[SOLVED] colour and ratings, what are you using them for

interested in what you guys are using for colours and ratings........ there was an interesting read on dj tools were some dj was using ratings as

  • 1 star tracks: These are tracks which you would play in the opening period of your sets, the hours when the club just opened or which create such a feeling for you. The beginning. The deepest or “softest” sounds you own.
  • 3 star tracks: These tracks are best used in the main hours of your set. When you play these tracks, you’re right in the middle of your set and keep the vibe going. Or again they create such a vibe for you.
  • 5 star tracks: Right here you have the peak time tracks, the banging stuff, the closing tracks, the hardest stuff on your hard drive,… You get the idea

what does everyone think of this? anyone got a different way of using ratings?

what about colours? what are you using that for?

would really appreciate everyones feedback :)

I don't use ratings but I use colors, Mainly because I can name them. I like doing this because then i don't have to have separate playlists, i can do 1 playlist and break that up by colors

for me as a mobile guy I have some colors labeled as "Open main room" "good" "club" etc.....  all the dance tracks then are in one dance playlist and I color them based on that, then when i load up the playlist on the nexus, I hit sort/color and "open main (pink color) is at the top for the beginning of my parties

hope that helps you out and others reply too, I am always interested in hearing how people organize also

in the RB settings you can "name" the colors. Go to "preferences and choose the color tab and name away

I renamed my Colors as follows, based on the time of night appropriateness/energy level:

Ambient/Intro

Early Night

Deep

Build-Up

Transition

Peak Time

Blow Up

End of Night/Encore

I sometimes use the Ratings for the energy level within the same colors.   For example, an Orange (Peak Time) track with 2 stars is less energy than an Orange 4 stars.

hey fuse thanks for the feedback m8, yours is also a good idea.................... im loving the idea of sub genres for colours, just a pity there arent more colours.  i play trance so id like to put it into uplifting, uplifting vocal, emotional, psy, tech, 140, banging, progressive..... and the list goes on, wish they would give us more colours now as its a great way to divide into sub genres without having to rename all your files in the genre section.

made a request, hopefully they will implement it soon, from what i can see they could add black and white..... hopefully an easy thing to do for the coders :)

i have mixed in key with the energy levels built in, ranges from 1 to 10 i think so using that for energy levels, using the stars now for 1 beginning of set 3 build up and 5 banging

if anyone else reads this please add what you do with anything that helps organise your collection better :)

thanks to brichi and fuse so far, appreciated guys

@ Zeus     Why do you need colors for sub genres?  There is already a Genre field which you can type anything you want into.  Just put your genre descriptors into the Genre Field.

For example,  I might put the following as a Genre for a track:     House, Deep, Vocal         House, Techno      House, Progressive

@ fuse yeah i had toyed with that idea bro but i find it easier to use the colours..... if you put the colour before your genre and its labeled uplifting vocal it reads as uplifting vocal (colour) and then right next to it trance (genre). this way i can label alot of tunes at the same time in rb without having to edit a load of tunes in mp3tag......... but this has given me food for though bro, as I'm at the early stages of orginising my RB collection so wanna get it right before choosing a solution :)

1 star - do not play this song

5 start - top of the line

I use the colors like a sort of energy, like powerful, or easy going.

@ RamonCC       Why would you have music you need to label  "Do Not Play This Song?"     LOL

I don't use either ratings or colors.  Anything that doesn't rate does not make the crate and gets culled from the collection pretty quickly.  Colors might be useful to classify energy, but I usually go by sound in the context of the particular set.  Stats:  4k tracks in the main library, 20k in the back catalog of pop and rock music.  I rarely draw from the back catalog except to pull that sample or breakdown that just calls to me (or the promoter really wants an 80's pop set that feels like breaks, lol)

@fuse Promote: when I listen to a cd I rate the songs.
If I don't like the song, I rate it 1 star.
I don't just delete the song.
When i have another cd with that song, I detect the doubles.
So I see that I already rated it 1 star, so I won't be bothered to rate it again.
Just delete the double. Saves time.

I have my colors assigned like so

Samples & Interludes

Warm Up

Chill

Bangers

Wind Down Relax

Trippy

Risky

Ratchet (songs that will get everyone moving no.matter.what.)

I'm currently in the process of going through my rather extensive music library, listening to every song individually, and then as I listen I type every adjective that comes to mind in the comments section. Then I create playlists by searching for only certain adjectives (for example; 'seduce, dance' would show my dance songs that are all about romance or gettin laid. If I search 'seduce, dance, slow, beautiful' I'll get more romantic songs, and if I search 'seduce, dance, pimpin, dope' I'll get more playboy-like songs). Then the songs are already arranged by color,  so I can easily get started with a set by searching 'dance, party, dope' and then starting with an Orange (warm up) track, then once I have the party at a good vibe and level, I move on to Yellow (chill) to maintain that vibe, and once the party starts getting out of hand and people want more action, do a couple Blue's (Bangers). Maybe if the party needs a little boost I'll put on something Purple (Ratchet) to get things moving. I also like to tag my songs with adjectives like 'intro' and 'outro', that way I can find the perfect way to start a set by searching 'dance, party, dope, intro' and then building off of that song. Then when I want to change the music up, I'll play a couple Light Blue's (Wind Down Relax) and then end the set on a Light Blue with the adjective 'outro' in the comments section. Then I could switch it up to 'weed, thug life, pimpin, intro' and start on an Orange. Rinse repeat.

I only use the rating function when I really like a song and think it's worthy of a 4 or 5
