Sp-16 Opening the OS/Alternative third party operating system option

Hi there,

since it's 2021 and the world is still locked down can you ask the Toraiz Team whether there is the possibility of making the operating system of the Sp-16 accessible to the users for experimentation and to work on developing open source OS alternatives? Even a closed beta group of trusted individuals e.g. certified owners with real interest of improving the OS would be a start. Of course without the ability of monetizing and under Creative Commons licenses if sth would be developed.

Pioneer could still provide the latest official OS + support and is legally not responsible for 3rd party solutions (=install at your own risk), but giving the option would open up a new world of possibilities eventually unused with the machine.

This was already asked for in this thread with many great ideas and feature implementations: Open-Source OS, so people can help with features (https://forums.pioneerdj.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/900001262603-Open-Source-OS-so-people-can-help-with-features?input_string=Sp-16%20Opening%20the%20OS%2FAlternative%20third%20party%20operating%20system%20option)

Let us, the user community know if Pioneer would be interested to use the idle resources waiting to be unleashed.

Kind regards,

Roy

After discussing it with some of the product planning team, I can put a(n) (unofficial) nail in this idea's coffin...

Unless the system were made completely open from scratch, there is almost no way that Pioneer DJ would allow the current system to become open-source because of the amount of proprietary code which is shared by functions such as the effects and time stretching.

My recommendation would be to seek out those who have already made inroads to hacking the system to make their own changes already.

Sorry!

This is a great idea! The SP-16 hardware has huge potential. Make the shift from a slowly dying product to a vibrant platform, please.

Yes indeed! There are superfans of the SP-16 who are ready to speed out of the gate for the chance of expanding upon the unit's current state.... So many things left unexplored! Please let the Toraiz community help ITself out, the SP-16 is a future classic and might become the go-to sampler for so many with further update implementation! Imagine everyone with Pioneer/Toraiz on their lips, instead of Akai/Elektron/NI!! This is absolutely possible with community user help! Help us help you! 🙏🙏🙏

I'll pass this along, but Pioneer DJ is unlikely to offer up the keys to the TORAIZ kingdom. While I agree that a community-based initiative could certainly help expand this product's potential, it also opens up a can of worms that I'm sure they're not prepared to support.

This already got 22 upvotes on FB: https://www.facebook.com/groups/toraiz/permalink/1159926281088297/

If not a full, even a partial opening of the OS, like Korg did with their Logue series would help.

The community is motivated to improve the machine in every possible way - at their own risk of course.

Pioneer DJ can keep the official OS in place and stay out of any involvement or responsibility for the open source OS.

They could co-exist. This is just an option for dedicated owners/users.

The launch was 5 years ago and there is still some serious dedication in place to improve an already great user interface, as you can see.

This is an opportunity to add, not retract value.

Thanks for listening.

Kind regards,

Roy
