What Mixer to use??

Hey All,

I am looking to purchase the CDJ-900's and am looking at dual decks...

I am wondering if anyone has any ideas on what mixer would best compliment these..

Any help be greatly appreciated...

@Sam > Just a few questions to get some idea of what might suit you best ...

Are you just starting out?

Are you looking to use more than two channels?

What about software -- are you possibly going to venture down the avenue of controlling the software with your players/mixer?

Do you have any interest in recording your mixes?

Just my own opinion and from my experince with others who started out. Look into a 4 Channel Mixer. Most people who started out and bedroom DJ'ed normally go for a 2 channel mixer but once they start getting more creative and start using a 4 channel mixer they move onto a 4 channel mixer. Pioneer makes some great 4 channel mixers, Though new might be a lil to much for a bedroom DJ I will suggest to check out Guitarcenter used section or even local Craigslist for a Used Pioneer 4 channel. Price wise this is what you can expect:

*DJM 500 = 250$ - 300$ *

This mixer is great. This has many of the filters that built the Pioneer brand as the club standard.

DJM 600 = 300$ - 500$

The mixer that nailed Pioneer the Crown "Club Standard" Every effect that the DJM 500 has plus more proffesional sounding effects vs is predessesor.

DJM 700 = 600$ - 800$

Can't review this one since I never had one.

DJM 800 = 900$ -1000$

Also never owned this one

DJM900NXS = 1100$ - 1800$ (used and new)

I own this one, OMG this one has everything from its predessesors and more Digital Mixer, Midi Support, Sound Card. Compatible with Traktor Scrtach Pro 2 and Ableton.

Just to clarify on the above post ... the DJM500 does NOT have filters, nor does the DJM600.  I believe what was meant was "effects".

Note that the DJM500 and DJM600 are out of production and you will only find used units on the market, both are also analog mixers whereas all newer models are digital-bus mixers (even if they do not have a digital input).

Also consider the DJM350 and DJM250 if you don't need 4 channels.

@Pulse.. I am just starting out however i have had basic experience and am looking to take my skills commercial once i have mastered my decks.
I have been looking into the DJM 700, DJM 900, & DJM 2000, But given the great price difference between the 3, i am leaning towards the mid, the DJM 900. I have read up on the spec this one entail, and am quite impressed.. Safe bet??

@Sam > Absolutely - the 900nexus is my favourite mixer at the moment and you'll certainly be happy with it for a long time, plus Pioneer mixers hold great residual value.

For me, the 900nexus is my choice because of the soundcard and the size, but there is no "better" if the superior unit doesn't do what you need.  Example: the Porche 911 is a better car than my Toyota Rav4, but I can't put 2 kid seats and all my camping gear in the 911.  ;)

Hi if you hold down one of the beat effects timing buttons eg 1/8 and while pressed turn the time parameter knob and you can skip though lots of different timings.

DJM2000 is plague with issues and no solution has been released to-date.  Check or query this forum.  I would lay off getting this unit for now but if you think it is still 'cool' to have it then by all means - get it.

"plague(d) with issues" ??? On what grounds do you make that statement? The DJM2000 is a fantastic mixer.

Love the DJM2000! Some of the effects are set to loud by default so just turn them down!! I used to have an DJM800 now after playing on the 2000 the 800 feels tiny and cramped.

@Pulse: "plague(d) with issues" ??? On what grounds do you make that statement? The DJM2000 is a fantastic mixer.”

My unit is not being used to its full potential since I bought it. And when I use it, I have to turn down my speakers to avoid blowing it up because of 3 known issues that I know of:

Issue #1: Volume discrepancy in the Instant Instrument FX.  I have reported this in this forum. Search under my name.

Issue #2: Volume discrepancy when using the Side Chain Remix.  Owners of this unit have already reported this in this forum.

Issue #3: Volume discrepancy between LINE and CD/Digital connections.  I have reported this in this forum which according to you was a non-issue and accordingly closed by you.  Search for "DJM-2000 Another Anomaly Found." The report was to point out the potential disaster that awaits the owner if he/she follows exactly how to connect the CDJ, Tape player, and etc. units to the DJM-2000, as laid out in its brochure or manual..  If the DJ accidentally flips the lever from LINE to CD/Digital position during the gig or performance.  The key word is: accidentally.

Until Pioneer releases the fix to these issues, to me, the unit to ceases to be fantastic.

@markoerregger > No, the hardware is incapable of supporting more than 2 inputs and no firmware updates can change that.

@GlasEye2 > The two volume issues have already been reported to engineers but they are manageable by the user.  As for the switching -- no, it's not an issue.  Users typically don't have multiple sources that are connected to one channel all playing at the same time so an accidental switch from one source to another on that channel is not an issue.  If you're concerned, simply move that source to another channel or stop playback of that source during playback of another source on that channel.

@Rose > I'm not sure a DJ mixer would be your best option but then again, I've never had to deal with live vocalists. In any case, any mixer with a mic connection will work.
