why are mp4a files playing low volume in preview but mp3s are ok

MP4 is different from M4A, do you know which your songs are?
And M4A files are basically a wrapper for another audio encoder, either AAC or ALAC. It's entirely possible that the audio within has a lower level than your MP3s.

m4a are files i buy from itunes, they do not have a lower volume than mp3, when i used windows 10 they were fine, in widows 11 2022/22h2 there playing at a lower volume, when i use my cdj 3000 with link and drag & drop tracs on to cdjs they play fine at right volume, its only when i preview tracks in rekordbox,they are playing at a lower volume, i think its somthing to do with rekordbox & windows 11 2022/22h2. PS they play fine in virtual DJ.
