[SOLVED] DJM 900 Nexus, MIDI connection thru an USB hub does not work.

Hello Forum.

I have mapped some buttons of my DJM-900 Nexus to control my program (Mix Emergency) for vdeos.  I am using the cable that came with the mixer but it seems like it only works when the cable is connected directly to the USB port on the laptop (MacBook Pro.)  I need to free-up an USB port so I tried using an USB hub to connect the cable from the mixer into the hub and from the hub into the laptop; this does not seem to work,  am I doing something worng?  Or the MIDI functionality of the mixer does not work if connected thru an USB hub?

Plase advice.

Anyone?  Should the midi programming work if there is and USB hub in between the mixer and the laptop?  Again when I connect the USB cable form the mixer to the laptop I can manipulate my software with the mapped buttons on the mixer but If i do it though an USB hub, this does not work.  please advice.

Thanks for the reply Justin.  are you using that unit as a hub?  I guess I do not understand how would I connect this in order to free up a USB port on my laptop?  right now I am using the USB cable that came with the mixer and I am using the usb port on top of the mixer (left top corner)  and the midi functions work fine, but if I use a hub in between midi do not work.  :)

I am not using that unit as a hub. The USB connection on the DJM-900 is not what you want to use. Directly on the back of the DJM-900 is a midi connection. You use that one to the m-audio box I suggested, and then usb from that to your computer. I use a powered USB hub since I use another midi controller as well

@ VJ Justing Allen - Thanks man, I got it now.  So, if I want to free up one port on my laptop, can I do this then?  Will it work   (see picture attached)

Yes...it will work the way you drew it.

I have 2 USB ports on my Mac. One is dedicated for Serato. The other goes to a Kingston powered USB 4 port hub. From that hub the USB cable from my M-Audio box is plugged in (M-Audio has a midi cable to DJM-900), and a USB cable to my X1 is plugged in.

@ Justin Allen - I have another question.... on the back of the MIDISPORT interface there is the MIDI OUT A port and also the USB port.  Which one do I use to cennect to my laptop?  Can I use the MIDI OUT A port to conect the laptop and the USB port for the optional USB-Type external power supply?

The USB port goes from your laptop to the Midisport. The midi cable goes from the Midisport to the mixer. It uses a 5 pin Midi cable if I remember right.

OK got it, I got confused because you said on your first post "You also need to get a USB to midi cable."  But now it makes sense.

VJ Justing, do you mind taking a picture on how you connect the MIDISPORT to your mixer and the MIDISPORT to the laptop?  Thank you.

M-Audio MIDISport UNO did the trick

This is what I did.

  1.  Plugged the UNO MIDI connector (to MIDI out) to the MIDI out terminal of my mixer

2, Connected the UNO USB connector to one of the ports of my mac

The UNO was recognized and was able to send MIDI messages from my mixer to MixEmergency (program for videos)

Then I did this.

  1.  Plugged the UNO MIDI connector (to MIDI out) to the MIDI out terminal of my mixer

2, Connected the USB connector to a powered USB hub

  1. Connected the USB hub to the same port I used to connect the UNO directly to the mac, I did this because the UNO was recognized on this USB port already.

The UNO was recognized and was able to send MIDI messages from my mixer to MixEmergency (program for videos)

Bottom line, the UNO works for what  I needed (using a USB hub).  Moreover, I did not need to install any drivers for this to work,  the latest UNOs are class compliment and no drivers are needed for the MAC.
