Key Analysis - Camelot?

I'm sure I won't be the only one requesting this... if at all possible and compatible with the CDJ 2000 Nexus, it would be really cool to have the option of displaying the musical key as it does now when you analyse a song, but also have the option to display the camelot notation instead.

I don't see why it wouldn't be possible (but I completely understand if it's not the engineer's first priority) - it would be analysed all the same, and could be switched back and forth by pressing the button (they just need to program that 1A = A♭m, 2A = E♭m, etc.

Would also be cool that if  this was done, you were able to switch it back and forth as an actual option on the CDJ itself.

The camelot wheel is the intellectual property of Mixed In Key so Pioneer has no rights to use the system freely. Besides, think of the 2000 nexus as doing the camelot system for you as it displays exactly what keys/tracks are compatible which is exactly the purpose of the camelot wheel.

I've got a Camelot wheel on my platter looks great and saves me having to memorise it all.

Some time ago, I've made a suggestion about this, unfortunately not many use keys, so it was ignored. This is the way I'd like RB to work with keys: If for example, the currently playing track is 8A, RB should lightly highlight all directly compatible tracks within the playlist (in this case 7A, 8B and 9A), and optionally highlight in different color tracks that raise/lower energy levels (in this case 1A, 6A, 10A, 3A). Also, right now, to see the key of a playing track, I've been putting the key into the "album" field , because seeing the key display field on the player requires turning its counter-intuitive jog wheel every single time, and there's plenty of room next to the player icons in RB to display the key of the currently playing track. I know this is not first priority, but I don't think it would be a difficult to implement, especially seeing how engineers waste their time on creating smartphone apps for professional DJs.

Pretty sure its not the property of mixed in key, theres lots of other programs that use it too.

Either way I'll continue to use Camelot notation but it's gonna be annoying having that little blue thing at the side in RekordBox telling me none of my songs have been analysed lol

For me the biggest thing is browsing through musical keys from 1A-12A on the decks... although right now they organise it alphabetic which makes it show in the order of 10A, 10B, 11A, 11B, 12A, 12B, 1A, 1B etc. (Doesn't start at 1)

An alternative to having camelot notation would be to be able to sort musical keys in the same sense, without actually using camelot notation (maybe have it go 1A, 1B, 2A, 2B... or 1A-12A then 1B-12B? Something of the likes would be very useful though for sure, instead of when you organise a song by Key having it alphabetical order cuz then it'd be all over the place.

Example for 1A. 1B. 2A. 2B etc, have the order start out  A♭m, B, E♭m, F#, B♭m, D♭

I think we all can admit the Camelot System is much easier- made mixing keys a global standard for DJs over the last few years, if only it could be accessible to all... I know it's saved my sets many times over the years- here's a sample playlist... with MIK you can go not only up/down one step but also 4 up/4down and it works just as well. Sample playlist attached

Just realized - you could easily analyze the key of your whole collection in rekordbox then replace the results with the 12A, 5B..etc if you just google "Camelot Wheel" then replace them in batch on rekordbox-  for example select all your Fm and replace it with 4A... then all your Dm and replace it with 7A... and so on- problem solved! :)

Only annoying thing would be when you add new tunes to do the same procedure for each track- it is a solution though

I was mistaken, I thought the little blue icon in RekordBox meant it hadn't been key analysed, but that was just the waveform

So I don't care too much then, I'm going to continue using Mixed In Key since it writes the key into both the Comments and Key field (1 or the other, or both, adjusted in settings) - but I'm gonna guess if I do this, it won't recognise the key on the CDJ 2000 Nexus and won't give me the traffic light thing - not that I'd need it, using camelot, but I just like to take 100% advantage of all of the features on a deck lol

@T-Top > You could have MiK write the Camelot keys to the comments field tags of your tracks and then analyse in rekordbox to give you that version in the key field. Presto-bango, you have all the data you want to hand - making use of both MiK and the traffic light system etc.

I do have Camelot keys in all my comments actually lol except it's not always visible because some of them have a lot of other comments and it scrolls through them... however now that I'm starting to memorise the camelot circle that might be the way to go indeed

@T-Top > We will, of course, suggest Camelot Notation but this could be difficult / expensive to implement.

I have an issue because I'm bulk changing my keys to camelot after trying the key system for Rekordbox.  Actually a few issues.

  1. The results are nothing like MIK, sooooo who's right?

  2. Aomw results given in Rekordbox are not on the camelot wheel.  (LOL, I'm not a musician, so c#m, D#, D#m, G#m, and Gb, what are they?)  I'm trying a bulk change but I'm stuck with leftovers and I haven't used 1A, 2B, and 12A for camelot, but those do not equal the five leftovers from Rekordbox c#m, D#, D#m, G#m, and Gb.

Any help with this?

I use AIFF files so writing from MIK is not an option.

@ gavin,  that would be helpful :)

Also , where does rekordbox store the KEY tag ? Is it stored in rekordbox only ?

Is there a way the KEY can be read with an TAG editing program like mp3 tag?

Thanks

+1 nice to have but I analyze w/ MiK (double work).  I think seratoDJ licenses camelot as well.  Would be nice to know where rDJ stores their key tag as well.

Any update on this request Pioneer... do not want to cause multiple posts, but adding the Camelot Notation would be a blessing for library management for many that have only ever used keys that way?

If not

  1. Could you add a new column in the library view called Camelot (that could be manually selected and placed by users next to the current 'Key' column)
  2. This new column would show the corresponding "Camelot Key Notation' for a track based on the Standard key notation' that Pioneer generate during track analysis
  3. Should be a simple look up to carry out and could be carried if/when you add the new Camelot column and reload tracks to update

Not ideal, but a workaround that am sure could be implemented without major work on the back end.

I'm doing like this: Just download Traktor 3 demo, analyze only key in Traktor. Save. After that open Rekordbox and disable key analizing. Thats it.
