[CLOSED] XDJ R1 next firmware update? Product is currently not fit for sale.

Hi, I  like many others here recently received the XDJ R1. I also have CDJ 1000's and a DJM850 so I am a regular pioneer user. I purchased my unit with a 30 day money back guarantee which gives me two more weeks to make up my mind. Please let me know how far along pioneer are with fixing or updating the firmware for the following issues:

  1. Loop not working properly, skipping on tracks which play fine on other pioneer devices.

  2. Track jumping while using jogwheels to scratch.

  3. BPM wandering and losing sync after 20/30 seconds.

  4. Sound quality poor on usb playback of mp3 @ 320kbps and all. Sound okay on midi use.

  5. Some tracks stopping mid play with no explanation.

  6. Hardware volume sliders becoming dead when using effects on app.

  7. FX hardware knobs same. They should reset fx when the app is back to the browser window but don't.

  8. Failure of unit to map BPMS properly or loop on CD even after a number of minutes.

I understand this is a new product but this is a long list of faults, there may be more which I have yet to find. The unit would suit me perfectly for mobile use if it worked as advertised but I literally have two weeks to decide. In the meantime one of your competitors has a similar product in the offing coming soon. I would appreciate your time in answering these issues. I understand that Gavin is answering these posts as an intermediary and thank him for his time but the engineers who released this product without resolving this issue have damaged my faith in pioneer immensely. I am a qualified electronic engineer and these faults became evident to me after an hour's testing so why did nobody at the manufacturing stage sort them? Thanks for your time.

@anthony Flemming

Thank you for this constuctive post and this is is a concern for many of us here.  Many of the issues you describe are what I have as well but you wrote them better. I own other Pioneer products as well and I am baffled by this one and the lack of testing.

@jobushwick Thanks, appreciate it. I am very disappointed to be honest. I have already sold the controller I was using, an XDJ aero which had none of these issues but did suffer from an occasional problem with the wifi stopping. €1000 is quite a bit of money for a piece of hardware which you can't trust to work on. Not only that but as word gets out they will be harder to sell second hand unless these issues are addressed. If these can all be sorted with a firmware update I'm sure everyone will get over the initial glitches but if it's a deeper hardware issue then I wonder what will happen.

Very well said Anthony! I did have too the xdj aero and it was pretty ok not to many issue. But I got rid of it. I hate to say it but I gave up on pioneer. Can't really trust there products and firmware. But I do know that the xdj r1 will get fix with a firmware. Just don't know when will that be.

Thank you Anthony for posting this in a very constructive manner.  I am in the exact same boat as you and have approximately 2 weeks to return it, should I not get answers and fixes to these issues.  I want this product to work because it is a fantastic product.  As you pointed out - it needs many fixes and hopefully that can all be addressed in firmware.  Thanks again for posting this.  Pioneer....the ball is with you.

Cheers,

John

Thank you all. Am currently considering making a video to demonstrate issues.

Appreciate all the kind comments. We all want this product to work because it's a great concept.

Thx Anthony Fleming,

All the problems you mentioned are part of what I have.

I cross my fingers for them to do their patch as soon as possible.

Good video Anthony..

I have the opposite issue with effects.  Mine sometimes stick and won't turn off even though they are not engaged.

Great video Anthony! To be honest with all you guys having problems with the xdj r1. It's going to be fix with a firmware. Me personal even doe I lost my faith in pioneer. I would keep the xdj r1. I know some got a time line to return it. Now am not sure how long it will take to fix. That's a question mark! If not just return the xdj r1 until they come out with a firmware that fix it. And test it out on your local dealer to see if its worth buying again.

Thanks Steven, I'm gonna wait two weeks and see what happens. I just don't know what to do. If it worked as advertised I'd love it.

I know how you feel Anthony! But I know for a fact that it will be fix one day. The worst part is that if denon come out with one just like it. Then that might be a problem.

Thinking about it myself but the aero has some issues too. No booth output, no hot cue points. Search and import function on rekordbox for ipad is clunky. No balanced outputs. In fact it seems pioneer listened to what people wanted extra but unfortunately they rushed the product to market to beat the release of the s4 mark 2 which is due any day now. DJ's were tripping over each other to buy the R1. It has such potential if it worked properly. I expect there'll be an R2 along as well within a few months similar but with bigger platters and an extra two channels.

With the amount of issues this unit seems to have they may have to rewrite the whole code which will take some time, $1000 is not really my idea of a paper weight.

I hope they rewrite it! I watch the product videos the launched and some early demos- how is this unit working so well in these clips?

It doesn't have trouble with the loops in every song, just a lot. The tracks used for demos are often repetitive and pretty simplistic so maybe that would have a bearing on it. Also the firmware at the moment is version 4 so maybe something went wrong with some update?

