External USB-drives in Rekordbox DJ

I'm having problems using my old USB-drives with rekordbox dj and my new DDJ-RZ. When a drive is connected it only shows in "Export"-mode and not in "Performance"-mode. Another example when this is a huge problem is if I get up in a club and want to play b2b, and i friend wants to play his USB-stick through my DDJ-RZ.

Anybody know a fix?

@Neil > As @Mark noted, with rekordbox in performance mode, each DJ would need to have their own laptop. You CAN load an alternate second database, but it's not simultaneous; you would end up disconnecting the current database and stopping playback when that happens.

Currently Rekordbox can only read one local database.  To play b2b, your friend would need to plug his laptop into the RZ as well.

Just came across this problem yesterday ! I was hoping that with RBDJ you could just use one laptop running RBDJ and a Pioneer controller, then have an external USB multi hub also plunged into the laptop. This way you can DJ with your files on your laptop, but the next DJ would only need to plug a USB stick with RB files in to the hub. In Export mode RB reads and plays files on a USB plugged into the hub, but once you go to RBDJ mode you can't !!!!! It would make so much sense if Pioneer would sort this out. Its a big problem with DJs wanting to use RB decks, then the next DJ has a big controller to plug in ect... Would be great if you could just have one computer and one controller in the booth, and DJs just plug USB sticks into the hub.

Totally agree with the above, one of the market leaders has the facility to "add database to search" which means when I search for a track, it searches my external drive as well as my PC, within the DJ software, Pioneer will not have a market leader until this feature is added, as I have only 350gb of storage in my PC, this is a must.......

This is a massive drawback for RX / RZ etc. users.

Until RBDJ has the capability to access a secondary library / collection / exported music from RB (located on a usb or sd for example) it is pretty much useless for people wanting to play alongside someone else. The RX only has one usb input and I am sure people don't want to lug a laptop around all the time with them.

What would make RB great is if I could wander around with just a usb stick full of music and jump in when required and go b2b with anyone... but until the performance mode is sorted this will only ever be a pipe dream......

@James > Sorry, that's a limitation of the USB drive being designed for EXPORT use only.

Accidentally just turned RB on, and saw yet another update ! Also, played a set at a bar the other night using one of them XDJ RX units ! The DJ who owned it was complaining about the RB software not working properly with the unit, and he had to reboot it back to factory setting, and just use tracks on a USB stick that had RD 3.0 files. There's something not quite right with RB ! Noticed the wave form was on beat but in the headphones it was just out !

Maybe Pioneer should have come out with a software that acutely works before releasing a software !

@Neil > I'm not sure what to make of your comment.  We are constantly making changes, improvements, upgrades and fixing issues in these updates.  Would you prefer we didn't do this?  Many users are using rekordbox dj for their performances and having no issues at all.  But unfortunately, some users are experiencing issues and that's why we are here.  To provide support for them and help them solve their issues.  Sometimes it's a user error or incorrect settings and sometimes it is an internal issue that needs to be resolved with a software update on our end.  rekordbox dj is less than 4 months old, we expected there would be some growing pains and we are committed to making this software better and better for everyone across the board.

Oh my f... god. How could they made such a mistake? Performance mode is not working with USB. Its also not possible to copy your usb collection to the main collection of the rekordbox. You have to set up all your cues new. A lot of time for nothin

@Steven > The engineers are working to include support for USB devices under Performance mode in a future update of rekordbox.

No, your friend doesn't need to buy anything to have the same music in both collections, either by migration or synchronization. There's plenty of information available on the internet for making sure iTunes is the same on two computers, as well as here on the forums for using the same rekordbox database on multiple computers. Seeking assistance rather than cursing and complaining is the advisable route to a solution.

Thx for that quick answer. I have a question: What would you recommend for recording on djm's 900 nexus audio interface, with H5/H6 Zoom or rekordbox DJ? I decided to record first on rekordbox DJ. But I heard the sound quality of usb 3 is better than the connection with RCA to TS which is needed for record on H5 or H6. I think the quality would be way better if it would be possible to record via XLR from the DJM 900 Nexus to the H5/H6, but I believe the XLR connections of the DJM 900 Nexus is not for recording; its just for speakers or microphone.

Honestly, I'd just record directly into rekordbox. As a digital recording, it would be a better quality than from one of the analog outputs from the mixer. The H5/6 are great quality recorders, but if you're already using rekordbox, that will be superior.

