Pioneer DDJ Ergo USB cable issue

I lost my original USB lead which came with the controller, I bought a new printer cable today, plugged it in, and the only response the controller gives is that the left volume bar flashes red. Any ideas anyone?

A USB cable is a USB cable, the same way an extension cord is an extension cord; unless the cable is bad, it should work.  Does the left volume flash regardless of what the software is doing?
