[SOLVED] few issues with RMX1000

After being all over the rmx 1000 and gigging on it for a few weeks ive found a few annoying things on it. 

ive been using it with a djm800 and am wondering if anyone else gets these minor faults, im pretty sure you will as it seems like one of those issues that will happen accross the board. 

 

im using it through the fx send/return on the djm800. as soon as you press the fx on button to activate the send/return on the djm the sound changes very slightly, it becomes more muffled and less clear, only a bit and can be noticed more through the headphones, this would really have an impact on me doing an album or mix for release due to sound quality. i wonder if this is only with the djm800 or if its the same with the nexus 900?? ive yet to try it with the sound going direct into the rmx and not using sends but im guessing this way will be ok but would mean having 2 rmx1000's.

there is also another annoying thing going on, when i am mixing 2 tracks and i have the fx of the rmx 1000 going over one track then when i switch the fx channel on the djm800 to the other audio channel there is a weird shift in audio and the perfectly beat matched beats become slightly out of phase and it needs to be pushed back to sync, only a very little but its enough. hopefully firmware may sort this out but i dont know if its a problem with the actual mixers.

 

any other comments would be appreciated if anyone can see if this happens for them too??

Your first issue is something I've noticed in the past with other FX units, the EFX-1000 included, but with the RMX-1000 I'm pleased with the results.  This makes me think that your issue could be down to a few factors...

  • The Send/Return quality of the DJM-800.  Newer models such as the 850, 900 or 2000 might have a better quality Send/Return loop - of this I'm unsure, but it's a possibility.
  • The quality and length of the cables you're using for Send/Return.  Cheaper cables, like basic, 5+ metre long guitar leads will sound shoddy compared to shorter, higher quality patch leads.  I'm not saying to spend hundreds on cables, but £20 (approx $35) in cables is well worth the investment.  Beyond that, since the audio signal is passing through a processor and several interconnects, you have to expect tiny alterations in sound quality.  None that should be truly noticable though.  Sometimes just hitting that FX button on the mixer is enough (especially as you can hear a tiny transition "blip" - just like when you engage a Color FX or Inst FX) to trigger your brain into thinking there's a difference.

The second issue is simple, the audio signal has to travel from the mixer to the RMX, it has to travel around the RMX through various signal processors, and it has to travel back from the RMX to the mixer.  Quite literally the processed audio has to travel a much greater distance, add to that the few milliseconds that will be lost due to the complex operations the signal processors have to carry out on the effected audio, and the result is a very very slight, but totally unavoidable delay.  To minimise, get shorter cables, but that slight delay will always be there.  The only way to avoid it is by putting your RMX onto the Master output (thus losing the ability to send individual channels to the RMX), or by breaking the laws of physics.

ive noticed sound quality drops aswell, im using a djm 2000, at first i thought it was just a slight volume drop, but after adjusting the input/output signal to try and correct it i found i couldnt :/ im using high quality leads, studio grade headphones and fairly respectable studio monitors, so this is very noticable to me,  the sound muffles, and i dont get the crisp sound that i usually get from my setup :(   the way the Rmx is running atm there is no way i can use it in a recording,  or live, the sound levels of the different effects are all over the place, the rmx and my mixer is constantly clipping because some effects are so loud,  while others i can barely hear at all,  maby the sound quality cant be fixed, but at the very least we should have a firmware udate to give us volume controls on every effect.  and maby even a seperate type of volume for when combining effects to stop the mixer/rmx from clipping.

also, some of the effects sound completely awful, spiral up, spiral down, reverb up, reverb down are not so good either, ( the reverb on djm 2000 is way better) if someone can show me a video of them using spiral effect and it sounding good, ill be very surprised.......  the effect unit has 10 echo based effects,  which i think is too many echos, it would of been better to have a few flanger/phaser/jet type effects for good measure, theres only so many echos i need!  all in all, i am happy with the rmx, just dissapointed in a few areas of it,  but hopefully future updates can sort some of the problems out.

I couldn't agree more!  I'd imagine we'll have to wait for a 'MK2' to see anything like that (along with the other bits 'n' bobs the RMX needs such as the EFX style master wet/dry knob and separate level knob for the X-Pad.

As for the Spiral Up and Reverb Up (but certainly not the 'Down' versions!), I have found use for those.  I might try to make a video, or attempt to explain here.

mark i thought there was a volume for the x pad?? also the scene fx can in most cases be controlled like a wet dry know with the sub parameters. at lease for the fx i use.

im glad other people are having same issues as me, i hope firmware will fix some of these problems at least. 

i couldnt agree more about the amount of delays, im really really happy with the unit but after playing with it for a week i really feel as though it should have gone further in what you can do, its not too much different to the efx1000 in that it has a limit to creativity.  It really makes me wonder what imput and final say people have when they are making there units as there are some quite fundamental elements we have brought up especially the one that it can not be used in an album mix due to the quality of sound as and fx send / return.

For me i would have like to have seen the unit a bit bigger with more attention payed to the roll or may be a flexible sampler on it with much more sample time to be more creative. leaning towards a more hardware type piece of kit allowing for much more creativity. As it stands i use the roll alot but it only takes one bar of a track which is just not enough, you cannot do much with just a bar... i would have much rather payed say £1000 for this for it to be packed with much more armoury. bigger screen with  option to load much more sample data from one sd card. so it seems im still awaiting the perfect creative fx unit!  i love the kills , they are amazing but this is no good when the sound quality on the sends are muffled.  The elements of the mixer are probably more suited to be built on to a mixer rather than a stand alone unit, especially as they called it a rmx unit which it is not really. 

