XDJ RX first use/impressions

Hi all,

i know the forum is for mostly problems but thought id share my first outing with the new XDJ RX.

Unit arrived early friday, was in the middle of cutting the grass so had to wait/work an hour while it was sitting unopened in the kitchen, finally got it out the box and immediately updated to the latest 1.60 firmware as advised by Pulse, this id imagine would of rid any early/known bugs. First impressions were 'wow thats big' which it is, even more so standing side by side with my Denon mc6000. Had all my music sorted and ready to go on RB so was straight into it, and regardless of what you use these days anyone with 'time-served' knows their way around pioneer gear, the set up looks smart, feels well built, the screen is really impressive, so overall first impressions are good. Had a few tests throughout the day and worked perfect.

Set off to work with my tractor/denon set up to hand but also took along the RX in the flight case, was only planning on showing my club manager who loves his tech it but before i knew it we were creating space to fit the unit in, set it up directly to the clubs mixer via phono as was really the only option at short notice but everything else (mic etc) were straight into the RX... the unit worked great, mic sounded great, everything went as smooth as i could of hoped, felt much more hands on than with my traktor/denon setup, only problem i had was 2mins from the end of the night i when to remove the mic lead and accidentally hit the power button, surly can't of been the only one to of done this lol. After my first night use I've got a few questions and suggestions as below.

  1. When scrolling for tracks via alphabet is there anyway of backing out the alphabet to scroll down the list it brings up other than the return (think its the last character on the right) key? found myself searching say CALVIN HARRIS, but getting to CAL which is enough to fetch whats needed but then adding another L by mistakenly pressing the scroller rotator knob down making it CALL, i hope that makes sense, if it doesn't ill re visit what I'm doing to expand more, as other than that i found the search process pretty easy.

  2. I know this has been covered before but the 'load lock' will be a great addition and i believe its in the pipeline for a future update.

  3. Pardon my ignorance but the only button i didn't really know the function of was 'slip' not sure what that is if anyone would be so kind.

  4. Ive read a post asking for some kind of 'auto level' i know this, if ever added would be of course optional but i really don't think this unit needs it, i found it much more beneficial doing it myself, rather than perviously relying on traktor which i always found terrible at the process.

  5. When i changed a cue point, do i have to press memory or will the new cue point be saved automatically.

  6. Always wait till the end of your set to remove the mic lead. ;-)

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and my advice for anyone thinking about making the jump to one of these units, as long as you've got the space go for it, i have a venue i play at every now and again that simply would never fit one of these units in so ill be keeping my other set up for the reason among the obvious back up mentality.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Hey @Steve, thanks for your comments - feedback as well as questions are always welcome and appreciated.

That mic "oops" ... ouch! I've done that once, where I was trying to pull a power cord for a monitor and ended up grabbing the audio processing rack. Power down! Good thing it was the last dance of the evening at an event where it wasn't really a big deal since everyone was drunk! ;)

To answer your questions...

1) Unfortunately the only way to clear it would be to use that backspace icon / key. Even pressing the BACK button and re-entering the search retains the previous search content.

2) Yes! Load-lock is coming in a future update. ;)

3) Slip is a fantastic feature (also known as "drunk mode"), here's a video outlining how it works and how you can use it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ilucq43dm4

4) Glad to hear that feedback. Thanks!

5) Master cue points will not be saved; if you want to retain that point you can either save it as a memory point or hot cue, which WILL be saved and can be synchronized with your rekordbox collection.

6) Great tip. ;)
