[SOLVED] Moving Music collection to external drive

Hi,

I use rekordbox to sort my tunes then transfer to USB for playing at gigs.

Im running out of room on the laptop that rekordbox is installed on so bought an external drive with the plan to keep Rekordbox on the laptop and transfer all of my music to the external drive (as a master copy), delete the music from the laptop and plug the external drive in when i want to use Rekordbox and still export to USB for gigs.

How can i transfer all of the music without damaging the Rekordbox file/cue points/labels/playlists.

This may be a dumb question but with 4000 tracks all sorted to my OCD level I really want to get it right the first time without breaking anything. Especially since i play gigs 3 nights a week and work full time in between so dont really have the time to do it all again!

I may be missing something but ive searched around and can only seem to find this  http://forums.pioneerdj.com/entries/20658308-Migrating-Your-Rekordbox-Database which doesnt seem to answer my question?

Thanks

Ed 'Gex' Garner

i've done it twice now with no problems.
Rekordbox is actually quite good at this. :)
Just try it yourself. Move a folder with some subfolders which contains a few tracks.
Open the track in rekordbox, Rekordbox will detect it is missing.
Now you can locate the song and Rekordbox will reconnect the rest of the missing tracks.
If for one reason or another something goes wrong the damage is small.
But I didn't have problems at all. Works like a charm.

@Ed > Migrating your rekordbox database is one option or you can use the relocate option as above like RamonCC. I would go with the Migration option (there is more to it, but its a better option).

Gavin - thought Id continue this thread cos my issue is similar.

Been using your 2011 migrating instructions regularly since then, with few issues. Although i recently tried using the official FAQ method (http://rekordbox.com/support/faq.php?lang=en&c=184) but this didnt work for me.

My master PC (WIndows 7) had a 120gb solid state drive installed at the weekend - my Rekordbox files are over 250 gb so storing them with the same filepath isnt an option anymore. Luckily i saved my recently updated RB to my slave lappy (again Windows 7) before deleting the old drive...but I need RB on the PC.

BTW this guy - http://blog.akatell.com/post/65901346951/migrating-pioneer-rekordbox-database-with-different - managed to change filepaths using Macs.

I bought a 3TB Seagate Control external wifi drive to store my RB and sync the lappy and the pc to it. I figured if I could reassign both the filepaths to the Seagate, that would work. i thought if i could corrupt my file name then id be free to use the RB 'relocate' function, but Rekordbox wont let me change the file name on my lappy. Then I wouldve migrated back to the PC using your old 'remove the licence key' system.

What would you recommend? At this stage I dont mind ditching the Seagate - my priority is getting RB back on my PC. Ive kept my old 1.5TB hard drive on the PC with a back up copy of RB on it. Im a bit OCD like Ed too, with 2 years worth of artwork, cue points, loops and info invested.

update which maybe useful for others:

i used'map network drive' in windows 7 to create similar file paths...then migrated the traditional way. it worked...sort of.

problem is ive lost all my waveforms and had to re-analyse. this represents not hours, but days wasted as much of my collection is vinyl rips and i had adjusted the beatgrids throughout the tracks.

how do i migrate without losing my beatgridding?