@jobushwick > Those demo videos should be taken with a grain of salt, it's in a controlled environment with editing involved not real world application, I'm just hoping the hardware it up to par in handling the new firmware since this is supposedly an "affordable" option = cheap/underpowered parts.

Tried playing with it tonight and a new quirk - I load one song but every time I cue it the deck jumps to the previous track that was loaded. Then I load a different track and it says its playing but it's not the song I chose and then it froze. If the firmware is not up to par because of cheap hardware we are really in trouble.

As an update for anyone watching this topic, just checked my youtube stats and highest time watched so far by country on that video is Japan with 148 minutes of viewing. That's good news for us all as it means the techs in pioneer must be watching it and trying to figure out what's up. Thank you pioneer!

@Anthony > I've had the following feedback from the engineer in charge:

  1. Loop not working properly, skipping on tracks which play fine on other pioneer devices.

The engineer would like to ask him the following questions.

    1) How does he analyze the tracks in Rekordbox? Does he use Normal or Dynamic mode?

    2) Does he play loop with Quantize on?

Does he make sure the beats after analyzed is aligned?

  2. Track jumping while using jogwheels to scratch.

    This is not a bug.

When he scratches at the track head, the previous track is scratched as well, and if he releases his hand there, the original track is played, where Auto Cue is enabled.

The engineer saw in the video that every time the track jumps or stops, the time display became blank.

This spec is the same for all the Pioneer players except XDJ-Aero, which does not go to the next track automatically.

  3. BPM wandering and losing sync after 20/30 seconds.

The engineer wants to know more details about the BPM issue in writing and needs the problematic file.

  4. FX hardware knobs same. They should reset fx when the app is back to the browser window but don't.

This is not a bug, either. This is how Takeover function works.

When Takeover is enabled, only when the knob on R1 is turned to the same position on X-Y pad remotebox, the knob becomes enabled.

When Takeover is disabled, only when the knob on R1 is turned, the knob becomes enabled.

Either Takeover enabled or disabled and in any view is displayed on remotebox, remotebox remembers the last position unless the knob is turned.

  5. Hardware volume sliders becoming dead when using effects on app.

In the same way, this might be caused by Takeover function of the volume slider on remotebox instead of affected by FX he uses.

He might enabled Takeover and moved the slider on remotebox, the slider on R1 is not enabled until the slider is moved to the same position last time moved on remotebox.

Some other issues are now investigating, but the detailed information is missing in most cases.

Hey Gavin,

  1. Normal mode. Tracks loop fine in rekordbox. Loop skips with quantize on or off. Yes I check beat after analysing.

  2. This is a bug. Tracks are jumping when scratched. Also wrong, not the same for all pioneer players. When track is loaded using rekordbox on pc/ipad you can scratch the track without loads in the previous one. Asdie from going to previous track the buffer is losing it's position on the track when going back to live play after the scratch. Tell the engineer as well it is probably this same fault with the buffer which is causing the loop fault.

  1. Problematic file? Tell the engineer to load 100 mp3's of chart music at 320kbps anaylsed on rekordbox and see how well they maintain sync. The issue becomes immediately obvious.

If it's obvious to me that it's a buffer fault it should be too to the pioneer techs. Thanks for your reply Gavin but I feel there are many DJ's worldwide having all the same problems. Rather than asking for more details and asking more questions perhaps the techs should be solving them and answering our questions. I am particularly upset with the answer to the scratch issue. The track is jumping position, this should not happen, IT IS A BUG.

Thanks Gavin.

Okay, I've just done another clip buffer specific for you to hand on, at this stage I'm convinced it is the buffering chip/software causing the problems. Also as regards the takeover function, changed the settings and fx knobs and buttons are still glitchy. FX on when they shouldn't be and off when they shouldn't be. Going to bed now, clip will be live at  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gm9RCWVU-Yc&feature=youtu.be in around 30 minutes from now. Thanks for your time Gavin, sorry you are getting all the flack but unfortunately you seem to be the go-to man on these forums.

Thank you Anthony! Quantize is on and the loops drift. When I come out of a loop the beat skips or stutters on the end to throw me off beat. Same with if i go into a beat loop.

@Gavin > That software takeover issue needs to be addressed, imagine you're in the middle of a set and you want to engage the color effects on the hardware but you have to remember each time to turn the knob first before pushing the button, that to me is an unnecessary step, when takeover is off the hardware controls should not be affected by the software but it is so why even have that setting if it doesn't really do anything?  Also I had pointed out on another post this issue I found  http://forums.pioneerdj.com/entries/24771236-xdj-r1-beat-control-section-issue, it really ruins the beat effects when you have a 3/4, 1/3 and 3/16 beat within the parameters, it makes them sound horrible.
