I'm very interested in a standalone configuration :
- 2 XDJ 1000
- 1 DJM S9
I wanted to know how does the S9 behave without Serato, specifically with the FX part and the performance pads.
FX : are there onboard FX, or just the Serato FX ?
Pads : can they work directly with the XDJ, as Cue 1-8, for example ?
I intend to work with RekordBox-prepared USB Key only, if I don't lose too many features...

@Lam > The S9 would work great with two XDJs as a computer-less mixer. There are onboard effects, but the pads an not be assigned to control hot cues from the players. However, if you were to use the players with rekordbox in performance mode (and if the engineers provide full integration for the S9 with rekordbox), you may have access to them, but that's a future hope!

Thanks a lot for the answer! If I sum up, the S9/XDJ1000 combo would work perfectly as a standalone setup, but the pads wouldn't be active or even usable, as they only work with a supported software like Serato.
Interesting, but it make the great S9 a less interesting standalone mixer right now. Love those pads!

Correct. Unfortunately, because the mixer communicates via USB whereas the hot cue and link information is sent over ethernet, the S9 will likely never feature control over connected players, but as I mentioned, I would expect to see rekordbox integration in future.

I haven't given up on my dream standalone performance setup! With the new CDJ-2000NXS, would it be possible to route the S9 performance pads?
- We know that the S9 performance pads are a Midi Controller working with any DJ software.
- We know that the CDJ-2000 NXS2 USB Port can talk with a Midi Controller such as the DDJ-SP1
- Pioneer said that they'd expand their midi control options in the future
So this S9 / 2000NXS2 100% standalone combo seems totally doable (and exciting) hardware-wise to me. It would be more a matter of firmware update / advanced community hack.
Can I show some excitement, or am I missing a crucial point?
@Lam > It's more than just MIDI communication with regards to connecting the DDJ-SP1 to the CDJ-2000NXS2 for control, and unfortunately it's possible we won't see integration or compatibility with other products on the NXS2. Older CDJ models also won't be able to take advantage of these features either due to the circuitry, it's not just a firmware update required.

Thanks for your feedback. I thought Pioneer would expand the range of compatible controllers with the NXS2 and incoming decks. It's been confirmed at the Paris Master Class I attended 2 days ago. And they stressed out it was just MIDI, hence the community hype for more controllers like Midi Fighters and such.
I'm well aware existing CDJ and XDJ models can't support midi control, but hope the next ones will, like the 2000NXS2.
Still holding on to my dreams of a 100% capable standalone S9 :)
I would think the S9 could work thinking that its USB midi out into the NXS2 USB port, same way the SP1 works. Its not ethernet based, its USB
It's more than just connecting something by USB that allows the MIDI support. I'd expect that the DJM-900NXS2 has a special chunk of code (or even hardware) allowing it to communicate with the DDJ-SP1.
Doesn't the DDJ-SP1 talk directly with the CDJ-2000NXS2? I think it's USB Out to the CDJ's USB port (if I recall correctly the Master Class where they showed us the new gear). Then, you can control up to 4 CDJ thanks to Pro DJ Link, but the DJM-900NXS2 doesn't handle any midi here.

The DJM-900NXS2 usb port is for FX stuff.
The DJM-900NXS2 USB host port is only for "digital send/return" to an iOS device.
The CDJ-2000NXS2 USB host port is currently only for the DDJ-SP1 and as far as I'm aware, there are no plans to allow communication with other products (like the DJM-S9) for MIDI control.
Has anything changed in the last 18+ months regarding using DJM-S9 performance pads with the CDJ-2000NXS2 via USB, in a laptop-free topology? Only thing holding me back from upgrading to an S9! A DDJ-SP2 or RP1 with RGB pads would be great also, just saying ;-)

Now that the DDJ-XP1 has been released, and the CDJ-2000NXS2 firmware has been updated to accommodate a second MIDI device connected directly via USB, is it not safe to say that it's POSSIBLE to update the CDJ-2000NXS2 firmware to support ANY Pioneer MIDI device, DJM-S9 included?
I'm only asking if it's possible, not PROBABLE... If it were possible, the S9's Performance pads would certainly be more appealing to us CDJ users, and not only to Laptop/DVS users.
I used to own the DDJ-SP1, and I'll most likely buy the DDJ-XP1, but I think it's always great to have options! Great for Pioneer as well no doubt!
