Cant partition usb drive mac

just plugged my flash drive in on my mac book air 11.6, went to follow pulse's guide on formatting the drive, but partition is greyed out on mine.

I erased the drive and formatted it with osx journalled. all fine but still partition is greyed out.

what can i do here to get the partition?
