DJM 900 + cdj 2000 = Ethernet Switch.....

@Christoffer Földes > Congrats on the gear mate, you're gonna love it! Yes you should connect your CDJ-2000's and your DJM-900 to get the most out of the setup. This enables playing with Rekordbox from your computer, playing multiple CDJ's from 1 USB device or SD card, and quantized effects. 

The straight forward reason as to why you need a switch is because there isn't enough ports on the DJM-900. ;) lol But there is not a lot of room available on the DJM-900 as it is and couldn't fit another 3 LAN ports properly, let alone it being costly and would have increased the price of the mixer.

That being said, I use the D-LINK DES-1008e (8-port) switch which is appealing to the eye, wasn't very pricy, and works perfect for me. D-Link also makes a DES-1005e (5-port) switch which is less costly and works just as well.

In all honesty, it's really only 2 more cables added to the set. And you can use digital cables from your 2000's to your 900 which cleans up all the RCA cables. I like the digital inputs and outputs! But if you decide to get some digital cables, make sure they are 75ohm for best quality.

Thanks a lot for the help! What I see the good things with have everything linked is that players get the on air status and also the quantized effects that seems to be one of the big things with the 900 mixer or am I right?

@Christoffer > Yes the "On Air" status is a great feature, and the "Quantize" is awesome! It's best when you play Rekordbox analyzed files on the CDJ's because the waveform comes up immediately, and all the data sent to the mixer is perfectly in tempo all the time. Just play a track from a USB device or over the Link using Rekordbox and play with the tempo and you will see the DJM-900's BPM counter stay perfectly in beat with the CDJ.

Give Rekordbox a try if you want your CDJ's to perform faster as well. Rekordbox helps utilize the capabilities of these players and mixer even more!

I like the Gear and of course do I use Rekordbox....

So if I get a Ethernet switch how would everything be conected then?

For the moment I am thinking about if the 2000 mixer would be a better choice but I and most others love the lay out on the 900...

1. Power to each unit, your computer, and your ethernet switch. (duh, I know. lol)
   
2. Either RCA cables or Digital cables from your CDJ-2000's to your DJM-900 for audio.
   
3. Ethernet cables from each CDJ-2000, your DJM-900, and your computer connecting to your switch.
   
4. Ensure the switch has no management software on it, and you should disable your firewalls and wifi on your computer when using Rekordbox with the gear, or updating the DJM-900.
   
5. Ensure "On Air Display" is turned on in the CDJ-2000's settings, and ensure each CDJ-2000 player No. is listed as the channel you decided to input to. i.e. if you plug the left CDJ-2000 into channel 1, make sure the CDJ-2000 is listed as player No. 1 in settings, and if the right player is plugged into channel 4, make sure that CDJ-2000 is listed as player No. 4.
   

That's a hard call to make, the DJM-900 and DJM-2000 are 2 totally insane mixers! It's really your personal preference and what you're use to! The DJM-900 has the X-Pad which is great and totally fun to use with effects, and it has the 6 color effects which have both high pass and low pass control. The DJM-2000 is a different layout for effects and such, but it has the 5.6" full colour touch screen display which gives you MIDI functions, live sampler, and a 7-frequency touch control cross fader. The DJM-2000 also has 6 INST FX which are like the color effects on the DJM-900, but require 2 controls for the level and the parameter. Yes the DJM-2000 has the 6 ethernet ports on the back, but don't make that a deciding factor over it! The price difference between the DJM-2000 and DJM-900 is well above the price of an ethernet switch. You can buy a 5-port ethernet switch for around $15-$25, and an 8-port switch for $25-$45 in NA. I got my 8-port really cheap because they did a price match guarantee and I saved over $20.

It's really your call, but if you really want to go for the DJM-2000, you should test it out at a nearby dealer to get the hang of the differences and see if you might actually prefer the DJM-900.

Just to add in, I prefer the DJM-900 color effects because you have control over the high pass and low pass on each channel, making it easier to transition with the effects here and there, but the DJM-2000 you either pick a constant high pass or low pass and it is the same on every channel. And I feel since the DJM-900 only takes 1 knob to control a channels color effect, that allows me to have my other hand free to use for something else. But with the DJM-2000, I would kinda feel like I need both hands on the effect to get what I want out of it, so it would leave me tied up directly with that single effect on one channel unfortunately. You don't have to do that, but that's the way I would feel for a while until I got use to trying it with just 1 hand.

Think about all the details, your mixing style, and your music selection. Hopefully it should help determine what would be best for you and the way you DJ.

Hi I already Bought a djm 900 and I have tested 2000 to.

I just think it is a little bit sad that the 900 dont got that ethernet connections when it is a flagship mixer.

Actually i dont think it is that much more than the 800 mixer but i think i will enjoy more and more.

And it was more expensive for me with the 900 than 2000 mixer...

But the classic layout that 900 got is better....

Thats true but it could really have 2.... If you got 2 connections you could have 2 players on it and for me it would be great i dont use computer i use usb device.

So If I understand everything right:

1. From the 900 mixers ethernet connection to an ethernet switch.

2. On the Ethernet Switch you Connect the Players?

3. And if i want to use The computer and recordbox, do I connect the computer to the ethernet switch? why not to one of the playes?

@Christoffer > Unfortunately 2 isn't really useful because most club set-ups would contain more than 2 CDJ-2000's or CDJ-900's, and would need to give DJ's the ability to use their computer as well. Unfortunately it's not useful for the masses.

As for your questions on set-up:

1. DJM-900 to Ethernet switch - Yes
   
2. Both CDJ's via ethernet to ethernet switch - Yes
   
3. Computer connect via ethernet to ethernet switch - Yes
   

The computer needs to be connected to the ethernet switch to enable access over both CDJ's and the DJM-900. If you plugged your computer via ethernet directly into your CDJ, you would only have Rekordbox ability on the one CDJ. ;) You need the switch so everything can connect to each other and work together in harmony. :)

Now it works perfect in harmony. I bought a cheap d link switch.

So it wasn't that much trouble but stillI don't se why pioneer make a mixer and tell the users to buy a commercially available switch...

might be a silly question, but I've just bought a 900 nexus and have 2 CDJ 2000's and am about to buy a switching hub, does the hub have to be linked to a PC for this to work ? 

No Thomas! One cable to cdj 1 and one to cdj 2 and then one to the hub.. (CDJ 1 and 2 is of course your CDJ 2000:s)

brilliant! thanks! as I mainly play of SD/USB's so see no need to link to my PC but would still like the CDJ's & Mixer to be linked to make use of the quantized beat effects :)

Wicked, thanks guys, it was just every diagram I found had a laptop linked up made me think you had to have one linked for it to work!

Maybe another silly question but what's the difference if you link a computer to the network via Ethernet opposed to linking the computer straight to the mixer using the USB?
