DDJ SX Microphone Distorted

There's a LPF (low pass filter) and HPF (high pass filter) on each channel. The filter settings on the mic output channel could be the cause of your distortion… You should check that for sure.

yes i checked that first. the filters are off (12oclock) or should i be using them?

Where was the channel gain for the mic? If you have that turned too high it can distort the signal sent to the master.

I had the same problem over the weekend at my club gigs. The microphone was definately distorted, very rough sounding. I checked the filter and adjusted the mic gain down and up and tried adjusting the low mid and high frequency on the mic channel and those things did relatively nothing. Please help us with this issue because the microphone is a very important part of a dj's setup. 

you may need to use a mic whose volume you can lower before inputting to the ddj-sx...just a theory....e.g volume controls on most sure mic wireless transmitters....the input volume could be too high...this is just a theory that may help you out

i also have the same problem very dissapointed on this product i have bought this to keep in my studio for use of my radio show and without being able to use the mic input it has made this impossible...most likeley gonna be a return unfortunately.

Finished my gig last night ......... LOVE the unit ..... BUT the MIC is TERRIBLE switched things around over and over ...... Ruined my gig the Mic is sooooo Important to me for what I do!  Pioneer Please RESPOND! its not the LPF or HPF either this is internal possibly a workmanship defect! I have a gig coming up this weekend .... I may have to return this .... so SAD because i LOVE EVERYTHING about this unit except the MIC sounds TOTALLY DISTORTED and TERRIBLE!!! HELP ASAP!!!  whats sad is .... I may have to buy a external mixer just to sound better! after spending 1000.00 +  not happy!!! 

Hey guys,I don't have my unit in yet but my friend that has one found a work around...he said if you use a 1/4 instead of XLR on mic 1 that's when u get all the distortion...XLR has no issues & sounds perfect...maybe a grounding issue...mic 2 he said works just fine with the 1/4 connection.

So can one of you test this out and let us know if its a workaround? Thanks

Another workaround for now is using a sound card with a mic input e.g those from Native instruments as they figure out what the problem is...sucks to have to do this but it's a workaround.

so i plugged my mic in to my native instruments audio 8 sound card in line 5 via xlr.. and out in to the line on the pioneer ddi-sx line via rca and for some reason the output volume is really low almost non existent,,anyone kno why?...is it just because this mixer is a piece of shit and theres nothing you can do about it?..lol

also  have noticed while hooking up any other external device such as cd player on the ddi-sx lines the output is low.

filippo...did u adjust the line volume and it was still low?....if so...may be a defective unit...

The mic issue seems to be a workmanship problem...it's sad because this unit would have been the perfect controller :-(

yea i adjust the line volume and the eq's still distorted.. i even tried changing the master output to -6db in the utility settings but still have the problem..so is this a problem on all controllers? or should i return it and get a new controller?

If you are using a MIC LEVEL DEVICE whether it's a wired or wireless mic, you should have only to adjust the input levels for that channel and it will not distort.  If you are using a wireless mic as a LINE level device, try using one of the CD inputs and ensure your gain is not distorting the input.

Ok this is the deal on mic line one you have to use xlr's with wireless mics not sure about mic line 2 I'm going to try to use a 1/4 inch with my wired mic tonight the cd mode thing doesn't work

Not sue if this will help but I just had a tinker about with my SX. Having owned the Denon DNMC6000 which has a microphone problem I knew what to try out so gave it a go.

My microphone of choice is the Sennheiser Freeport wireless handheld mic.

I rigged up a pair of active speakers to hear what was going on.

First off I got a dance track playing and set the VU levels to 0db on the channel 2 and master output, speakers set to comfortable level

The best way I found to set the Mic up was set the channel Trim (ch3) to 12 o colock, ch3 slider to full. whilst talking over the mic I brought the gain down on the Mic receiver from fully open until there was no distortion.

