Duplicate Files

Hi, Recently Dropbox requested an updated and now it created two copies of my song files in my DJ software. There seems to be a replica location for all my files called /Library/CloudStorage, in addition to the normal location(see attached screenshots) . Dropbox support insist that the problem is caused by the DJ software Rekordbox. I'm using MacOS 12.6.2. Please help!

I'm not sure why Dropbox would have moved the files, have you looked at the physical location of the files on your drive?

Problem is I still find 2 copies of most songs in my ‘Collection’ (see attached screenshot-1).

And when I click on them in Rekordbox, it shows that they’re in different locations (screenshots-2&3)

And when I right click on each to ‘Show In Finder’ (screenshos-4).

They’re both in the same location (screenshots-5&6).

This would conclude that Rekorbox has duplicated the files with the new location path?

I might've Cleared and Reloaded some Playlists when Dropbox recently moved to CloudStorage (https://help.dropbox.com/installs/macos-faqs) and it didn't seem to get cleared in the 'Collection'.

Question is how do I get rid of these double-ups, without having to go into my collection and delete each song individually? I have over 10K tracks. Please help!

Hi Pulse,

It's correct what he is saying. Recently Dropbox has updated their app because MacOS doesn't support customising the Dropbox folder anymore. So after installing the update, all files are moved to ~/Library/CloudStorage (which is a hidden folder in your user profile I assume).  So every third-party software, including Rekordbox, should update the link to there used files.

Now I've seen the Dropbox update has created a "folder alias" in my user profile, named "Dropbox" (as that was the formerly original folder) but that's just a redirect to ~/Library/CloudStorage.

I fixed this by renaming the "alias" he created from "Dropbox" to "Dropbox-old". Then in Rekordbox, I did "find missing files" and it all redirected them to ~/Library/CloudStorage.  So far, so fine.

HOWEVER... if you go into Rekordbox, and want to add new tracks from your "new" Dropbox location, I don't seem to find how to get there using the "correct" file folder (not by reaching it from an alias folder, which is only a temporary solution, because RB imports it with the "alias name" and not the new folder location).  So please tell me how to reach "~/Library/CloudStorage" from Rekordbox > Explorer > Macintosh HD > Users > "userprofile" > ... and then??? This "Library" folder is not visible.  So as from now on, I'm not able to add new tracks to my collection :-)

See full changelog of Dropbox on this URL: https://help.dropbox.com/en-us/installs/macos-faqs

Nice weekend! Christophe

@hongstar ... if you are really sure u have everything double, ... try to do the same as above, rename the dropbox-alias-folder to something like "dropbox-old", then do "find missing files" and if you really really really sure you have them all double, then just choose delete over there. Please make a backup first of your collection :-)

Good luck. CP.

Pulse...

Add-on to my question. Found a solution to import tracks from the new dropbox location => RB menu > file > import track/folder

Cheers!

Here's the problem with Rekordbox as a third party application from the Dropbox migration:

Since the Dropbox MacOS migration (https://help.dropbox.com/installs/macos-faq), Rekordbox is reading the new location as new files.

So, when I drag to reload a Playlist with the exact same files from the exact same folder location, usually Rekordboz will ask whether if “you would like to add duplicates or skip them?”. And I choose ‘skip’ it will just add new files.

But in this case, it adds the same files and doesn’t recognise duplicates for whatever reason - perhaps due to the move from Dropbox to a new hidden location.

Even if I delete the files from the Playlist and reload them, the copy is still in Redkorbox’s ‘Collection’. Unless I choose the option to ‘Remove from Collection’, there will be two copies.

I was told by Dropbox Support that since the migration, there is a shortcut from the old location to the new one, so existing apps could still technically refer to the old location, which redirects it to the new CloudStorage folder.

It's possible that Rekordbox might not follow the redirect correctly, or understand that there are two folders. They suggest that I could try removing the shortcut from the 'Users' folder to prevent this . And this won't affect my files, since they're already in the correct, new location. I'll still need to remove the duplicate files from Rekordbox, however.

This solves the problem.

Yes precisely... that's what I did. I removed the "shortcut" and then go to Rekordbox and find missing files (those will be the ones in the "old" dropbox location). Since you have them double (new location + old location) you can then just delete all the missing files.

If you update to rekordbox 6.6.9 (or 6.6.10) this isn't a concern as rekordbox now uses the API.
