DJM S9 sound is distorted

I love the DJM S9 but the sound quality distorts very easily. I DJ for the Brooklyn Nets at the Barclays Center and when I start cranking the volume, it distorts when the master level is in the first or second yellow, sometimes even when its still in the green. The individual meters on the channels are almost always in green. The trim levels are always between 3-5. Any ideas on why this happens? Does changing the attenuation help at all? It's normally at the 0db level.

It's possible that the mixer is bad - there shouldn't be a buzzing and it could be that there was a crossed connection causing the buzzing and subsequently distortion in the audio output. If you're within the return window with your retailer, you may try returning it for an exchange, otherwise you'll need to contact Pioneer technical support for further assistance. Unfortunately the turnaround is certainly more than a couple of days, but they would be able to better outline the expected time if that's the case.

Have you updated the firmware?

Are you running OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) by chance?

Yo Jung,

2 suggestions:

-Lower the master Attenuation in the S9 Utility closer to the minimum (-19db I believe)

-In the 1.8 Serato DJ upgrade, a master Gain knob was added in the GUI above the right deck, next to the MIDI and Setup tabs. Try lowering this some.

Hope this helps.

Update: lowered master attenuation to -6, doesn't distort as much but still does when I crank it up.  I also have been getting a buzz sound so we switched to the 1/4" outs and it sounds amazing without the buzz.  The problem is that I use the 1/4" for the monitor but more importantly, I rely a lot on my output meter level.  That can no longer be used since that's attached to my monitor and it's showing me a different level than the master.  To the pioneer people, do I have a bad mixer?  I want to send this in but understand that I use this a lot for the Nets games and can't really be without it for more than a couple of days.

Where did you purchase the unit?  Try to take it back, and get a replacement.

Return it and get a new one. I have tested all my outputs and I dont run into any of the issues you are having. Sorry man....

What is your master volume in serato at? Mine is at the 12 o clock position.

Also if your buffer set to 1ms? Try adjusting it higher especially if your CPU meter is peaking while playing.

Update: So I took the Pioneer rep's advice and exchanged for another one and the new one sounds perfect!  I guess I had a bad one, it happens and wouldn't take it out on Pioneer.  Thanks for the support and everyone's advice!

I do understand these have been an issue with many Pioneer mixers, including but not limited to SRT1000 controllers as well. I am a master technician who has changed out at least 17 main boards based on a bad DSP on the main board. Problem I have is definitely with Pioneer as too many of these mixers' DSP is failing with no clue as to why. All I can think of is over current from powered speakers being connected to any of the outputs while speakers are powered on which faults the DSP and that main board part number DWX3673 cost is $432. The service manual even suggests that no technician should work on the main assembly board although I have been changing out faulty components to save clients some money. Pioneer, what's your prognosis from my stand point as a technician for all my DJ's in Detroit?