It does appear the Trim pot on the mic doesn't do a lot until it hits around the 9 oclock mark. I can turn the Trim up to 1 oclock and my mic volume is the same as the music output. The VU levels on the channel does hit the red but bringing the 'Low' pot down reduces this.

Trying it over my main PA will see if I have a perfectly usable mic!

I did a bit of testing today to compare the DDJ-SX to other mixers and here's what I found...

The mic pre-amp does tend to distort a bit, but only when the mic signal is hot!  The way around this is to actually increase the trim on the mic channel as doing so will typically result in the mic user speaking quieter as less effort is required because the mic volume is higher.  If they simply keep talking louder and upping your levels because they don't know how to use a mic, educate them!

Out of curiosity what mic did you use? Make, Model, wired, wireless?

In all due respect, have you ever done an event where the speaker on the mic gets a bit excited and raises their voice? Educating them soon gets forgotten and then you get distortion. Doesn't look good on the guy who is controlling the gear.

I used the DJM3000 for 8 years, never once an issue with the mic. So why are we getting it now?

The reason why so many people are selling the Denon DN MC6000 is because of the mic issues. I got around it by using a -20db XLR attenuator which made the output from the mic quieter. It worked but still not that great.

As I spent a couple hours today rigging my gear, testing it to help others on here and doing a report. Do you reckon SOMEONE could answer my questions ref the DDJ SX and issues. You will find the topic on here. I have also called and emailed one of your Tech guys who didn't have a clue about the controller! He told me some of the lights won't work if using the USB power, I had to stop him talking by telling him you HAVE to have the unit plugged in to make it work lol!

I used both a wired Shure SM58 and a wireless EV RE2.  And yes, I work mobile events almost every weekend, so I've got uneducated mic users all the time.  I have only had a problem with the distortion a couple of times because of the technique of having the mic gain high enough so they don't need to yell (yet low enough I don't get feedback.)

The tech guy was probably referring to the DDJ-S1 and DDJ-T1 which require the power for illumination and XLR / 1/4" output, the DDJ-SX requires power at all times.

Without going off the subject, the Tech guy knew we were talking about the SX. Shame they have a lack of knowledge on a subject/ job they should be trained in.

Given the age of the SX, he could have based his information on previous knowledge, not yet knowing the details of the SX by heart.

The DDJ-SX hates a very loud input(line level which is 40-60db louder than XLR) simple solution is use XLR to XLR on Mic 1 & XLR to 1/4 on mic 2.Problem solved :-) report back fellas.

Pioneer,  I did find my XLR outputs very tight using different cables.  As a dj since 1984, I have never ran into this issue before.  But,  I did run into a major issue at my gig Saturday:  I did not like the sound coming out of my wireless mic via the XLR connection so I tried a 1/4 phone plug and it got stuck in the connector.  I could not remove it out of the connector, I waited until I got home and had to apply force to attempt to remove it.  I managed to get it out, however the tip broke off and it's still in the unit.  With this said, I am still excited about this unit but, I hope this issue does not cost me any more money.   I bought it online at Musicians Friend.

I used a Shure Wirelexx PGX4 last night with a balanced XLR on mic 1.  Levels were only 1/2 way in the green and I was getting distortion on the mic.  When I tested before the event it sounded great, but that was not the case when we started the wedding.  I cannot believe that Pioneer has not come forward with a work around or fix yet.  Get your serial # and call 1-800-228-7221 to open a ticket.

There's also a toggle switch on the back of most sure wireless Mic Receivers that switches from Mic to Line...make sure you have it on Mic not Line...unless you're gonna use one of the Line inputs.

My wireless Shure SM58 sounds horrible (XLR connected and the level was in the "green"), and I don't have any switch or volume level on my mic to correct the input.  That makes me looked like a fool at my gig yesterday.

This is a major issue and I cannot take this unit for another gig.  Lucky I didn't have time to sell my CDJ+DJM-800 yet.

Is Pioneer working on something ? Otherwise, i'll look for a whole refund, this unit is totally useless for me right now.
