CD vs Vinyl

Can CDs have a fluctuating tempo?

I've been building up a back catalog of old trance CDs from late 90's to early 2000's bought from Discogs as it's cheaper than buying turntables and vinyl again.
I've always regretted selling my turntables and vinyl so I thought I'd get the music back in CD format to play in my CDJs.
I have them as MP3 as well but CD should be better sound quality.

However, I can't help noticing the sound quality seemed to be better on vinyl.
Plus, I never recall having any problems beat-matching these tracks with vinyl, whereas with my CDs the tempo seems to drift - can this happen with CDs?

Mixing the same tracks on vinyl with Technics turntables years ago was flawless.

I had that same thought years ago when I switched. I think it's a lot of familiarity with the vinyl as opposed to cd. You're hands on with vinyl and the cd is just in the slot, controlled by a wheel. It always felt different, and I'm sure that cd spins at a different rate than vinyl.
After a few months it started to feel "right" and just seemed to get easier.
I even had a similar experience here recently switching to digital and software...it really just takes some getting used to.

Tech 1200s have a very precise tempo, but not everyone uses that particular turntable to rip vinyl to mp3. Maybe this is the source of the fluctuation is what you're hearing now.

I would add that with quantization and sync this should really not be an issue...It makes it way easier to mix, at least for me!
