What is DJM 2000 missing compared to DJM 900?

Hi,

Since DJM 900 Nexus is newer, I'm wondering what features does it have that the DJM 2000 doesn't. Really excited about the 2000, but want to understand what I might miss out on from the newer 900?

Thanks,

Ivan

xy pad and a few extra effects,

it would be better to focus on what the 2k has over the nexus,

Personally i have used both and prefer my 2k.

@Ivan > They are both very similar yet with many differences. Bring up a picture of the 2000 and the 900 and compare them...

Both have Quantized features

Both have built in sound cards and can record directly to software

DJM-2000 has 6 LAN connections on back of mixer

DJM-900 has 1 LAN connection and requires an ethernet switch to connect multiple units and access a computer running Rekordbox

DJM-900 has 6 Sound Color Effects that have a hi-pass and low-pass control with 1 knob

DJM-2000 has 6 INST FX that uses 2 knobs to control effect

DJM-900 has X-pad (touch effects pad)

DJM-2000 has 6.5" touchscreen that can control MIDI loops in software, allows for 7 channel cross fader

DJM-900 has 13 beat effects on the right side

DJM-2000 has 11 effects in the top center and has hi, mid, and low control on the effect

My advice would be to start watching a lot of YouTube videos to see what you like better. ;)

Thank you both. Really appreciate it and yes, have checked out YouTube vides, pics etc.

FX wise I can't tell if the 900 has new cool fx that the 2000 doesn't, or if they renamed 2000 fx for the 900. What re the fx on the 900 that are missing on the 2000 and how important do think they are?

I also couldn't find how the 900 can send back a "5th" audio channel back to Traktor to record the master output from the 900 in Traktor. The 2000 video specifically points out that capability.

Lastly, the 900 seems to have a hard time being a "midi slave" to Traktors master clock. Wonder if the 2000 allows for it to be configured as such, so the quantized fx can be in sync with Traktor BPM.

Thought?

@Ivan > Just Google for large pictures and enlarge them to see the different effects on each unit.

The DJM-900 has 8 inputs and 8 outputs. Right and Left together to create 4 Channels in and 4 Channels out. You can record from any of those outputs.

It's a Traktor software issue with the DJM following the Traktor MIDI clock I believe. If you use CDJ's to control Traktor, just LINK your CDJ's to your DJM and everything will be synced and Quantized.

Thanks, Foster. I started looking into the 2000 because I couldn't figure out if the DJM 900 didn't have enough channels to record audio in Traktor. Seems like the 900 has 2x the digital channels than the 2000, and apperantly there is an OSX bug that's preventing Traktor to record master out of the DJM 900. Any updates on that fix?

Any more info on 900 vs 2000 and Traktor specifically... I just purchased the 900, and am only using two decks at the moment, but would like to be able to use all 4 and be able to record as well... does that mean I need a fifth channel, which only the 2000 has?

@keithos27 > I'm a little confused with your question. Will you be picking up another 2 players to use all 4 channels, or do you mean you want to use all 4 decks in Traktor?

The DJM-2000 can be set as 8 outputs and 0 inputs, or can be changed to 6 outputs and 2 inputs for recording. These include left and right stereo.

The DJM-900 has an 8 output and 8 input sound card. These also include left and right stereo.

That being said, yes you can use the DJM-900 to control all 4 decks via timecode through the DJM-900, and still record your mix via the USB cable and using 1 of those channel inputs.

@Foster

Sorry I'm still trying to learn all the ins and outs... I'd like to be able to use 4 CDJs or 4 decks within TSP AND be able to record everything within TSP or a different program if I was using straight up CDs or Rekordbox.

Can I do this with the 900 or only the 2000? Or both? Or neither? Lol...

@keithos27 > No worries. lol

So you'll be using 4 CDJ's, or will you use something else to control the other 2 Traktor decks? Or timecode?

Either way... you can use 4 decks with Traktor Scratch Pro using the timecode and the DJM-900, and still be able to record via the DJM-900 built in sound card. Just think of it as, you can record with the DJM-900 using 4 decks of any type or using any type of DJ software. This means you can run any type of 4 decks or CDJ's or external media, while still having 8 channel inputs to record with.

The DJM-2000 however, needs to be switched from an 8 output and 0 input setting, to use a 6 output and 2 input, in order to have those 2 to record with. This renders 1 output on the DJM-2000 as an input. If you're using CD's or Rekordbox then it doesn't matter. It only matters when you have software using that output. In this case think of it as, you can use 4 CDJ's running Rekordbox, CD's, USB devices, or any type of external media on the DJM-2000 even when you are recording. However, you cannot use 8 channel outputs on the DJM-2000 when you want to record. You can only use 6 channel outputs.

Let me know if that makes any sense? lol

But just to be clear, you will be using the timecode CD's and not using the CDJ's in HID mode to control Traktor correct?

@Foster, lol thanks.

Right now I'm only using 2 CDJ-2000s with timecode CDs... but I want to expandability down the road to do whatever I want (that's readily available today). I just bought the 900 but am within the return period to upgrade to the 2000 if that better suits what I want...

So down the line I'd be interested in using 4 CDJs or 4 decks within TSP.  The CDJs would either be timecode CDs or would be CDs/flash drives/rekordbox/etc.

I think what I'm fundamentally missing is HOW to record within TSP if I'm using all 4 channels for external devices (CDJs) or 4 decks.  I was *assuming* that's what I'd need a 5th channel for, but it sounds like that is incorrect?

I don't use the CDJ-2000s in HID mode to control Traktor... I have their timecode CDs to do that.  That's a whole other question I have, too, by the way...

To throw another wrench in the equation, I use a Native Instruments Kontrol X1 controller to load files, browse, have 8 hot cues per deck, etc in TSP.  I *believe* that using the CDJs in HID mode is more limited in functionality than the X1, correct? For example, how do I use 8 hot cues per deck on the CDJ-2000?

Sorry if I'm all over the place... just trying to figure out (while there is still time) if the 900 or 2000 is the better option for me...

Thanks for replying and helping!  MUCH appreciated!  :)

@keithos27 > If you're planning on using 4 decks with timecode, you're best bet would be to stick with the DJM-900 as it's Traktor certified and replaces the external sound card completely, and you can record at the same time.

 It's not that you need a 5th channel, it's that you need an "input channel" to record into the software with.

 I would say an X1 makes your controls more simple than trying to map everything you want to the CDJ and remembering it all. Using the Timecode CD's also provides you with no latency within Traktor, while using HID mode can result in latency issues if your computer is not up to driving the power.

 The CDJ's in HID mode have more control than just the CDJ's using timecode, but if you feel you can assign everything using an X1, then do what you prefer or are use to.

No worries, you can check out Pulse's video  HERE, and it might help with some things. ;)
