Unfortunately, this is simply not possible within the current structure of the software.
I have a rekordbox library on my laptop to use with DDJ-RZ. The odd time I use CDJs I have the library exported to thumbdrive.
Lets say I am going to do a gig with someone who has Rekordbox running on their laptop. Why can't I plug this USB into their computer and use it that way. Would make sense since RB Is already installed and running.
Similar to how SSL users back in the day could have their library on a external drive, plug in and start mixing in within minutes.
Also would be great for a backup laptop, for example main laptop dies during a performance. Connect to a second laptop, insert USB library and be up and running.

+1 on this comment, rasied this the other day, should be possible to simply plug in a USB/External drive and reference that to play from without importing all the tracks into RBDJ.
Clear that sync and all of that nonsense wont work if tracks aren't analysed, but most djs would be fine with that (given no one I know actually uses sync)?

well... if you got the entire Library on a USB drive you should be able to switch the rekordbox running on that Laptop to read it - like you do when sharing the same library between multiple machines.
I am not talking about an rekordbox exported USB stick.
i.e. I got a 256GB USB stick which can hold my entire 'Master' Library. With this USB I should be able to access my Library on any recordbox machine - true?
It would have to have the Music files too and the USB stick would need to have the same drive letter as on the original machine.
I can't stig it into the CDJ - that is clear.

You can play the tracks from the external HD/USB... BUT RBDJ makes you import any track you play into the main RBDJ Library.
... not ideal if playing back2back with a DJ - if RBDJ can see/read/play the tracks, surely there is an option to do this without forcing the 'import into collection'?

@Mark
What do you mean the structure of the firmware? Isn't firmware only on hardware? I'm talking about taking a USB drive with my "exported" library (for use on CDJs) but instead of plugging it into a CDJ, I would plug that USB drive into another comptuer running RB and playing off that.
Basically making the Rekordbox software on a laptop behave like a CDJ.
Does this make sense?
Sorry, Harry. I meant software not firmware.
I have the same issue, it's just not practical to import back into rekordbox DB as all previous analysing, cue points, loops and markers are lost on transfer back as rekordbox just see's it as a new 'virgin' track(s). I think this feature needs to be intergrated in future update, as it would be great to have a fully integrated system where all rekordbox exported usb drives can be used between cdjs, xdjs, and Rekordbox DJ makes since in DJ booths.
Is there some sort of copyright Infringement issue or Pulselocker agreement that makes this feature not possible ?? just a thought
Yes I would like to keep my library between a pc and a Mac. And it stay updated whether I do load a new track on either computer and add new cues and loops.
Very frustrating
@Jacob > Sorry, but Windows uses a drive letter to mount a drive and macOS uses a volume name, so theoretically you could do it, but the library would need to relocate the tracks every time you switch.
You're not doing yourself any favours by trying to bounce between OS's.
i have the same problem.. I an external hard drive alongside my internal between two laptops... I also back up my external on 3 other drives just in case... but when I plug in another external drive rekordbox is unable to locate the tracks
@DJ_iET > That's because the drive is being loaded to different letters (if on PC) or to a different volume path (if on Mac). The fixes are different for each OS, so start by telling me which you're using and I can give you the specific instructions.
I am using windows 10 on both laptops.. so I keep half of my crates/playlist internally on my laptops and the other half on my external hard drive... So basically the playlists that i have been creating on rekordbox (the past 7 days) from my external hard drive I want to use them on either laptop
Okay, in Windows you'll need to assign a fixed drive letter for that external drive so it always mounts to the same letter. Follow the instructions here - I'd recommend using a letter towards the end of the alphabet, I typically use X for "External." Do this for both computers.
You'll need to relocate any missing tracks (this will be a one time thing and you can batch-relocate using this process), then you're good to go.
I'll also assume you're using the same account (username) on each computer, otherwise any files stored locally on the internal drive will have a different path on each computer, thus be missing if you went to load them.
