I move to the middle of the track by clicking the bottom waveform on the CDJ is it buffering from the start of the track? The reason I ask is if I do this no matter what when I click the beat jump it's not responsive even if I'm beat jumping backwards etc. While I understand how the buffer is an issue if I'm beat jumping 384 beats from the start but not if I jumped directly further into a track. Shouldn't it buffer ? amount of beats from that point with no delay?

When you jump to the middle of the track with needle search, it takes a moment to then buffer audio back and forward from the new playhead position if that point you chose was beyond the "rapid buffer" section.

I would of thought that this would of been instant tbh. $2500 for each player and we need to wait for a buffer, even with a super fast USB. 

With Serato, you load a track and its all there. You can beat jump in jumps of 32 beats the whole way to the end of a song literally faster than you can press the buttons.

Moving to using rekordbox analized usbs in the clubs instead of serato has been brilliant in a lot of ways, but I've learnt I need to slow down a lot

That may be, but this is hardware which is having to load a heap of data to memory on a dedicated machine - your computer is not a CDJ. You also won't find a CDJ sending emails or playing flight simulators.

Thats true but I could go buy a new macbook air m1 for less than half the price of a single cdj that could run Serato flawlessly, send emails and play flight sim in parallels. Pioneer need to up their game IMO. Yes its 'hardware' but its just CPUs, RAM and code at the end of the day.

I dont wanna sound too negative cos I really love pioneer stuff and the work flow on the whole. But there definitely are some things that bug me. Theres things that bug me about Serato also

Pulse, what kind of fast buffer are you talking about? The CDJ-3000 has 2GB of RAM, which is equally fast for all buffers. Pioneer Dj also claims full track buffering (like Denon). Or is the CDJ-3000 not buffering the full of the uncompressed audio data? CDJ only creates a copy of the file from the flash drive in RAM, but does not store its uncompressed version in its entirety? Does this mean that if the track is wav, the beat jump will be faster? After all, there will be no loss of time for decoding, when moving from buffer to buffer.

@Greeb > The entire song is buffered, but that's not needed for the active playback memory space; it doesn't load the 5th or 6th minutes of audio into the "fast buffer" because it doesn't need to worry about whether or not that audio will need rapid response. Only the audio surrounding the current play point (plus a maximum number of beats fwd/back for beat jump) and hot cues are loaded to the "fast buffer" which is refreshed any time an action is taken to move the current play position.

I think this is ridiculous.  The machine needs to be able to handle subsequent beat jumps.  This "rapid buffer" response is laughable really, especially given the hype of the powerful cpu etc....

Almost as ridiculous as the reason for not being able to rate a track due to "database complexities".
