Exact setup for external MIDI controller?

Can someone please explain exactly what you do to make an external MIDI controller play samples on the Toraiz?

I've read the addendum PDF to the letter and performed the instructions exactly, but I can't get the "MIDI IN" icon to light up on the Toraiz no matter what I do. I have tried both DIN and USB from a computer (after setting the appropriate utility settings, of course) with 3 different controllers.

Could I be missing a very obvious setting I need to change?

EDIT: After messing with it a little more, I discovered that if I switch my Sync over to MIDI from Internal, then it works. I'm a newbie to MIDI but is this how it's supposed to work? I thought sync was a totally different setting that you might want to configure in different ways, theoretically.

Have you followed the instructions in the manual addendum?

To allow triggering of tracks: UTILITY > PROJECT SETTING (MIDI IN) > NOTE / CC > ENABLE

To configure tempo sync via MIDI input (DIN5): UTILITY > MACHINE SETTING > SYNC SOURCE SELECT > MIDI

MIDI I/F SELECT > DIN MIDI

Thanks for getting back to me so soon.

Yes, I've followed them. The problem is that I can only trigger tracks if the sync source is set to MIDI. I can't send notes when the sync source is set to INTERNAL.

I'm not sure why there is this problem for me. I want to be able to trigger tracks while keeping sync source at INTERNAL, but it only works on MIDI.

it makes no sense because those are two different settings and I don't want to tempo sync at the moment. But the software is not giving me a choice, it forces me to enable both at the same time if I want to trigger tracks from an external keyboard.

Have I discovered a bug in the software, maybe?

I can definitely confirm that midi in on my sp16 only works when sync is set to midi as well.
No reason for this! Also just want to mention again that external keyboard does not work
when a track is set to midi, only works when set to sample.

Thanks for chiming in! I've been posting on some of the biggest music forums around, looking for people who shared my problem, and could find no one. I think maybe it's simply because people would tend to use an instrument like the Toraiz in an environment with many synced MIDI instruments instead of standalone. Still, it made me doubt my sense of reality a little or wonder if my machine was defective. So you helped a lot just by saying something, thanks. :)