Please pioneer, look at ableton, see what you can do with loops on there and make a machine what can let you do the same but with cdjs and fx. more sample time pleezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

 

sorry for the long essay but we need to talk about these things in the hope that we are listened to to push things, ive been doing this for 24 years now and have always got on anything which is new, have tutorial vids online, including vdj'ing so hope my opinion matters and is noticed.

Amen!   4 beats isnt enough.... is it anyway possible that a firmware update can deliver 8 beat loops??   the rolls is completely ''smothered' by only allowing 4 beats, tonight is my longest session yet on the rmx, with a few mates + drinks (accomplished DJ's) and the sound levels is catastrophic!   i cant be blunt here, the rmx is unuasable at a professional level :( please, please please, engineers, fix the levels,  and sound quality,  and if possible swap the spiral down, and reverb down for and flanger/phaser type effect :O

aaron, the sound level thing can be kept on top of , have you gone through and customized your unit yet, if so do so as you can level off some stuff, other than that its manually controling the sub parameters unfortunatly, its not too hard to do, the worst area of problems with volumes ive found comes with the samples section, when you put samples into remixbox it does not let you normalise samples so when you go to use the samples after loading them from sd the loudness varies greatly  and its quite hit and miss when playing live, i played out last weekend and i found my self putting samples in but some punched in too loud, there needs to be something to keep them all at the same level.

4 beats is a bit of a joke really. im sure fireware can change this. each bank i think can have 16 seconds of samples so i would think that the possibility may be is to be able to have longer loops i hope, you would need at least 4 beats to be able to do anything on and thats bare minimum.

I havent indulged  into the sample section yet, (i plan too during the week)   honestly, i cant keep on top of my levels, i have tried the rmx input/output, the +10/-4db on the back of the rmx. the djm 2000  level depth, the -6/-3/0 on the back  o0f the djm 2000 the gains/master on the djm 2000,     everything on the mixer is at 12 oclock!   the rmx settings are now lower,   it is WAY too loud on the scene effects, the Xpad roll is adjustable with its separate volume, but the low frequency on the trans roll is  inaudible , and the trans is just pure sh1te aswell,   i would like this effects box to be a ''stabb and stopp'' type unit, but on my own personal unit it just isnt possible......

To address the sample lengths...

The RMX sample bank isn't designed as a "sampler", its purpose is to be a drum pad, adding percussion to the tracks rather than long samples or loops.  Each sample is engineered for a 4-beat max and 16 seconds is more than adequate to accommodate the time requirements as that would allow you to have four 4-beat samples set for a 60BPM track.  If you set it up correctly, that would allow you to actually bend the rules and use four 8-beat samples set for a 120BPM track (or faster).

As for the volumes, I've had no problems in setting it up correctly and using it without blasting my ears off.  Have you watched my setup video?

Nice video Pulse!  It also allows me to highlight 2 things that I was about to start a new thread about.  One might be firmware correctable, the other isn't...

1) X-Pad volume.  9 o'clock is indeed a good value to have this set to.  But if you quickly switch to Roll and forget to bring it back up to 12 o'clock, your roll won't have the desired effect.  It's essentially a design issue - the sample bank really needs its own individual level control.

2) Still on the X-Pad, I see you ran your finger across it quickly a few times.  Power up the RMX, and run your finger across the X-Pad from left to right - the pad will follow your finger instantly, with total accuracy.  Now press Overdub and do the same thing.  You'll notice that the pad tracking can't keep up with your movements.  It's not a massive issue, as the necessity to record quick patterns on the pad don't come around that often.  That said however, I don't believe it should behave in this way.

100% agree with everything said. too many echo effects, not enuff alternative phaser/ flanger type effects. come on this should be the greatest stand alone effects unit around.

what processors have we under the hood of this thing?

but it does sample! so why not have it more sample workable. defies logic really

Guys I've just bought an RMX-1000 and I'm still struggling with what types of cables to connect it up with as a send/return on a DJM2000.

I've been out today and bought 4 x 3M TRS cables and I've connected them to the send return TRS jacks on both the RMX unit and the mixer. When used as a send return and the effects button is engaged there is quite a significant delay in the effect being applied from the unit, the quantize timings appear to be out and are not as accurate this way?

Whats the best way to connect them all up with this kit - in addition the RNX-1000 input L/R jacks state mono on the L port, however both stereo on the output. On the DJM2000 both L ports on the input and output are mono??

Any assistance offered would be greatly appreciated.

Hi mark,

I also own a djm 2000 and a rmx.

My rmx is connected with 4 trs cables ( just like you)

The Send from the DJM goes to the input of the rmx

The return from the DJM goes to the output of the rmx

You probably have the rmx connected in the right way..

As for the L ( mono) displayed on the djm and rmx:

I believe that both inputs and outputs are MONO (Left and Right connection)

You create stereo by connecting both the Left and Right.

Try connecting the rmx with only one cable ( L or R)

Then use the balance on the mixer.... you will see that the effect is only apply d on one side ???

 

For the delay:

I do not have any. Is it on all effects ?

The RMX will only be quantized properly if you select the right channel...

You have to select the channel were the music is playing from.

Other then that, I don't know what you could be doing wrong...

I thought it was me on the lack of flanger and phrasing controls on the face.

To the guys with the noise problem, is the usb connected?

I discovered by accident that when disconnected the noise goes away.

Mine was kind of a ground loop like low level hum noise.

All of my levels are at 12 mixer s/r included.
