Request for Quick Comparison: DDJ-T1 / DDJ-S1 / S4
Hi guys… I'm trying to help a friend with his first foray into mixing. I'd love to get some input here first, before I make an explicit recommendation and have him pull the trigger on his purchase. Since I use CDJ-2000s / DJM-2000, I don't know much about the array of features or limitations of the DDJ controllers (nor do I know much about Traktor or Serato, frankly)—so I'd really appreciate some quick generalities about these various options. I'm asking a lazy question, so lazy answers are fine...
In my limited knowledge, the T1 seems like it might be the best option. It looks like a versatile, quality all-in-one controller that will be good for learning the fundamentals of mixing—and it also looks like it would provide a good foundation for moving to CDJs and a traditional mixer setup in the future (based on similarity of layout, and controls, etc.). I'd love some feedback on that line of thinking. I have a couple specific questions as well:
- He's a newbie, and is inclined towards Traktor. Is there any reason to select Serato over Traktor if he's never used either?
- Are there options for the version of software that comes with the DDJ controllers, and/or are there any recommended upgrades after purchase?
- What are the main differences between the S4 and the T1? (broad strokes is fine, and I'm inclined to recommend the T1 regardless)
Basically—any feedback you can toss out would be appreciated, and it's fine if it's a one-sided opinion. I'm more or less looking for confirmation that the DDJ-T1 would be a good choice, and also wondering about specific version recommendations / issues, etc.

The software comes down to personal preference, but either will get the job done. I chose the T1 over the S1 because I wanted 4 channels. I've played with an S4 and it works well, has very tight integration with the software. It's too small for my preference though. I could never see myself going back to vinyl or cdj's after owning my T1 for over a year now. Tell your buddy to get a T1 so you can try it and see how great it is.

I would say the S1 is a better choice over the T1 simply for the fact the software is easier to learn / use and is very intuitive (plus it's less fiddly to set up and configure). The T1 would provide better expandability / growth later within Traktor, but having used many many many controllers, I still prefer the S1 and Itch.

I will have to disagree with you there Pulse. I went from never using software to Traktor and had no problem with the transition. Months later I had a mess about with one of your competitors controllers that is for use with Serato and found the software very confusing and disturbing to look at and far less responsive. The responsiveness could of been the controller. I guess this is why they say software is a personal preference.

For me, I agree with pulse on the Serato software especially if you are mixing on uneven BPMs e.g. 70s, 80s, 90s. I just hope Pioneer would release a 4-deck controller fully functional with Itch like the NS6 and A&H DX soon. A DDJ-S2 maybe?
