[SOLVED] HDJ 2000's Sound Cutting Out

After putting on my headphones the other day and realizing that no matter what I did, no sound was coming out of my HDJ 2000's, I have narrowed it down to the connection of the xlr cable to the headphones themselves. This is my best guess based on testing them. As of last night, I was getting partial sound, but like no bass just highs, but when i firmly pushed the xlr connector into the headphones, it suddenly came back to life. For a few minutes, yesterday, they worked perfect when worn with band across head, but when I dropped the band to rest on my neck, sound was gone. My buddy suggested it could also be the internal connectors of the mini xlr jack and not the cable.

So my HDJ's are not even a year old so what do I do to get these things fixed? For this type of problem, I really wish pioneer would just send me a new cord/cans. I have a backup pair of ultrasones that I replaced with the HDJ 2000's after using those for roughly 4 years.

As far as HDJ 2000's cable, I almost always leave it on the headphones when I pack them into my bag. I am careful not to put any unecessary stress on connection, but I figured if i had plugged/unplugged them at every gig, that would be the cause for them to fail.

Any help would be great. Going to search the archives real quiick as well.

Your best bet is to contact technical support for a repair. If you remove the XLR cable you should see three straight pins - if these are damaged that could be your problem. Alternatively, you could try ordering an XLR cable through tech support and see if that resolves your issue.

Thanks Gavin. I spoke with support and they instructed me to mail them to Long Beach. The only thing that kind of sucks is that you guys don't accept will call/walk ins. I would have much preferred taking my headphones to you guys in person since I live two cities over, but instead I had to mail them. Kind of seems silly, but I was just hoping to get the HDJ's back by the weekend for my gigs.

Based on the discussion I had with some other HDJ users on another forum, it seems like my thought that unplugging/plugging in the mini-xlr after every gig would accelerate failure seems to be backwards. It is not like I put a bunch of stress pressure on the connector, but I think it might have had something to do with it. I will be sure to unplug the cans every time I put them away.

If it's any consolation, Long Beach is the HQ so you are guaranteed of a quality repair.

The mini-XLR is really only implemented to facilitate changing out the lead if it becomes damaged. It's not there to be taken out after every gig - there really isn't any need anyway. The pins are shielded when the cable is left intact also.

Like I said, it would be nice if HQ had a will call/ warranty drop off point, but that's just my preference. I would prefer to hand deliver service items vs mailing when the company is local. Support made it sound like they receive the headphones, verify warranty issue, and ship me a new set. Didn't say anything about repairing my set.

So your saying that the cable should not be removed before placing them into their bag? I am pretty sure the connection came loose and is the culprit and I want to make sure that I don't run into this problem anytime soon.

After using my Ultrasone headphones tonight that I had used for the last 4 yrs before my HDJ's, I realized how bad I miss them. The HDJ's sit comfortably and really are the best fitting headphones I have used to date.

No, leave the cable attached! You run the risk of bending the pins each and every time you push the cable in and out.

So cable stays in? I know what you mean Gavin, but I am very cautious each time I plug them in, but on average that is at least a half dozen times a week. I could see this ending badly after a while.

BTW Pioneer shipped me a brand new set in the box. I was a little irritated that it took almost 2 weeks, but considering they are brand new, I cannot complain! I am so glad to have these babies back. They are such awesome headphones. Mix for 6 hrs straight and they are by far the most comfortable for long sessions like that.

I take my cable out every time I'm done using them, I have to otherwise they wouldn't fit in the case I have for them!

It could have been a small wiring issue that caused the problem but glad to hear you got the issue sorted.

I had the same problem. I bougth one hdj 2000 At. Audiolines and i have problem with the cable with a few time of use. Im in brazil and would like To know how To receive a warranty support.

yeah, but they wont fit in the Pioneer  HDJ-HC01 headphone case unless you disconnect the cable every time...........So, which is the lesser of the 2 evils - pushing the cable in & out every time or not putting them in a case ?

1 year later and my headphones have never had this issue again, unplug cable every time I play out, which is multiple times a week. Idk why that first pair I had gave out so quickly, probably an isolated incident. My HDJ's are on their last legs just from use at this point. IE: sweat on those once amazing pads have left them like sand paper and the plastic/rubber portion of headband is now reinforced with some electrical tape since the plastic on the inside was separating. Cosmetics.... sound is still perfect!

Would love to see a NEXUS edition that reinforced the headband and maybe upped the amount of aluminum or something. After over a decade of DJing, I can say my headphone experience has been extremely negative when I began, thanks to a certain headphone that broke EVERY TIME at the joint where the cup piviots to the band. I am sure most DJ's probably even owned a pair, or half dozen like I did since there was not competition for a while!

Fast forward and now the opposite is true, tons of competition, but you guys got it right with the HDJ 2000! I have to say in a year, they have been through hell with accidents like them falling off booths etc. And they are a little worn, which is to be expected, but sound PERFECT every time I plug them in.

My only decision is white or black for the next pair and maybe hold out a tad longer to see if you guys come out with an update besides color!
