Using XDJ-RX2 in standalone mode

This might be a dumb a question, and I apologise if it is. I’m looking at upgrading my DDJ-RR and getting an XDJ-RX2 because of the standalone versatility and not having to drag along my laptop too. I do have a question though, sometimes I might use this for gigs where I have to bring along a massive collection of tracks (weddings, corporate events, etc).

When used in standalone mode, can I plug an external hard drive into the USB ports rather than using memory sticks?

Thanks in advance for any advice regarding this

Cheers,

Martin

Yep - any USB device will work provided the power draw is within normal range! I've seen guys with massive external desktop HDs running the XDJ-RX2.

That sounds promising.

Would a mains powered external hard drive be the best option then?

Most portable HDD's will work just fine - my only recommendation would be to avoid Western Digital Passport drives, those are really the only ones I've seen consistent complaints about when used with Pioneer DJ gear. Some may work, but others fail hard.

I’ve been looking at hard drives today and I think the LaCie 4tb tugged HDD is probably the most suitable, but before I spend £150 on one of those and £1500 on the RX2 I need to know that I will be able to access my full collection. There are currently over 30,0000 songs in my Rekordbox library but I’ve been reading things about a 10,000 song limit...

No - the original XDJ-RX had a recommendation of using less than 10,000 songs as it would suffer from a slower performance accessing the database with more than that, but the RX2 is good to go with larger databases.

Perfect. Looks like the RX2 has won out over the DDJ-1000 and a new laptop, I’m gonna order one after payday.

Thanks for all the help :)

Sorry, just one more question.

Not all of the tracks in my Rekordbox library are in playlists. Is there an option inside Rekordbox to export my entire collection to a hard drive. Every post I read about moving the database seems to apply to moving everything to a new computer, I’ll be keeping the same laptop but moving all of my music files to the new hard drive. I don’t want to lose all of my metadata, such as cue points, manually adjusted best grids, etc..

^what I mean is that I want to be able to plug the hard drive into the RX2 and have everything still there. How would I move the library metadata to the external hard drive so that it could then be used both standalone through the RX2 or with the hard drive connected to the laptop and using Rekordbox DJ via pro dj link...

Yes; just select all of your songs and export them to the USB drive. If you have your master database and collection already on an external drive, simply export to that same location and it will prepare an export database for use with your RX2.

I don’t have anything on an external drive yet, but I’mve seen a thread on here about moving your database to a different computer,. I guess I just follo that, right?

Am I correct in thinking that once this is done the same library will work on the RX2 in standalone mode AND via Rekordbox DJ using a laptop?

Yes, you can move the database and move all your songs to an external drive, then relocate them all in their new home. Once that's done, select all the songs and "export" them to that same drive - it creates links to the physical files and generate the export database which the RX2 uses.

It's not exactly the same library as the export database is used by the RX2, meaning any changes you make need to be "re-imported" by right-clicking on the device and selecting "Update Collection."

I use a xdj-rx2 with a LaCie 1TB portable hardrive. You don’t need to move your database. Keep it on your computer for when you’re at home. All you need to do is go to your collection in rekordbox, select all songs (cmd+a or ctrl+a on windows) then drag to external hard drive in rekordbox. With 30000 this will take a while as rekordbox exports all analyzed waveforms and other metadata. Once this is done then you ca drop you playlists in the same way (when dropping your playlists in it won’t take more than a second because re songs are already on exported now). Each time you make a change to the hard drive collection during a set you will need to plug it back in when you get home and update cue points. Similarly, each time you make add songs or make changes to existing ones you will need to export to the external
HDD through rekordbox. If you want to put your database on your external HDD you can do what Pulse is saying also but I don’t trust any external HDD arhat much. BACKUP EVERYTHING SOMEWHERE ELSE ALWAYS! Also I did hear a rumour that the xdj-rx2 can’t see more than 1000 songs in a playlist off an external HDD but I’m yet to test that theory.

Is it also possible for the XDJ RX2 to read a large USB external drive (1TB) without having the songs in the rekordbox library?
The external drive is full of music I don't play a lot...only when requested at a wedding or the like, and therefore I don't want to keep them in rekordbox.
I have a Transcend 1TB drive full of music. The RX2 shows the folders, but they appear as empty.

@Brecht > You could, but did you export the songs from rekordbox or were they already on the drive in folders?

I know it’s late but this is the only thing I can find on the internet about this. I understand every that has been discussed here. One question, what if the external hard drive has a password encryption on it, how can the rx2 get through that? Just Incase I lose it or get it stolen, that person won’t have access to a big chunk of song collection I’ve worked hard on. You know?