The XLR master output could be used to connect to the Zoom, but most people have that going to their speakers, so it's unavailable. The recording output would be the next best connection as it bypasses the master output level on the mixer.

Is there a possiblity to record in Rekordbox just with the DJM 900 Nexus (with the soundcard of DJM 900 Nexus) without the CDJs?

Is there a possibility to use the rekordbox DJ-Mixer with the DJM 900 Nexus Mixer and soundcard? Or is it only possible to use one mixer once?

I am really sorry that I post again but I dont get any further. I set my Audio settings of my imac to input DJM 900 Nexus and output DJM 900 Nexus. Then I put the Audio settings in rekordbox to Built-in-Output (not DJM 900 Nexus!) because I cant use the DJM 900 Nexus Fader when I put the audio settings to DJM 900 Nexus!! (the trim section and effects are working well) The mixer-Modus in rekordbox on intern (Intern Mixer-Modus). Input Record is on master out. When I put the Audio in rekordbox to DJM 900 Nexus I can not use the intern Mixer of rekordbox. I want use the intern Rekordbox-Mixer with the DJM 900 Nexus soundcard to record.

Does rekordbox uses now the soundcard of the DJM 900 Nexus or does it still record through the build-in soundcard of my computer when I have the audio settings from rekordbox to build-in Output? I dont see through.

Any more news on the external drive issue ?

We've been told that they're investigating the possibility of having external (export) drives included in a future update, but we don't have a guarantee or a timeline of this feature, sorry.

Any update on running multiple drives on one PC.  My partner and I play constantly together and this is a real issue as we have our own media sources and don't wish to play from a single source.  I can see his hard drive in the explore dropdown but he can not use any of the playlists that he has created.

As well I purchased the xdi-1000mk2's late last year... the other night I tried transitioning from RB Link to a buddy who had plugged in his usb right into the deck.  When I switched it to USB mode on the deck I lost the audio from what was playing threw RB.  Any tips or tricks to avoid this... you would think it would just know what is playing from what?

Please help.. I'm really trying to transition away from Serato but these types of issues are not making it easy.

Thanks in Advance :)

Sorry, per my last post, it's not yet implemented nor do we have a timeline or guarantee it will be available.

As for switching sources, you didn't detail which deck was linked to rekordbox and which deck had the USB drive connected, so I can't quite provide an answer.

Thanks for the reply... I'm using a USB cable from both decks to the a USB hub  which of course goes to the computer and I have the 2 decks connected via ethernet cable.  So both decks are connected to RB and I've tried inputing the USB stick to both and the outcome is the same...  I hope this clarifies things a bit more for you :)

Cheers

Why do you have the decks connected via USB if you're liking to rekordbox over the ProDJ Link? USB is only needed to control the software if you're in Performance mode. Is that what you were doing?

Yes... I run two USB cables from the computer to each deck, then I have the network cable running between the decks (no hub). Should I be configuring a different way. I use RB dj in Performance mode to perform

Okay, that's a bit more clear -- if you're using rekordbox DJ (as opposed to rekordbox in link mode), you need the USBs for HID control. You're on a PC, and when you switch the XDJ from PC mode to USB mode, the XDJ disconnects the audio device from the computer and because both XDJs make up an aggregate, if one goes, they both go, thus the loss of audio.

What kind of mixer are you using?

So everything would have to be loaded from the laptop? Which even if the person had already prepped all their tracks in RB nothing would populate as far as ques and such because my laptop would be the master database. Hence the original issue in this thread. As they may want to find a better way to allow Dj's to transition from one middle to another including link to USB. But I get it, Pioneer wants a stable platform first and added features after. I can respect that. Just the waiting part is so painful when we are trying to make it work now in real time.

Okay, the DJM-800 doesn't help the situation as you can't use that as your audio interface rather than the XDJs and thus not lose the connection.

Your only solution would be to connect another device to a 3rd channel on your mixer as an "in-between" when you change-over from USB-to-computer to USB-drive-on-XDJ.

Our rekordbox team is aware of the desire to be able to load multiple rekordbox databases or to connect an export device and play from there, but currently, this is not supported. Hopefully in future we'll see this expanded.

I should point out that the higher-end CDJs don't have the problem you're describing as they have separate USB chipsets allowing for a connection to the computer plus a connection to a USB device simultaneously, rather than having to switch and lose the connection to the other.
